Can you try it?
Is that close to you?

Looks like it would do the trick and then some.

It isn't a Plexi, it's a metal face. Plexi's were only made up to 1969, plus this appears to be a two channel amp...which a Plexi isn't. This is probably a circuit board amp, whereas actual Plexis are turret boards...and yes it effects the sound.

Don't worry baby...when I make my millions as a teacher, I will buy you four for your birthday. One for you, me, and our two children who will come along sooner or later.

:)

Thanks Sweetness ! :D

Looking forward to having four of them !!!

So this "Artiste" model is not one of the handwired jobs, BS1.
That kinda answers my question then...

It might be a great amp, I don't know. I know that a 1974 year model Super Lead has a printed circuit board in it. I think they stopped with the hand wired chassis around mid-1973.

One thing I should point out is that while Marshall quit making actual amps with Plexiglass panels in 1969, the circuit was the same on most metal faced Super Leads made in the early 70's. At least this is what I gather from my research. In fact a JCM 800 is essentially the same circuit, but with a control for preamp gain. Their distorted sound is quite different because original Super Leads have no preamp gain, and most of the distortion you hear is power tube distortion. (Power tube is the best PERIOD).

Back in 1978 when I was a serious noob to the world of Marshalls, I was in my very first real rock band.

The leader of the band had a 100W Plexi amp.

All I knew at that time was what Marshalls were SUPPOSED to sound like (nice crunchy distortion, etc.).

I shared a house with this guy and one day I went into the band room and turned that fucker up to 10...and was mystified as to why there was no distortion whatsoever....

That Artiste looks like it is in great shape. I never heard of a model like this until now. I wonder what the purpose of this was, what with the different front panel layout and all...

I love seeing mid-70s heads being sold for large sums of money...it just reassures me that mine is worth a shitload of kash...

I also had never heard of "The Artiste" until I saw this...
Interesting comments (as always) by BS1. To my ear the
JCM800 is the closest of the modern day Marshalls to
sound remotely close to the Plexi's. Thats why I have
bought them, they are easier to get a hold of, thats for
sure !

I too have never heard of that model...rather interested in what it was. I foresee a Google search. LOL

I found this on http://www.drtube.com Doesn't really tell us anything other than production model numbers and years made.

The Artiste amps were in production from 1971 up to 1978. The Artiste speaker cabinets were in production from 1973 to 1977. In the brochures they were called Artists, but the panels on the amps show Artiste.

2040 Artiste, 50W 2x 12" combo
This amp had 2 channels and 4 inputs and a reverb.

2048 Artiste, 50W head
2049 Artiste, 2x12" 60W cabinet
This amp had 2 channels and 4 inputs and a reverb. The schematic is probably the same as (or very similar to) the 2040 Artiste amp.

2068 Artiste, 100W head
2069 Artiste, 4x12" 120W cabinet
2059 Artiste, 100W head and 4x12" cabinet
This amp had 2 channels and 4 inputs and a reverb. The 2069 cabinet was a very tall straight front 4x12" cabinet.

Here's a 1966 JTM 45...think early AC/DC tone, on Ebay. Give you an idea of what you'll pay for a real Plexi, whether it be this or a 100 watter. This one has the original cab with Greenbacks!!

Here's a 1973 Super Lead metal face. Not a bad price, I don't think. It isn't a "plexi" but it's close.
