Have you guys seen this. So sad but so true....

Diamond Dave - Magna Carta 2003

4 / 10

There are two fields of intellectual thought regarding the work and persona of Jewish entertainer David Lee Roth. There are the nay-sayers who have always found him to be a boorish, scenery-chewing buffoon, and the pro-Dave camp, who followed with glee his every yelp, leap and hilarious rock video up through Skyscraper, before having to sit back and watch their one-time idol grow wrinklier, more grotesque and apparently completely unaware of the public's perception of him. Why does he still bleach the little that's left of his hair? Why does he still make rubbery Don Knotts-style faces while surrounding himself with buxom, half-dressed models who probably find him sickening? Does he still think he's young, wild and sexy? Or is it all an act - an aging Vegas showman's parody of the larger-than-life rock star he once was? If it's the latter, I'm all for it as a hilarious and un-self-conscious "Frig you!" to our age- and beauty-centric popular culture. Unfortunately, I'm more inclined to think it's the former, which means Dave is well on his way to being the most highly visible "outsider artist" of our time -- bathing in the warmth of his audience's applause, blissfully unaware that thyey stopped laughing WITH him a long time ago.

I know I may sound patronizing, but I don't mean to. Dave still has more millions more fans than I'll ever have, even if they're only fans of a younger version of the man. And I myself am a David Lee Roth fan. I read - and loved - his Crazy From The Heat book and was excited when I heard that he was releasing an album of cover tunes. So it's not with a light, "told you so" heart that I declare Diamond Dave the worst collection of music he has ever released. Whether desecrating classics or defecating obscurities (I have to admit I don't know Savoy Brown, but I do know I wouldn't have begun my new album with THREE songs in a row by them), Dave lets his overblown and/or boring personas ruin the intrinsic value of nearly every song on here. How do you ruin a song as great as "Tomorrow Never Knows"? Simple - you have your band learn it wrong and then sing it like a rich jock making fun of hippies. How do you suck the fun out of The Hombres' hilarious nugget "Let It All Hang Out"? Dave knows! You shove the killer guitar riff way in the background to make room for a lifeless, pointlessly "serious" intonation of the lyrics. But surely it's not possible to ruin Hendrix's "If 6 Was 9"?! Well no, it's plenty possible if you convert it into a trance/eastern electronic thing with the lyrics AGAIN intonated in an inscrutably unmusical (and unemotional) tone. I know he's just trying to give that Dave flave to pre-existing songs, but to what end? What is his goal with this release? To prove to the world that he's no longer capable of adequately interpreting other songwriters' material? Surely he didn't think that Diamond Dave would have the career-defining impact of his LAST covers project, from whence sprang his eternal hits "California Girls" and "Just A Gigolo." Those songs sprung forth from the well of a young, arrogant man with tons of self-confidence and charisma. The David Lee Roth of 2003 is not that man. Far from aging gracefully, he has clung pathetically to an image he out-aged 15 years ago. He's incapable of (or uninterested in?) finding a new voice as an all-grown-up entertainer, so we find him year after year going through the same clownish motions but with a fiendish skeletal face where his (ironically) Nordic beauty used to be.

Truth be told, I could give a crap if he bounces around with models or hires a bunch of midgets to escort him everywhere, just as long as he's putting out decent material. This year, he isn't.

DD may not be one of the great DLR albums, but there are a couple of gems on there, and the eternal Dave-osity shines through.

I agree with the reviewer that Dave's interpretations of many of the songs left something to be desired - but he digs a WAYYYYYY too deep to tie his perceived misery of what it is to be David Lee Roth together.

For instance - where he disects "Tomorrow Never Knows" as a jock making fun of hippies, there's no basis to say that. Zero, nada... nothing to merit that distinction or assume that's what Dave "translated" the song as.

Also, to claim that Dave as merely attempting to reclaim his youth by surrounding himself with models and midgets in the No Holds BBQ is also over simplifying.

On the contrary, where he criticises Dave's voice drowning out the guitars on "Let It All Hang Out" - that's the reviwer's opinion to be respected.

Generally speaking, surrounding ones' self with models is admirable behavior regardless of age. Kermudgins that comment on this negatively haven't had pussy since pussy had them.

No, no. Not at all. I happen to love DLR both solo and in VH. I just happen to agree with the writer of the review that Dave needs to stop acting like it's still '84. I love the guy but he is slowly becoming a joke. Similar to Gene Simmons who is slowly but surely destroying his remaining fanbase by refusing to realize he is no longer king of the world.

I'm saying Dave needs to act his age. And I say this in no negative way since he is still 50 years young and can easily have many good years left in him.

Bah.

Most print critics never cared for Roth anyway. CVH got plenty of scathing reviews from 1978-1984, and the decent reviews they did manage to get tended to say Ed was a great guitarist who was being held back by Roth. The same reviewers creamed their shorts when 5150 was released, blathering about how much better the band sounded with Sammy in it, wah wah wah.

Diamond Dave isn't my fave DLR solo release either, but Roth is still the bomb, regardless of what age and era he finds himself in.

Broth,

Dude. Are expecting anything less that a public lynching on this? I don't agree with the review but that's not the point. The point is, what you posted wasn't a review as much as it was the assisination of a Rock legend (and the one everyone on this site seems to like a fair bit). You're just baiting everyone to rip on you, so don't complain when the obvious happens.

I've read negative reviews before, and they are just that, simply reviews. They are opinion pieces. But what you posted was someone who went out of their way to not criticize the recording but to criticize the man.

To quote Carlito, "that ain't cool".

Dude... reality check! How many records do you buy that you hate? How many do you buy that you like?

The more people like it the more it sells is exactly how it is. Why do more people buy one product than the other? Because they like it better. And if what you were saying is indeed the case , that everyone that hears DD, likes it, it should sell. Shouldn't it?

Get some sleep and think it over. It might take a while but you'll get it.

Here is another review of Diamond Dave-

"Let's play fantasy stag night. The proposed location is Las Vegas, so who better than David Lee Roth to organise the tequila, tunes and strippers? You wouldn't want his Van Halen successor Sammy Hagar in charge, dully banging on about his 'Trans Am'. Nor would you want Hagar's successor, ex-Extreme warbler Gary Cherone, calling the shots; he'd probably end up serenading waitresses with that limp-as-kettuce Extreme ballad 'More Than Words'.

The point, for anyone wondering where little exercise is taking things, is that Dave Lee Roth is still the man to put a tiger in your tank, a fun-lovin', skirt-chasin' diamond without whom Van Halen were largely pizazz-less. Some quality time with Dave, you would be inclined to think, and Radio Head's Thom Yorke would be transformed into a happy-go-lucky fella crooning about ladeez rather than paranoid androids.

It's no great shock, then, that Roth's seventh solo album (that's counting 'Crazy From The Heat') is another party hearty record. What is suprising, however, is that it contains just three new Dave comositions. One of these, 'Act One', is only a minute and a half long and finds Roth clowing with an African drum before dissolving into a stoned-sounding laughter. Another, Medicene Man, is shorter still, and had Dave on a scuzzy blues harmonica and vocal. It's really only 'Thug Pop', a sure-fire rocker rocker with creamy soloing from Dave's current guitarist for hire Brian Young that constitutes a proper bit of DLR writing.

So what had Diamond Dave been doing since 1998's 'DLR Band' album, sunning his abs and pecs? There was, of course that stop-start stuff about him possibly rejoining Van Halen, but even with he should have had time to knock off some new songs.

You will have summerised, then, that the remaining 11 tracks on 'Diamond Dave' are cover versions. Indeed, on John Brim's 'Ice Cream Man-here Edgar Winter plays saxaphone, and Nile Rodgers plays guitar-Roth has given the big band treatment to a song he first recorded for 1978's 'Van Halen 1'. There's also a decent version of Jimi Hendrix's 'If 6 was 9', on which Dave sometimes drops to rich spoken-word, a la his 'Skyscraper', while 'You Got The Blues Not Me' (such a Roth sentiment) is a bold, taut and sparky opener. The albums strongest track, though, is the one scedueled to be the first single. Dave's cover of 'Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma' (understandably, renamed 'Shoo Bop'), a pop-funk tune written by Steve Miller, should charm anyone who has ever shaken their booty to Zeppelin's 'The Crunge'. Less wisely, Roth's perfunctory take on the Fab Four's 'Tomorrow Never Knows' has been retitled 'The Beatles Tune'. Can't see Yoko Ono being happy about that decision, Dave. Especially as its a John Lennon song.

All told, Roth's chutzpah and infectious joie de vivre make 'Diamond Dave' an entertaing listen, but, ultimately this is the sound of a great, great frontman trading on past glories. He still sounds like he is hot for teacher all right, but his report card reads something like: "David is a confident, gifted boy and an excellent mixer. 'Diamond Dave', however, is not his best work. Could try harder'.

3/5"

you my friend are a fucking moron!!! Dave is Dave and thats what we like and love. To say that he has'nt changed or what ever you were ranting about is so fucking insane. You buy a classic car because its that, A CLASSIC, not because it gets the best gas mileage. To say you are a Dave fan is an insult to all true VH/Dave fans

Wow! You really are clever! you found a cliche' over-simplistic anti-French pseudo-magazine on your hard drive. You must be really proud to be an AMERICAN. Say smegma picker, since your so cocky form picking the puss out your hemorrhoid, what kind of military service have you done that makes you so tough? Without a doubt, this site is quite the intriguing literary dogpile, and I appreciate your kind words. I've always been of the opinion that the "Diamond Dave" release was just something Dave wanted to do, and from it's very inception, nothing more than just something he wanted to do. Did you know that he referred to the majority of it as the "stuff that stuck in my ears as a kid"? (referring to the covers) It's painfully obvious that this was far from an ambitious effort focused on setting the comeback trail on fiya. Bonafide, dyed-in-the-fucking wool LEGENDS often afford themselves this type of luxury.

Rest assured, Dave doesn't give one flying fuck about asinine disections of ANYTHING he has done, and neither do the majority of folks on this board.

Uh-look it up again shithead, he said "ironical" not typical, which is the bone-headed point you're trying to make I think. I really think you mean something different. And example of irony is you saying that you "love" DLR (i.e. saying one thing, but meaning the complete opposite) You really aren't particulary smart or educated are you?

Sarcasm is irony's less sophisitcated synonym. It is not exactly the same fool, far more blunt.

By the way moron...

Sarcasm:
The term is often misused as a synonym for irony. Irony refers however to the literal meaning and the intended meaning of the words uttered being different, while sarcasm refers to the mocking intent of the utterance. It is possible to be ironic without being sarcastic, and to be sarcastic without being ironic.
