no way was that a call you can make either way...

so I guess now Seattle fans have their excuse if they lose...

the ball was right up against the endzone line...it either barely crossed...or barely didn't...

and if Seattle had run the same play...I'D BE SAYING THE SAME FUCKING THING...

I just wonder about the Darryl Jackson play...

did the ball cross the TD line before his foot stepped out of bounds...or...did his other foot hit the pylon before his other foot stepped out...

but if you are going to bitch about that 3rd down play...and say that's the game...your head is up your ass...not to mention the fact that they would have had the ball on the 1 cm line...and Roeth would have scored on the very next play anyways...

chripes...

Bottom line, if the ball hits the ground before it goes into any part of the in zone, you can't give the team in question 6 points. Period.

Yet - it's happened.

Sorry, but that's my understanding of the rules. Poj, you and I are going to have to disagree on the play, I guess...

Ah well...

If the Steelers win it by any measure of 6 points in any direction, at all, then they had the game given to them. And I'll argue that all my life and nobody will ever convince me otherwise.

Ah well...

So then you can difinitively tell me from a replay where the ball was under Roeth's Arm when it crossed the line...

and his arm did go over the front part of the line...before he went down...and the ball hit the ground...

you could see through his arm...to where the ball was...

nice...

maybe you ARE fucking superman...because that's the only way you can say that ball...100% for sure didn't cross the line...

What I'm curious about is why the refs haven't just awared the Steelers the ball in the in zone for six points...might as well, ref preference can't get any much more flagrant in this craptacular Superbowl...

Thing is, I was sorta pulling for Seattle, considering, but I'm NOT a Seattle fan...not by a long shot...

No, just somebody who likes a fair and balanced game.

Which this HAS NOT been.

I'll freely admit Seattles "dropped the ball" quite a bit, but they've had some really shitty calls going against them.

No denying that, man.

Defintly agree. The whole Week the media has sounded like they've had the steelers cocks in their mouth all week. And the refs sound like they're doing it too.

POJO_Risin
02-05-2006, 09:39 PM
Yeah...but you aren't even bitching about the right shitty calls...

You are bitching about 2 calls that really wouldn't have made much of a difference...

you are bitching about a call THAT IS REFUTABLE...no matter which way you look at it...

and it was 3rd down...meaning there was another down...on the 1-inch line...and gee...I wondered if they would have scored...

then you start bitching about if they win by 6...so I suppose they wouldn't even have gotten a field goal on the play...

which is beside the point...

then you are bitching about a 15 yard personal foul...that wouldn't have much mattered on that flea flicker anyways...

Now if you'd start bitching about the play or 2 that actually had something to do with effecting the outcome of the game...then I'd listen...but until then...

I'll deny it all I want...

Seattle is losing because they missed 2 field goals...and threw an interception inside the 20...

no more...no less...

You too?

Actually, it's funny...the local paper had a good write up this morning about how (guess!) Seattle's legs would be virtually broken by flagrant referee sidedness and THAT would be why they'd lose.

If Seattle DOES pull out a miracle win (which won't happen, probably), it'll be against all odds...

No...you're arguing the TD...that SHOULDN'T have been called back...and nearly was...any other year...that gets called a TD...and doesn't get reviewed...

and even if IT GETS CALLED BACK...they still score...

and you are bitching about the personal foul call...which means what?...nothing...INT still stands...they still score on a wide open flea flicker that woulda worked from the 40 as well as it did from the 50...

The ONLY call...that had a direct effect...

well...I'll let you tell me...

The refs suck, they've sucked more and more each year since the Brady tuck rule debacle.

Questionable, often ludicrous calls may not decide games, but they EFFECT THE PLAYERS.

The players decide games.

As an outsider I'm a bit cuntfused by the whole thing.

In proper football, you know the one that 90% of the world plays then there has been a huge debate for ages that if we brought in video evidence then it would stop all the arguments and improve things.

Watching this it doesn't seem to help at all...

How can they look at some of these decisions on video and do that?

Maybe it's like boxing and all bought and paid for?

Here's my last word on the game.....

I can't say the Steelers didn't play good, particularly in the second half. But they gave the MVP to the wrong guy. Without the Diebold referee, this was a 24-21 ballgame in Seattle's favor.

That's not being a woman, a pussy, or sour grapes, it's just the facts.

Think I'll skip the Pro Bowl though and not think about football until August. :(

END OF STORY.

You wanna site the 'TUCK RULE' as a bad call by the refs? Well, little ladies, they went to overtime in that game...Oakland could have won it then...

That sounds just great , if this were a movie or some shit, but this was the fucking Superbowl!

First, they give Pittsburgh the TD when he was not in. Now way that call should be made if he didn't see him in...and he didn't! Not until after he was down...we all saw it.

Then they fail to call offside and instead give a holding call against Seattle to take them away from a first and goal at the 2.

And one more call, a 15 yard mystery blocking below the knees penalty to Hasselbeck when he was making a tackle, for fucks sakes (probably the worst of the lot) after the INT.

Tell me that didn't help that fateful drive.

No, too many mistakes against one team in a Superbowl...you can't convince me otherwise.

I know the NFL was jonesing for a marquee matchup, but I guess their hype-machine will settle for a "Bettis returns home and triumphs" headline.

How Holmgren didn't call out the officiating directly, I'll never know

I think they would have got in anyways, and it was so close.

My point is no way the ref who made the call could see it and waited to see after the fact. He can't call a TD like that.

Props to Pittsburgh for making the big plays that Seattle didn't.

I like their team.

Nope. He was completely down, and then tried to sneak his arm over the line. Granted, if he was inside the one yard line, they probably would have scored on the next play anyway.

Just as the Seahawks would have scored on the next play after the reception on the 1 yard line.

It was a good game otherwise that got ruined by horrible officiating.

How the fuck is a ref ENFORCING A FUCKING RULE double jeopardy? The rule was on the books. It's not like the Colts, who BITCHED to the rules commitee and got the 5 yard rule 'enforced' the next year...so Doug Flutie's dropkick against Miami a few weeks ago (a game that I was at, and I was at the 'Tuck Rule' game too :)) shouldnt have counted just because it hadnt happened in 40 years?

LMFAO...

I seriously don't see the hostility....

The offensive pass interference was iffy, yes, I totally concur with that...

But you Seahawk fans need to understand the rules of the game....

First, the referee ruled that Roeth's ball crossed the plane of the goal THE FIRST TIME, not when he lunged the second time.....

So, that means that any video replay would have to produce IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE that he did not....

And obviously, there wasn't any evidence of that kind... It was very close, but I really believe that the tip of the football crossed the plain of the goalline....

But like I said, it's my contention that the ball crossed the plain of the goal the first time around....

Are you from Pennsyltucky? I'm guessing not, so did you hop on the bandwagon in the super-70's when you were a little kid looking for identity, and saw a goofy Bradshaw emerge as a super-QB despite the fact he talks like he fell out of a trailer park outside Roanoke?

Artist: Kenny Loggins Lyrics
Song: Playing with the Boys Lyrics

I'd say it was the right time
To walk away
When dreaming takes you nowhere
It's time to play
Bodies working overtime
Your money don't matter
The clock keeps ticking
When someone's on your mind

I'm moving in slow motion
Feels so good
It's a strange anticipation
Knock, knock, knocking on wood
Bodies working overtime
Man against man
And all that ever matters
Is baby who's ahead in the game
Funny but it's always the same

[Chorus]
Playing, playing with the boys
Playing, playing with the boys
After chasing sunsets
One of life's simple joys
Is playing with the boys

Said it was the wrong thing
For me to do
I said it's just a boys' game
Girls play too
My heart is working overtime
In this kind of game
Someone gets hurt
I'm afraid that someone is me
If you want to find me, I'll be
Playing with the boys

I don't want to be the moth around your fire
I don't want to be obsessed by your desire
I'm ready, I'm leaving
I've seen enough
I've got to go
You play too rough

Now that I've sobered up, I realize that the Seahawks didn't make any big plays and the Steelers made 3.

That was the difference.

Why must the NFL use a different ball for each play in the Superbowl?

The game itself is marginalized enough already. Why make it more difficult for QBs to apply their craft?

Fucking stupid if you ask me.

I give full credit to Pittsburgh for making big plays, but...

to say that the 15 yard penalty didn't matter after the INT, is not accurate.

I mean it's one thing to find out your wife has ben cheating on you.

It is quite another for you to find out that she was cheating on you with your brother, and your wife is actually your sister.

My point is that Football is about momentum, and Seattle got kicked in the ass by that play, and then buried alive with the penalty.

Whose to say Seattle's D doesn't rise to the challenge and force yet another 3 and out? Momentum. The penalty matters.

Championship teams overcome adversity for sure, but by that point they had so much shit to overcome...

Again, full credit for Pittsburgh for taking advantage

Ken Schram Commentary: Steelers Get Ring, We Get The Finger

February 6, 2006

By Ken Schram

SEATTLE - A few of my colleagues here in the KOMO 4 newsroom have proclaimed that I'm a sore loser.

Not withstanding the fact that they're 'Stealer' fans, they're right.

The way I figure it, Sunday's Super Bowl score should have been 21-14, Seahawks.

That's what it would have been except for the 'Stealers' ' secret weapon: The officials.

I sure hope someone is checking referee Bill Leavy's bank account today.

The way he called the game Sunday, I'm surprised that when it was all over, he didn't run up to the camera to exclaim: "I'M GOING TO DISNEYWORLD, 'CAUSE NOW I OWN IT!"

The Seahawks would have been better off if Stevie Wonder had been given a striped shirt and whistle so that he could call the game, leaving Bill Leavy to sing "My Cherie Amore."

Sour grapes?

You know it.

Sure, mistakes made by the Seahawks kept them from scoring more, but the unbelievably bad calls from Bill Leavy and crew stole away all the points that were needed to win.

The 'Stealers' say they wanted one more win"...for the thumb."

In the process, the Seahawks just got the finger.

So, when those folks I work with call me a sore loser, the only retort I have for them is: Damn Right!

By the way, if you want to make your thoughts known to the NFL, you can write to them at:

Probably more likely to be a personal grudge on Leavey's part against Mike Holmgren. The ABC talking heads implied as much, when they mentioned this blind crooked jackass used to ref when Holmgren was a high school football coach back in the 70's.

I agree the SEAHAWKS blew it. They had some real shit calls against 'em, but they were playing a highly mortal STEELER's team that day. It's been said that great teams overcome bad-calls (which there definitely were, and it's both disappointing and a little outrageous to see the biggest NFL game called like is was a bunch of hung over Pop Warner refs out there). But still, WHITE dropped three big passes that were in his hands.

You are stoned. The sweatband is on his forearm. Which by the way, is crossing the plane of the goal line. He is also holding the ball in a one arm tuck. Therefore the tip of the ball is in 1 of 2 places.....in the elbow pit, or behind it. The other end of the ball is clearly in his hand. So, if the forearm crossed the goal line as you have stated, it is physically impossible for the ball not to have crossed. Also, keep in mind that this shot is from a perspective of 10 to 20 degrees behind the goal line. So, unless his forearm is about 16 inches thick, the ball broke the plane. TOUCHDOWN!!!!:D

It doesn't matter.

The thing about that play that is fucked is ref is about to signal 4th down because he didn't see it break plane, and changes his mind after seeing ball move completely over the line after play was dead. WTF?

Whatever, that was a td probably, anyway.

Hopefully, shitty officiating throughout entire playoffs will be corrected

I need to watch the ref in that part of the video again because it doesn't make sense that a superbowl ref would make an error like that.

The pass interference call?

is that the one you are talking about?

I thought it was a bad call...and when you put it together with the rest of the calls...it magnifies...

but when you cut and put your hand on a guy...it's going to get called 9 out of 10 times...

I thought the call blew ass...but...again...it's a call that gets called more often then not...

Super Bowl wasn't the biggest game this year

To a nation that was ready for something resembling football, please note that Super Bowl XL just didn't fit.

One team played poorly; the other team lost the game.
For the record, the supporting actors weren't much better.

Two-platoon service was applied to the rendering of our national anthem. The halftime show was begging for someone to enforce the NFL's tuck rule. The officiating packed far more humor than any of the TV commercials.

But this may be what we've come to expect for football's biggest day. In case you hadn't noticed, it's been a while since the Super Bowl was more about the football than the party.

Unfortunately for the NFL, The Big Game really didn't qualify for big-game status this season. This news is pretty disturbing, especially when you consider the lineup of stinkers that defined the league's playoff season.

So, which game deserves our salute as the big one for the past season?

That's easy. In terms of anticipation, level of play and a compelling ending, Super Bowl XL was no match for BCS Championship Game VIII.

However, before examining how USC-Texas was far superior to the Seattle Seahawks vs. Pittsburgh Steelers, please note that I still despise the BCS format. I also acknowledge that watching any USC game with the audio turned up may result in the viewer adopting the cadence from the tune "Conquest." Eventually, the shell-shocked fan will take each sip of beer on the downbeat.

How do we explain the Super Bowl's TV attraction (XL ranks No. 2 for total number of one-time program viewers behind the final episode of M*A*S*H)? We explain it by reminding you that millions of people still eat at McDonald's.

Anyway, let's take a look at how Super Bowl XL loses any comparison with the Rose Bowl:

Officiating
In the interest of objectivity, I must admit that the officiating in the Rose Bowl was mediocre.

The Super Bowl officiating was far worse. Lousy pretty much defines it, with several calls greatly affecting the outcome of the game. According to league insiders, the pregame coin flip probably should have been referred to the review both.

At one point, the Seahawks were burdened with so many yellow flags that observers believed Steelers fans were pitching their terrible towels all the way down to the field turf.

Level of play
In the Rose Bowl, two remarkable offensive units made life miserable for the defenses. The USC offense, which may have been the best in college football history, moved the ball at will (with the exception of one play) against a stellar Texas defense.

The USC defense had this in common with the Texas offense: Too Young.

The relatively inexperienced Trojans just couldn't tackle Longhorns quarterback Vince Young, although early blitzing may have prevented Vince from reaching his comfort zone.

Despite the poor officiating, the Seahawks sort of deserved to lose. A solid game plan was wrecked when their chatty tight end couldn't catch the ball. Clock management at the end of each half was pathetic. The defense allowed Pittsburgh's Willie Parker to record the longest touchdown run in Super Bowl history. The Seattle secondary took one deadly nap, allowing Hines Ward to get behind it after Steelers receiver Antwaan Randle El took a reverse handoff and cocked his arm to throw.

Parades
Regardless of the glee attending the Steelers' victory parade in Pittsburgh, nothing — aside from the Bimbo March at a Las Vegas prizefight — compares to the Tournament of Roses Parade.

Quarterbacks
After the Rose Bowl, NFL draft experts continued raving about USC's Matt Leinart, while others were wondering if Young had put himself in a position to be the first overall pick.

In Super Bowl XL, a fine effort by Seattle's Matt Hasselbeck was under-shadowed by the performance of Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger. Ben, who looks a bit like actor Will Ferrell, played a bit like Will Ferrell.

We thought 22.6 would be the average high temperature in Motown for Super Bowl week, not Roethlisberger's quarterback rating.

The matchups

Super Bowl XL gave a new meaning to "terrible" towels. (Mark Humphrey / Associated Press)

USC vs. Texas was the most talked about showdown to hit the American sporting landscape since National League pitchers were forced to take on the chemist of Barry Bonds.

Even though the Seahawks roared through the NFC, few people outside the Pacific Northwest knew much about them.

The Steelers attained a national following by reaching Detroit as a wild-card team.

Compelling endings
The USC-Texas war came down to a fourth-and-one play for the Trojans that was stuffed by the Longhorns' defensive front. USC's inability to achieve this first down and hold on to its lead propelled a great deal of postgame second-guessing. Did Trojans coach Pete Carroll blow the national championship by not punting? Would Reggie Bush have provided enough decoy gusto to secure the required yardage?

Here are the compelling questions from the homestretch of Super Bowl XL:

"Hey, Holmgren! Why are you punting when you need two scores?"

"Hey, Holmgren! Why not kick a field goal now and quit wasting time when you still need two scores?"

National anthems
The Rose Bowl was a nice star turn for LeAnn Rimes, I suppose. Honestly, I don't remember much about it, which — in anthem terms — means it was a huge success.

The Super Bowl offered the first Star-Spangled Banner relay team, with Aaron Neville sort of handing off to Aretha Franklin. Let's just say that someone dropped the baton.

Halftimes shows
The only Stone I didn't mind seeing was Joss, but she was limited to the pregame sing-along. Instead, the NFL trotted out Mick and the boys, who may have ruined hi-def TV sales for about a month. Perhaps you didn't mind seeing Jagger in a belly-revealing shirt, but I draw the line at watching a security guard using a hat pin just to confirm that Keith Richards is actually alive.

The Rose Bowl halftime was fine, although the USC band still should be advised that you're really not cool (sunglasses at night) if you have to try that hard.

Back to the Super Bowl: I also was less than thrilled that the halftime stars of a Super Bowl in Motown were European imports. And Stevie Wonder (pregame show) would have had more of an impact if someone had put him in the replay booth.

Another better game
That would be USC-Notre Dame, which was far more interesting than SB XL.

For example, Leinart's touchdown sneak had far more impact (if not legitimacy) than Big Ben's phantom TD.

Notre Dame's green jerseys were a better story than the Steelers' karma-commanding whites.

Ford Field's artificial turf did not measure up to the high grass at Notre Dame Stadium, where Ray Liotta was expected to walk out and grab a bat.

But the best pro-college, anti-Super Bowl argument was provided by Joe Montana, who probably wouldn't skip USC-Notre Dame to watch one of his son's games.

Couldn't agree more.

Stevens did drop a pass wide open at the five I think...streaking towards the end zone...

Ya know, it's unfortunate that the game had so many controversial calls...

But there are some things that are being conveniently overlooked....

As I just said, the refs had nothing to do with the inability to defend the 3rd and 28 play....

The refs had nothing to do with the inability to lay a hand on Willie Parker for 75 yards....

The refs had nothing to do with the kicker missing two field goals....

The refs had nothing to do with all of the dropped passes.... In addition, I didn't see anyone complaining after Stevens CLEARLY fumbled the ball after a good 3 steps on one of his drops...

The refs had nothing to do with Rouen consistently whacking the ball into the endzone, while most of the time Gardocki was pinning them deep in their own zone...

The refs had nothing to do with D-JACK, or whatever the fuck his name is, nonchalantly not making an attempt to get both feet in bounds TWICE....

And most importantly, the refs had nothing to do with the Seahawks being suckered into the EXACT SAME GADGET PLAY that the Steelers ran against the Browns ONLY FOUR WEEKS EARLIER....

So yes, most of the calls went against Seattle, and that makes it unfortunate and that leaves a bad taste in their mouth....

But you have to admit, those things I listed are pretty cut and dry, and need to be looked at objectively....

I need new Av auctually, Any Ideas? Don't want a browns one 'cause the season over. Been a while since i've been able to sit down and type. As a Browns fan my natrual tedency is to root against the steelers in anything, anywhere, anytime, any situation. Same thing With Michigan.

Yo Va...nobody's disputing anything that you said...I agree with it all...

but much like the interception that wasn't in the Indy game...that still has to rate as the worst call in the history of football...

a couple of shit calls can work on a team's psyche...

My point is just that it's unfortunate that in such a BIG game...the focus has turned to the referee's sucking ass...because...well...THEY sucked ass...

For once...the calls went the way I want them to go though...

but as a team...if you aren't ready for bad calls...then you should be playing semi-pro ball in Meadville...

I'm getting a lot of shit from friends this week that Pittsburgh won because of bad calls.

It's fucking bullshit.

The bottom line is that neither team played particularly well. This was easily Ben's worst game in the playoffs. But I also think his thumb had a lot to do with that, and not just plain nervousness.

As for the bad calls, that's exactly right. It wasn't that the calls directly robbed the Seahawks of a victory. It's that the bad calls seemed to partly take the wind out of their sails. I still don't really believe they would have necessarily won the game if it weren't for them.

Taking the whole game into account, meaning everything, Pittsburgh still played the better game.

I wish my friends that were talking smack just to get me worked up a bit actually watched every game Pittsburgh played in the playoffs.

Jesus, look at the Indy game. Pittsburgh kept getting shit on and still fought against hope and won.

The bottom line is they came an inch close to losing against Indy because of the interception that never was...and that's a lot more than any direct robbery the Seahawks can claim.
