Well...I've grown to like Hopkins over the years...he is a great champion...
He's fighting his last middleweight belt...win or lose in July against Jermain Taylor. He's already locked into a light heavy fight against the winner of Tarver/Glen Johnson...on June 18...
that would be fight #2...
then after that...win or lose...he wants to fight Jones...to avenge the last person to beat him...and bring in a ton of fucking money...
I hope Hopkins wins out...and I hope Jones wakes the fuck up...
Hopkins wants to fight Roy Jones in final bout
UPPER DARBY, Pa. (AP) - Middleweight champ Bernard Hopkins said Friday he wants to fight three more times, including once against the last man to beat him, before he retires in January.
The 40-year-old Hopkins (46-2-1, 32 KOs) defends his title against undefeated Jermain Taylor in Las Vegas on July 16 - a fight Hopkins said will be his last as a middleweight, win or lose.
He plans to move up to light heavyweight and face the winner of the Antonio Tarver-Glen Johnson fight scheduled for June 18.
Hopkins would like to end his career with a fight against Roy Jones Jr., who beat Hopkins by unanimous decision in May 1993 when they fought for the vacant IBF middleweight title.
"A Roy Jones Jr.-Bernard Hopkins fight for the grand finale," Hopkins said. "It's the 12-year anniversary since 1993 that we've been in the ring together."
Hopkins had wanted to fight Felix Trinidad, but Trinidad was soundly defeated last month by Winky Wright, leaving Hopkins with little motivation to fight him.
"Let Roy rest up," Hopkins said. "We'll do it at 175 pounds. Roy doesn't have to kill himself to come down."
Hopkins made the announcement at his final workout before heading to Miami to complete his training for his bout against Taylor (23-0, 17 KOs).
Hopkins has successfully defended his title 20 times in the last decade, including a September 2004 knockout of an overmatched Oscar De La Hoya in the ninth round.
"It's the only fight out there that makes sense," Hopkins said of a rematch with Jones. "I think it makes more sense than me and Winky Wright."
Hopkins said he wanted to challenge himself by moving up to light heavyweight for his last two bouts - fights in which he figures he would be the underdog.
"I'm venturing back into dangerous waters where I'm not really comfortable," Hopkins said.
Hopkins on Friday also announced the creation of an East Coast division of De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, with Hopkins as its president.
Golden Boy East has a multi-event agreement with the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City and will host its first event on Aug. 4, featuring Hopkins' nephew, Demetrius Hopkins in the main event. The rest of the card will be announced later.
