Well, like I've been saying, Duce has been so damn hesitant this preseason, it painfully obvious....

And word is that he came to camp out of shape...

Now if it were me...

And Bettis just retired, and knowing that unless I came in as a slob, the job was mine to lose, I'd make damn sure I was in top condition when camp started...

But he didn't, and so to answer your question, I really wouldn't be that surprised if he was dropped for Dayne...

Steelers re-sign Ike Taylor to four-year extension
By John Clayton
ESPN.com

Days after locking up one of their best young offensive players, Willie Parker, the Steelers gave one of their best defensive players, cornerback Ike Taylor, a four-year extension that makes him the highest-paid cornerback in team history.

On Sunday, Taylor agreed to a four-year extension that will keep him with the Steelers through 2010. He will receive $22.5 million and have a chance to make another $1.2 million, which could max out the package at $23.7 million based on his performance.

Included in the deal is $6.4 million in guarantees. There is another $1 million of roster bonus money toward the end of the contract.

Both sides came out of the deal happy. Taylor was rewarded for his development in Pittsburgh's defense after only one year as a starter. The Steelers, meanwhile, were able to lock up a cornerback for five seasons at a price that made them happy, particularly since the price of re-signing or obtaining cornerbacks is rising rapidly.

Taylor's one year as a starter was certainly significant. He started 16 games and helped take the team to the Super Bowl. Taylor is a big, physical cornerback at 6-foot-1, 191 pounds.

More than anything else, Taylor wanted to remain a Steeler. He was scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the 2006 season, but he had no desire to leave. Taylor developed a good relationship with the Rooney family, reputed to be among the best in sports at taking care of their players.

Taylor, 26, has played in 45 games during his first four seasons, starting 17. He was a fourth-round choice of the Steelers in 2003. He's played in two AFC Championship games and has one Super Bowl ring.

To accompany that ring, Taylor now has a deal that will keep him on the Steelers defense through 2010.

Big Ben's Appendix burst. He'll miss the season opener. Charlie Batch will step in for him...

Ben Roethlisberger missed no playing or practice time despite nearly dying during a June motorcycle accident. A case of appendicitis will keep him out of the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers' season opener.

Roethlisberger will sit out the NFL's showcase Thursday night game against Miami after having an appendectomy Sunday, not long after reporting for practice with stomach pains and nausea.

"The surgery went well," coach Bill Cowher said. "He is obviously going to be out this week and we will go week to week from there."

The operation was the third in less than a year for the 24-year-old Roethlisberger, who is off to one of the best career starts of any quarterback in NFL history. He was in the operating room for seven hours following his scary motorcycle accident on June 12, mostly to repair facial damage, and had arthroscopic knee surgery midway through last season.

Charlie Batch, a former Lions starter who was 2-0 as a fill-in for Roethlisberger last season, will start against the Dolphins.

"It's a situation that can happen to any football team. You can go out there and have a starter go down, whether it's an ankle or something else of that nature," Cowher said. "That's the nature of the business."

Roethlisberger's latest medical setback followed an uneventful training camp that began with questions about whether he was fully recovered from the crash and ended with him playing better in the preseason than he did a year ago.

It was not immediately known if the motorcycle accident might have caused any internal damage that subsequently resulted in the appendicitis. All of Roethlisberger's known injuries from the crash - a broken nose, orbital bones and upper and lower jaw, damaged teeth and a concussion - were to his head.

According to various medical journals, one cause of appendicitis can be a perforation in the appendix. But, unless there is severe bleeding, an otherwise healthy patient such as Roethlisberger often is released within 24 hours of an appendectomy and has a relatively short recovery time.

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward also had an appendectomy in 2002 and missed the final two exhibition games, but returned to make eight catches in the season opener against New England.

Thursday's game will be the fifth that Roethlisberger has missed since the middle of last season, when he sat out four games - three in a row - with two knee injuries. He also injured his right thumb Nov. 28 against the Colts - he has since said he broke it - but did not miss any playing time because of it.

The Steelers made the playoffs last season even with Roethlisberger sitting out one-quarter of their schedule, and Cowher said they will overcome this latest setback.

"Adversity is not what knocks you down, it is how you handle it and how you respond to it," he said. "This football team with its veterans has been down this road before, facing challenges and adversity."

The Steelers planned to begin the season with only two quarterbacks, Roethlisberger and Batch, plus rookie Omar Jacobs on their practice squad. But Cowher said they would bring in another quarterback immediately.

"We will assess the backup (situation) as the week goes on. This is the situation we are being dealt and we are not asking for any pity nor are we going to make any excuses," Cowher said. "We are going to get ready for Miami accordingly."

Roethlisberger is the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl, doing so at age 23 as the Steelers beat Seattle 21-10 on Feb. 5. He has a 27-4 record while leading the Steelers to two AFC championship games and one Super Bowl in two seasons.

Now that Roethlisberger is out, the Steelers may be without their two top skill position players against Miami.

Ward, a four-time Pro Bowl selection and the Super Bowl MVP, didn't have a full training camp practice after Aug. 3 because of a sore hamstring and is listed as questionable. He did not play in the preseason.

He went 2-0 last year, at Green Bay and at home vs. Cleveland...

He's a lot more mobile than Maddox, who's only been golfing since last year...

But anyway, it's irrelevant now, they've signed St. Pierre to the practice squad, where Omar Jacobs already is...

Just my guess, but I bet they'll bump Jacobs up to the main squad before Thursday.... Jacobs had a damn good preseason for a rookie...

Great teams find ways to win....

Now, I will say this.... Real Steeler fans know that there were several things NOT to like about their performance vs. the Fins...

Their tackling was piss poor for a good portion of the game...

The offensive line didn't do too much better in protecting Charlie, he was on the run for a lot of the time...

Pass defense was pretty poor as well, until the 4th quarter at least...

But, like I said, the great teams make adjustments and find ways to win....

And another twist of As The Penguins Sale Turns....

This one, if true, is not as bad as it seems, in fact it's good news IMO...

The press, once they got hold off Mr. Blackberry (Jim Balsillie) as one of the prospective owners, immediately speculated that his main objective would be to move the team to Hamilton....

But now it appears, again if true, that he's teaming up with Mark Cuban and Murstein to make a more powerful offer to buy the team....

Mark Cuban may be a fucking goofball, but there's no way Cuban, a Mt. Lebanon native, would be involved in anything to move the Penguins....

Pittsburgh Sale Nearing?

Sources tell me that CEO of RIM/Blackberry, James Balsillie, is involved in a group that includes Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban and Andy Murstein, president of Medallion Financial Corp. in New York looking to purchase the Pittsburgh Penguins. Balsillie could sign a purchase agreement as early as next week.

They just announced the update, dislocated shoulder....Supposedly it popped out, and they popped it back in the dressing room....

But the positive signs, at least for making the season opener vs. the Flyers on the 5th, is that he took the plane with the team back to the 'Burgh last night, with no sling, and joking with his teammates.... He also showed up at practice this morning, and although he didn't skate, didn't show any signs of being in pain....

So let's just hope he's good to go two weeks from today....

But boy did this guy juke a few Flyer defensemen out of their jocks when he was in there....

And of course, that SICK pass to LeClair, that he promptly fucked up....

POJO_Risin
10-05-2006, 12:50 PM
Plan A is dependent on the slot license for the Isle of Capri, one of three vying for the license...

if they get it....they will use 290 million to build an arena and complex for the Pens.

But it's far from a guarantee that they will get it...

POJO_Risin
10-05-2006, 12:54 PM
Plan B is a complicated sort...

but doable...

The Pens will front about 9 million...Plus about 3 million a year for naming rights...

both the other potential slot license winners have agreed to pay 7 1/2 million a year for 30 years to help fund the arena...and place their slots in the arena...

Another 7 million a year would come from the state...in a slots funded development program.

Of course...the part that's left out of this is who pays the bill up front...

Sounds doable...but again...in this saga...who knows...

POJO_Risin

Balsillie backed out of an earlier agreement when Bettman said that he had to try and keep the team in Pittsburgh...

Bettman says the same thing...

and frankly...

scares the shit out of me...

If Isle of Capri gets the license...it's a done deal...

No, don't misunderstand me big guy...

Even the biggest optimists have to concur that if the slots license fails, then Plan B talks break down, then yeah, it's all over...

What I'm saying is that the new owner, IMO, will make every attempt to make Plan B work, unless the city/county can't make a deal work....

Which is not going to happen, with everything I'm reading about those parties being willing right now to negotiate, which the Pens can't really do right now until they get word in December about who wins the slots license.

POJO_Risin
10-06-2006, 07:18 PM
Thing is...from what my Dad's been telling me...Lemieux thinks the Plan B deal stinks...

how come? I read an article the other day that had Rendell "pleading" with Lemieux to agree to "plan B" right now...or endorse it...and he wouldn't because of "discretions."

Now if those discretions are that he's not the owner when it all goes down...that's one thing...

But the thing is bro...thing about how you are about sports. Let's say YOU were buying the Pens in July, and wanted to move them to Virginia Beach. You'd spent your life there...your business is there...everything is there. You want to bring your Peeps an NHL club. Then you realize Mario won't sell if you are moving the team. Not the NHL...not really...but Mario. So you pull your name out of the hat. Watch for a couple of months...then come back...and loe and behold...ready to leave the team in Pittsburgh? I know how stubborn you are...and I really know how stubborn I am.

I think he'll "try" to keep the team in Pittsburgh...but I don't think he'll make "every attempt" to do it. I think he'll be as passive as he can be...and if the "chips" fall where they may...so be it...

I DON'T think that it will be an issue...I really don't...because I don't think the license will go elsewhere...

but if it does...I see trouble...

Va Beach VH Fan
10-06-2006, 09:31 PM
The thing about the Pens not commenting on Plan B is that they've said from the start that they are contractually aligned with Isle Of Capri, and until that slots license is resolved, they won't comment or do any negotiations with Plan B.

So while some say that they're not commenting on Plan B because they don't like it, I think it's because they're keeping loyal to the IOC agreement, until that time comes....

Plan B would leave Pens at center ice
Deal comparable to others given in NHL
Saturday, October 07, 2006

By Mark Belko, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Gov. Ed Rendell's Plan B for financing a new hockey arena here would be a middling deal for the Penguins, compared to other recent arena projects involving National Hockey League teams.

It would require the Penguins to kick in $128.5 million over 30 years toward the arena's $563.5 million cost plus debt service -- or 22.8 percent.

Since 2000, National Hockey League teams have contributed anywhere from zero to more than 30 percent of the cost of building arenas in the cities in which they play.

Plan B could be the key to keeping the Penguins in Pittsburgh under new owner Jim Balsillie if Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. does not win the state license for the Pittsburgh slot machine casino.

To the Penguins and Mr. Balsillie, Isle of Capri offers the best of all deals -- a pledge of $290 million upfront to cover the entire cost of a new arena, with no team money involved. It guarantees that the Penguins would stay put.

Mr. Balsillie, a Canadian businessman, wanted last summer to move the team to Ontario, but more recently has indicated he would try to keep it in Pittsburgh, contingent on a workable deal for a new arena.

Plan B is the fallback if Isle of Capri, one of three casino bidders, doesn't win the competition. It calls for the team to put in $8.5 million up front, plus $4 million per year over 30 years.

Another $7.5 million a year for 30 years would come from the winning casino bidder, either Forest City Enterprises or PITG Gaming LLC, and $7 million a year from a slots-financed state economic development fund, under Mr. Rendell's plan.

In dollars, the $128.5 million would be more than the Columbus Blue Jackets (zero), Minnesota Wild ($35 million), Phoenix Coyotes ($40 million) and New Jersey Devils ($100 million) have paid or, in the case of the Devils, will pay for a new arena.

The only bigger contribution in dollars was for the American Airlines Center in Dallas, where the basketball Mavericks and hockey Stars put in a combined $295 million toward the $420 million construction.

Plan B's 22.8 percent for the Penguins is lower than the Stars/Mavericks' 70.2 percent and the Devils' 32.2 percent but higher than the Blue Jackets' zero, the Coyotes' 18.1 percent, and the Wild's 21.2 percent.

Neil deMause, co-author of Field of Schemes, a book about stadium financing controversies, said the Plan B deal appears to be in the middle of the pack, or as he put it, "about par for the course in terms of sweetheart deals."

Arena deals, he said, tend to be "pretty [bad] ones for the public so being right in the middle ... is not something to be proud of."

Allen Sanderson, senior lecturer in economics at the University of Chicago, said the present value of the team contribution under Plan B would be in the neighborhood of $50 million to $60 million.

"In present-value terms, that's such a small fraction of the value of the facility. That's a deal," he said.

Whether it's a deal Mr. Balsillie can accept remains to be seen. In speaking with reporters Thursday, he threw his support behind the Isle of Capri proposal but had little to say about Plan B.

Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl spoke to a representative of Mr. Balsillie for the first time yesterday. Both have said that Plan B terms are negotiable.

Mr. Ravenstahl said the most recent arena deals show that "we're right in the mix. We're in position to have discussions and ultimately to be successful."

Neither he nor Mr. Onorato engaged in any negotiations with the representative of Mr. Balsillie in their first talk yesterday. Mr. Ravenstahl said the conversation was "more of an introductory type of thing."

Although Mr. Balsillie spoke of the urgency of building a new arena Thursday, Mr. Ravenstahl said he does not expect formal negotiations to begin until the NHL approves the sale. That may not come until December, when the NHL Board of Governors is next scheduled to meet.

Ye of little faith... :D

To be honest, the consensus is that the Forest City group (Harrah's) has the edge, of course because of political reasons..

And of course politics has nothing to do with common sense, i.e. if IOC wins, they front the entire 290 million for the arena....

Although, with the recent news that Harrah's just got a bid to be taken over, that may skew things....

We'll know in December....

Well...I can tell you this...

I grew up in Cleveland...and watched a team leave...

Why?

Not because of the fans...the place sold out weekly...equally as rabid as our Steelers

Why?

because of a stadium. Modell wanted a stadium. Now, Cleveland had turned down a stadium proposal a year or so earlier...and Modell used it to ride his fucking broom out of town. Thing is...Cleveland was going to build him a stadium (since the ultimately did). He had just run the team into a ground and needed a sweetheart deal to stay afloat.

Reality though...is that any sensible business man could make a team work in Cleveland because of the fan base.

this is what I compare every potential move too...because I remember when I first heard about the move...I thought...and so did everyone else..."NO WAY."

Now...with the Pens move...I see many striking similarities...

NOBODY WANTS them to move seemingly...

They've had issues with building a new building...

and now...they have an owner who truth be told, would rather have a team closer to home (although any moron would take Plan A because he pays nothing for new digs).

I have faith...

but in plan A...because it's to good to be true.

Yeah, we still lost the game ourselves, but the Ben hit and just taking our chance at 3 points at the end... those two together. It's complete BS.

Yes I am aware of the irony of a Steelers fan bitching about calls.

I'm just so pissed about this game. That onsides kick? That will work 1 out of every 5 times.

Our special teams really lost the game, in my opinion.

The defense played good overall, but they were on the field too much... because of special teams.

I am so sick of teams getting 1st downs with 3rd and 20.

It doesn't matter, the season's toast now. I'm not wearing my special mojo hat at all this season. F' it.

What is up with the Steelers this year? How have they gone from being Super Bowl champs to being a losing team in such a short amount of time? I thought the Super Bowl losers were the ones that were supposed to have a bad season the next year, not the victors! Are the loss of Antwaan Randle El and Jerome Bettis hurting them that much? You know this all started when Big Ben had that motorcycle wreck...he's been all out of sorts and hasn't been the same since.

I spent the weekend in Canton, Oh. to take in the Hall Of Fame Game. If you haven't gone, GO! It was a blast. It is played in a high school stadium next to the Pro Football Hall Of Fame. I may post details about the experience later, but for now, I'd like to focus on the Steelers. My seats were in the 11th row at the 40 yard line, and the hits were SO LOUD.

The Steelers won the toss and elected to recieve. Willie Reid muffed. I was thinking , "Oh shit here we go again." But, after a short running play, Big Ben exploited ex-Bengal Kevin Kaesviharn with a 55 yard pass to Cedrick Wilson. The 5 play drive was punctuated by a Steeler TD.

Then Colston, Bush, Brees and the Saints were 3 and out. PUNT.

Enter Charlie batch. First play...17 yard pass to Wilson, a couple rushes by Davenport, and a 40 yard pass attempt to Wilson (which should have drawn a pass interfence flag). Punt.

Same first string Saints, same result...3 and out. PUNT!

The Steelers quickly went to 2nd and 3rd stringers with scoring drives by 1st 2nd and 3rd string QBs.

The defense looked very good as well. The hits were unreal. There was even a knock out scored by Steelers corner William Gay against a Saints reciever. Gay also got an interception. In the first half, Pittsburgh outgained New Orleans 305-56, including 205-32 in the air. Overall, it was 413-214.
Steelers 20 Saints 7

It may be early, but the Tomlin era has started off loud and proud.

He's not gay, unlike "Steely McBeam" whom looks like an extra from the Village People.

But yeah,m, Pretty much the most awesome classic logo ever. When the Browns were THE team in the NFL/Pro Football from '46-'64 it was there logo.

So, you may know that the Browns were named after popular coaching god Paul Brown by a newspaper contest in 1945 in which the prize was a $1,000 war bond. However, what remained a mystery to me was how the Browns' elf, "Brownie", became the team mascot. Nowhere on the Browns' official website can I find any information regarding Brownie--probably because the Browns foolishly stopped using his likeness circa... sometime in the past.

We keep tabs on what search terms visitors may use to find our blog. And recently, it seems that maybe half of the new visitors to the Mistake by the Lake Sporting Times have found us by searching for something like "brownie elf browns" or "brownie mascot". They can find us just because of one tiny entry I did in a past Born and Raised mentioning how I liked the Brownie the Elf parkas the Browns now wore. Intrigued by this unknown interest in Brownie, I myself went searching for the history of the logo.

It turns out that a Brownie is actually a type of elf in Northern European folklore. Apparently they live in homes and aid in household tasks at night. Oh, and they have no nose. I suppose that after the team was named the Browns, the front office realized the difficulty in finding a logo outside of using a picture of Paul Brown or the color brown itself. They might have contemplated using the baked dessert brownie, but eventually settled on the elf version. This is a modern day approximant of what a Brownie would look like.

Source: Ravens ask NFL for no prime-time game in Pittsburgh

By Jamison Hensley | jamison.hensley@baltsun.com 11:21 AM EDT, March 20, 2009

Contrary to rumors, the Ravens are not expected to kick off the 2009 regular season at the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers in the Thursday night season opener.

As part of their scheduling requests to the league, the Ravens asked not to play a prime-time game at Heinz Field this season, a team official told The Baltimore Sun.

The Ravens have played a nationally televised game at Pittsburgh for three of the past four seasons, including the past two years. The Ravens have never won a prime-time game at Pittsburgh, losing all four times.

It has become tradition that the defending Super Bowl champion opens the NFL season with a nationally televised game at home. There were rumors that the league would begin with Ravens-Steelers, a rematch of the AFC championship game.

The first games of the 2009 season -- the prime-time games for Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights -- are expected to be announced next week at the NFL owners meetings. The rest of the regular-season schedule is usually announced in April.

I'm reading Three Bricks Shy of a Load right now and they are talking about hitting. Mike Wagner I believe was pointing out that the way you get hurt is when you're scared and you flinch right before contact. That's baltimore's whole method of operation. They're weak.

You need to sell out the hit and be aggressive. Wagner said not being afraid of the hits was the only way to survive them.

Six-Time Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers open pre-season Thursday night at home vs. Arizona....

I get a couple texts a day from the Steelers....

From what I gather;

- Ziggy Hood is gonna be a horse, he's gonna get significant playing time THIS YEAR, since the D-line is getting long in the teeth...

- Limas Sweed is having a very good camp, looks like between he and Wallace for the #3 receiver

- Mike Wallace is having a GREAT camp, catching everything thrown at him....

- Darnell Stapleton's knee injury is not good, although he's not out for the year... They signed Alex Stepanovich from OSU just in case....

POJO_Risin
08-11-2009, 09:09 PM
As good a camp as Limas Sweed is having, everything I'm hearing is that both Shaun McDonald and Mike Wallace are exceeding him in both speed and hands.

Personally...I could care a less. All three performing does nothing but help the Steelers.

One of my good friends from High School sent me a ton of pictures from camp, and the Steelers staff had Ziggy Hood predominantly displayed in nearly every line drill, but not with the starters for the most part. Aaron Smith wasn't there, and Nick Eason replaced him. Tomlin at his best, firing up the kid I'm sure. As you said Va, the Steelers line is long in the tooth (and so much fucking younger than me damn it), but Hood may turn out to be one of their best linemen. We'll see. Everything is in his favor to play a lot.

Stepanovich was a very, very good player at Ohio State, and comes from a long line of solid centers and offensive horses in the middle. If it weren't for injuries, Stepanovich would still be a starter in the league. Perhaps he is finally recovered enough to resemble a solid player.

I don't want to talk about the damn line though...

I was pleased with the performance of all three #3 receivers. Like POJO said, who cares which one wins the job since he'll be the best for the Steelers. Sweed is so huge though. I remember when the Steelers had Plax and all you had to do was throw it high and slightly out of bounds and you had a no risk pass play.

And ah yes the outside linebackers. Best tandem in the league.

I remember a couple of good plays, but I agree, he didn't reach his potential until he got to NYC. At that point he really proved his potential - being a total dipshit.

Plax never reached his potential. With his size, he should have dominated the inside and the outside.

He's never really done that with any sort of consistency.

What he can do well is go up with a corner, work them until they are out of position, and make spectacular catches.

I liked him...wanted him to stay a Steeler...but of course...in hindsight...am glad he is gone.

I ask you...would he have ever made that catch that Holmes made...after the near catch on the other side?

Sweed...there's just something tenacious about him. He dropped that ball last year, than made a couple of good catches afterwards. This year...he's been nothing short of spectacular. He has way more upside than Nate Washington...and will certainly take over for Ward. Why? HE CAN BLOCK!

Mike Wallace...to me...is slashish in many ways. He's lightning fast...and can return like a demon....along with Stefan Logan. I'm saying it...

In two years, the Steelers may have gone from the worst special teams...to the best...

Nothing against Mewelde Moore...but does he need to even return punts anymore?

They've got a good aggressive defense, especially against the run, so the fact that the Steelers running game didn't do shit isn't causing me to panic, not just yet anyway... And I'm really hoping my decision to keep Parker doesn't come back and bite me in the butt-ocks....

I thought the O-line made some good adjustments after halftime, although for some reason the Titans didn't blitz as much, and Ben made them pay....

Once again, the most overrated CB in football, Ike Taylor, had yet another shitty game....

I hope Troy's injury isn't worse than the 3-6 weeks they've been saying.... Strange, he walked into the locker room with hardly a limp... Then again, that guy is a specimen...

So yeah, a win is a win is a win.... They go on the road to Chicago where it should go well, but you now how I feel about trap games on the road, and this one falls directly into that category...

I feel like I'm writing the blog again... :D

The Bears aren't really a trap game. The Steelers will have a game much like what they just played against the Titans. Ball control tough defensive efforts. The touchdown Roethlisberger threw was 40 yards on a rope.

Nah, sorry dude.... The Bears are NOT the Titans....

That was the same shit they said when Erlacher and Co. came into Heinz Field and promptly got their asses handed to them....

BUT, if the Steelers think it's going to be an easy game, then I'd agree, they could lose it...

They won...

I agree with this Va...their line played better in the second...but likely BECAUSE there was less blitzing.

The offensive line still fucking blows.

Timmons not playing in my book was huge on the defensive side, and his return will soften the blow of Troy...because they play similarly...although obviously coming from different directions...

Parker and that run game? Well...

Well...

They won...

Chicago is likely better than Va gives them credit for. Cutler is far superior to any QB they've had since Grossman's luck year three years ago, and could provide troubles with TroyP out of the game. Their offense will be much improved...but we are talking about the Steelers' offense.

I think it's less of a trap game, and more of a good game that the Steelers should win.

I'd be more worried if we were playing the Browns or the Bengals...

Love Jerome's objectivity here...

John Fox's job in jeopardy; Pittsburgh*defense in trouble - Jerome Bettis - SI.com (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jerome_bettis/09/14/bus.stops/1.html)

3. One more reason Pittsburgh's in trouble: these Steelers are a mediocre running team on their best day. I don't think they've reached a panic situation quite yet because the Titans don't allow anyone to run the football on them. But there are serious problems.

Willie Parker: I haven't seen much from him. Rashard Mendenhall: I haven't really seen him, period. One thing I have seen is Mewelde Moore making plays. And I think the little guy's going to get more of those opportunities as the Steelers continue to grow into what I think will be more of a passing team in 2009.

The running back I like least on that team is Frank Summers, the rookie fullback. He doesn't seem to understand what's going on. He's missing plenty of blocks, and that's affecting everything. That definitely has to be addressed off the field this week.

The bigger problem, though, is the offensive line. They have no continuity. On top of not being able to protect Ben Roethlisberger, they're letting running backs get hit before they reach the line of scrimmage. There's not a lot any back can do in that situation.

This problem isn't anything new, and I blame the coaching staff for not addressing the line in the offseason. How did they rationalize not doing anything about it? Well, they won a Super Bowl. They won't be so lucky twice in a row. If Ben continues to get hit the way he did Thursday -- the same way he did last year, then this will come back to haunt the Steelers. Ben will get hurt. Ben will miss games. And they don't have a line to run behind without Ben. Pittsburgh can't repeat with the line playing like this.

Ok Troy is out for a few weeks, but the athletic Timmons can help in the middle... except he re-injured his god damn ankle in practice yesterday!!! SHIT!

Ok, Fox has been labeled a better run stopper than Timmons, but we could really use a quick game changer in the flats and all of that. Oh well, ain't gonna happen.

Sweed also sprained his foot yesterday, luckily we have Wallace and McDonald to lessen the blow.

Regarding the run game, I'm not sure that Parker is done quite yet, and remember he played very little in the preseason which might explain his sheepishness in hitting the holes. Either way I'm glad we don't have him signed past this year. I love ya' Willie, but we're trying to win football games.

Shit, Cutler looked so bad out there Sunday, if he is half as confused by the Steeler D we should be ok.

I'm just glad the game is on TV here. Steelers games are not the same without the old bong and whiskey bottle handy. That's the only way I got through the week 1 shit kicking festival. God damn right back to the Superbowl with the tension. I kept forgetting it was week one and not a "must win". My voice is just now recovering.

I don't fault you for being a bengals fan or for friendly schmack talk. But the who dey chant is the gayest slogan in the history of gayness. It's also ebonics at the same time, which is a weird combo. Also, Bill Cowher owns that chant as he told the team in no uncertain terms that the Steelers were in fact "we dey" after their win in the Queen City in the playoffs in January 2006. This was recorded by NFL films for all to see. I usually can't swear and be homophobic at football blogs, but at the good ol' Army? Fuck it. It's a gay chant from a weak team.

That said the Bengals appear to be a solid team right now and I look forward to the rematch in Pittsburgh with apprehension. Bummer about Odom.

On to the Steelers in week 7 against Purple Jesus and the Favre-Fossil! I think if the Steelers play to their strength which is throwing the football, and exploit their depth at receiver against a squad that is potentially missing it's best CB, they should be able to put up enough points. I'd be much more confident with Aaron Smith anchoring the D-line, but that's the NFL. Injuries are a bitch and depth brings championships.

For the Steelers D, I used to be very comfortable watching them, but without Smith it will take awhile for me to trust his replacements. I hope Troy can get more burst than last week and I'd love to see Woodley and Harrison and Timmons knock Favre on his ass a couple times. He's a cagey old bastard though and will no doubt throw some balls away at the last second and probably connect on some screens and dump-offs that way.

2. Not thrilled with the play calling in the second half.... Basically trying not to lose as opposed to trying to win....

4. Favray took what the defense gave him, and the CB's gave him just about everything he wanted....

The AFC playoffs will be amazing this year. Colts, Patriots, Steelers, Bengals, Chargers and the sixth team up for grabs. 5. I've heard several times that this team isn't going to fall into the trap of lax play after a super bowl...but that's exactly what I'm saying. They are either too tired, to content...or both.

6. Charlie Batch throws the football like a fucking powderpuff girl...

I've mellowed out a lot in my old age when it comes to my teams...

Today's loss would've been a remote tossing incident back in the day....

I'm to the point nowadays where I don't mind the Steelers losing to decent teams at all, and yes, I put Cincy in that list now, at least this year....

But what furiates me is how year after year they play down to their opponent and either barely squeak it out or flat-out lose, like today....

That screams unpreparedness to me, whether that's being communicated by the coaching staff or the collective mindset of the players...

I know hindsight is 20/20, and Poj you know how I love predicting the "T" game, but I swear as soon as I saw that kickoff ran back, I yelled out "TRAP GAME" !!!

The only silver lining is that Cincy overlooked Oakland and lost also, I still don't think Cincy's lead is insurmountable....

The Steelers play the Ravens next week, in a crucial game. And they may be starting a third string QB who has thrown only one pass in his NFL career.

Steelers' Batch Out 6 Weeks; 'Big Ben' Hurt

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback Charlie Batch has a wrist injury that requires surgery and will sideline him for six weeks, a source close to the team told Channel 11 News.

Batch's injury couldn’t have come at a worse time, as starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured and left Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs with 12:21 remaining in overtime.

Big Ben took a knee to the helmet while being sacked. The Chiefs went on to win 27-24.

"He took a blow; needless to say, it was a concussion-oriented thing, so I doubt he was going to come back into the football game," head coach Mike Tomlin said. "I don't have a lot of information in terms of where he is or his level of availability. We will have more information as we proceed."

Roethlisberger had thrown for 398 yards and three TDs before he was relieved by Batch.

There is no word on Roethlisberger's status right now. After the game, he said he felt OK, but he's expected to undergo tests Monday to determine the extent of the injury.

Third-string quarterback Dennis Dixon, who the Steelers drafted in 2008, has only thrown one pass in his NFL career with the team.

It is unclear at this time what moves the Steelers will make in light of Batch's injury.

I've been saying it for about 7 or 8 years now, and Poj can back me up on this....

I NEVER worry about the Steelers when they play decent/good opponents.... That doesn't mean they always win of course, but I know that if they do end up losing, it won't be because of a lack of focus or preparation, lackadaisical, etc....

It's when they face the inferior teams, and that's both at home and on the road.... The focus isn't there, the intensity isn't there, yadda, yadda....

They did it at Oakland a few years ago, at Arizona, at Denver and at the Jets a couple years ago (I predicted all 3 of those), at Chicago and at KC this year, and there are others.....

So IMO, if they end up getting a wild card again this year, just like in '05, I have no problem at all with them going on the road against GOOD teams.... They have better than average chances of beating anyone in the AFC on the road, although if they don't get their shit in gear, that won't happen...

I'm really disappointed with Logan's performance, considering how he did in the preseason...

Well, where to start....

Not saying anything else on the CB's, but I will say that the message boards have really jumped on the "overrated CB's" bandwagon....

But this so-called "vaunted" defense has some serious holes... Missed tackle after missed tackle... That 4th and 5 was unbelievable, not that they got the first down after Rice easily beat Farrior, but the missed tackles after that...

As for Dixon, yeah he had the bad INT in OT, but overall I think he played well enough to win... The Arians playcalling was beyond conservative, including at the end of the first half with fucking 1:40 left in the half and they run out the clock.... That's unreal....

Would I feel secure with Dixon as a permanent #2 QB ?? I dunno, the jury is still out...

The funny part is that the one game that Ben doesn't play, the O-line doesn't give up a sack, and against Baltimore of all teams !!

A part of me wants them to not make the playoffs, its deserving of how poor they've been playing.

Of course, the other part of me thinks all they need is to squeak in the back door, and then anything can happen....

Thought I'd mix in some laughter to the Bucs along with the anger towards the Steelers...

Bucs non-tendered Matt Capps last night...

Teams had been asking about trading for him during the winter meetings, but the front office turned them all down....

But instead of getting at least a decent mid-level prospect, these stupid fuckers out-right non-tender him, now's he's a fucking free agent...

I'd always thought Capps was overrated to begin with, ya know a 95 MPH fastball isn't really what you'd call overpowering nowadays....

But at least they could've gotten SOMETHING for him....

Steelers getting set for a coaching overhaul...

I'm assuming they are going to nail Ligashesky to a fence post, and I would have to think your boy, Va, Zierlein is going to need to find a new job next year as well.

Perhaps Arians?

I wouldn't go out that way, if I were him. But perhaps with a line that's injured daily, a suspect set of corners that are being molested each game because Troy isn't there, and safety's that play with Lebeau-like wreckless abandon, and likely will never be healthy for more than 10 games a year ever again...

Maybe he won't be back.

Of course...maybe he wants the challenge.

It's not as bad as it appears...and health can fix a lot...but age can unfix a lot as well...and they aren't going to be getting any younger...

and that line isn't going to be getting any better...

San Diego beating the Titans up pretty bad tonight, in Tennessee....
