              I remember hearing about Layne's departure like a couple days after the fact.

              I also remember media saturation regarding the bitch from TLC departing the same week.

              So let me get this straight like I tried to do back then:

              The fucking entertainment/music media focuses all their attention on a talentless, house-burning, instant-gratification-driven, mouthbreathing dipshits' passing.......and Staley's relegated to sidenote status?

              Staley had a one-of-a-kind voice.....arguably top-ten material. His work on the Mad Season deal is incredible.....if you wanna different reference point.

              Sensationalistic media?

              It's gotten worse since then.

                  Layne hadn't done anything publicly - including visiting his family - for a loooong time when he passed. TLC were still commerically huge - unlike Alice, they truly were household names.

                  Besides, this made it easier for his family anyway. In the end, in these matters, that's what counts.

                                  I saw ALICE IN CHAINS open for KISS at TIGER STADIUM in Detroit in 1996...one of the last dates they ever played.

                                  AIC were the most influential band of the 90's...in my book.
