    Roth at Kahunaville: The Review

    Artist: David Lee Roth
    Venue: Kahunaville, Wilmington, Delaware
    Date: June 23, 2005

Dave is holding something back from us.

Maybe he thinks we don't deserve it. Maybe he is right.

So nevermind the fact that I almost got arrested for videotaping the show...I'm not bitter at Dave for that. Dave just didn't seem to bring his A game to Kahunaville. Reports are clear that he was on fire for the Casino Rama show. I wasn't at that show...too bad for me.

Don't take this as me trashing Dave, because i'm not. I just think that Dave is a bit unmotivated by his present backup musicians. I felt the same way after I saw him on the Sam and Dave Tour. It seemed like he really didn't want to be there, and that he was going through the motions. I really believe that Dave does not want anyone in his band to out-shine him...so now he gets people who are adequate professional musicians to play his songs.

Here is the line that I almost am afraid to write, because alot of Roth fans can't be objective:

    Brian Young is overrated.

There, I said it. He looks the part, does cool rock poses at the correct time...plays the notes and everything (a little sloppy sometimes)...

Dave is a competitor, he always has been. He needs someone who is going to compete with him for the spotlight, or else he does only what is necessary. When he surrounds himself with adequate professional musicians, and not with a band that will compete with him for the spotlight, well...it's like the Harlem Globetrotters playing the Washington Generals...it isnt REAL.

Do I think that Dave still has 'IT'? I believe 100% that he does. And I think that we all know the only way we will see it again...and singing 'Jump' with the Boston Pops isnt the way...

Now, if you saw Dave recently and thought that he was just as awesome as ever, well then i'm happy for you. If you were at Kahunaville and loved everything Dave did that night and think that I am nuts for saying he didn't bring his 'A' game...well that's ok by me. I gotta call 'em like I see 'em.

Hell, maybe he was saving his energy for Atlantic City the next night...
Maybe this is what a heroine addict feels like after getting a long awaited fix, shooting up in the corner of some abandoned building and just not giving a fuck about what the rest of the world thinks...TATTOO"

You hit the nail on the head bro.

The show was good, and a lot of fun, but it was about 5 songs

    shorter than Rama.

I was enjoying it but to be honest Dave just seemed to want to

    get it done and split.

I have seen him 8 or 9 times now, and Thursday night seemed

like Dave thought we should be greatful just for him showing up.

Meeting and partying with everyone made up for it though.

I think Dave may have tightened the reins on the

        band too.

Toshi was out smoking stage right before the show

but didn't come over to greet anyone, and when Ray came out

for a few minutes I called out "hey Ray we're here".

He looked over and smiled but didn't come over.

Oh yeah, Dave did I think one kick, and he didn't jump

        off of the riser.

In Rama he was airborn for half the show.

Maybe he doesn't want to risk injury because of bigger things to

        come? Hmmmmm.

Props to you Daves PA Rental for your honesty and objectivity.

Not everyone is going to be perfect every night, and it appears you witnessed one of those nights for the Diamond one.

One can only hope that he is, in fact, saving his enthusiasm for something bigger...hmmmmmmmm??????????

Oh...and I'm STILL fucking pissed I missed it and didn't get to party with you guys.

            Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..............

              Honesty is the best policy.

We appreciate the honesty and like fryingdutchman said...maybe he's saving it up for something big!

Thursday night was my first DLR Concert ever. I have the 2002 Jersey show bootleg on dvd and I think that the Kahunaville show was better overall. Dave's voice sounded like he was struggling to hit the notes at the Jersey show. His voice sounded on par at the Kahunaville show. Again this is just my observation and could be off. Dave seemed to jump around more(even did the jump off of the riser) and did more kicks at the Jersey show. I do not feel like I was ripped off in any way, I got to see one of my favorite rock icons live for $35. Roth Army was great to hang with and I hope we can all get together again for a show.

Yeah, he held back, no doubt, it wasn't him giving 2000%, but something bigger??? maybe, maybe not...

I still had a great time, and maybe he did less kicks, and didn't feel like he had to prove anything, yeah he wasn't hungry, just entertaining, but he is also 50......., but vocally Dave sounded better than all of the shows I have seen in the last 4 years.

You can't be On Fire every night, and as you get older, you can do it even less...but it was a rock solid entertaining show....

yes, just 3 months ago, when he was in Boston he said that he wasn't even able to his EMT gig because of recent surgery

Wade through it, and enjoy what you can. I saw the same outfit a couple weeks back, and while certainly no classic line-up vibe was there, it sure beats the hell out of some cash grab for the masses that are asses.

Is Dave going through some semblance of "the motions?"

                            Probably in a miniscule way.

                            I agree....and will say this.

The guy doesn't give A FLYING FUCK what anyone thinks, including me. It's been more than a few years since he's shown up with anything more than some marshall stacks and musicians. No inflatables, no surfboards, nothing but the essentials. Shit, he probably doesn't even hand-mop the stage anymore.

The inside joke is alive and well.

It's been going on for YEARS.

Remember that Dave opened his book talking about taking motrin for pain in is feet and that his feet are always hurting. It seem to me that if Dave has had knee surgery recently that the drum riser jumps are gonna become rare. I mean, maybe, he's just in pain. And the pain is dampening his enthusiasm a bit. My 2 cents.
