Iggy & the Stooges on stage

I saw Iggy and the Stooges yesterday night in Colmar (Alsace, near Strasbourg), in a 10,000-people (open-air, but roofed) concert hall, and it was really worth it!

There was the annual Wine Festival all around the concert place, hundreds of cool chicks... It was literally overcrowded. I think I'll go back there next year for the Festival, but that's another story.

After Superbus, a French "pop-punk" group, the Stooges came up and played "Loose" in a delirious atmosphere (we were a few yards away from the stage). Iggy sang the first verse, then the chorus, then... he jumped into the audience standing before him! Ha! Ha! One minute and 30 seconds after arriving on stage, the man started slamming...

The show was Iggy's, visually. But the music sounded damn great. The strange bass player they hired 2 years ago really makes it (I realized yesterday how much Dave Alexander's parts were essential to "The Stooges" and (above all) "Fun house"), and the Ashetons, very concentrated, conscienciously delivered the heavy artillery: Scott played his drums like a robot, Ron (who seems to have lost some weight) played his legendary, definitive riffs, in a very impressively calm mood, considering the big, big flood of decibels. What I also found impressive was his ability to keep on playing the same riff for 3 or 4 minutes, while Iggy was like forgetting about his mike, slamming here and there...
Iggy is a huge performer, all right (I'm so glad they eventually got back together), he sure is a special case in rock history; he jumped down on us maybe 30 times during the show, he invited 20 fans on stage during "No fun", he pretended to fuck a chick on top of the bassist's amps, etc. But I was (well, just a little) disappointed with the three recent songs (from "Skull ring") which were the weak moments of the concert, no doubt. And I never heard the low tone in Iggy's voice, the one you hear on "Fun house" (the album) or his solo records. He sounds rather different on stage, more "squeaky".

It seems they will release a new album in a few months; I just hope they'll be more inspired than they were on the four tracks of "Skull ring".
I don't know if they're going to carry on touring - I know they've been for nearly two years - but if you haven't seen Iggy and the Stooges yet and have an opportunity, don't miss them. You won't regret it.

I like to say that the Stooges were the real punks, even the only ones, some 7 years before a bunch of silly brats tried to imitate Ron Asheton's riffs. But that's something else.

Oh! I just forgot: Steven Mackay played the sax during the second half of the concert, from "Fun house" to the end. He played the riffs even on the tracks from the first album, which brought something interesting to the whole stuff. A great concert.

It seems the Iguana is not that popular in the States, but I can be wrong. Anyway, has anybody seen Iggy & the Stooges anywhere on stage these last 2 years? What did you think of their performance then?

Fucking awesome. I'd love to see 'em. One of the best rock bands in history, and very influential. IGGY is my favorite singer, next to DLR, Morrison, Ray Davies and Ronnie Van Zant.

Cheers Rikk, nice to be back after a month away... and CONGRATS!!! You for Mod sounds so logical, but it's really cool to see it's for real now. Good news!
I also saw Nick has become a Mod as well... I've got to congratulate him soon too!

As for the Stooges, there's one regret I have: they don't play any song from "Raw Power", because of the Asheton brothers' refusal. I won't blame them for they've got their reasons for that (Ron was relegated to bass on that album due to James Williamson's arrival on - tremendous - guitar, and Bowie mixed the whole record so that bass and drums could hardly be heard - the biggest crime in the history of recording), but it's really too bad: "Raw Power" is such a fucking masterpiece, now Iggy has remixed it himself!
I just hope they'll play it on their next tour.

I share your admiration with the singers you mention, and I'm glad you included Ray Davies the genious, the Kinks being one of my very faves too, and not that often mentioned.

Thanks JEROME. Yeah, NICK and myself were pretty stoked with the modships...and the SHEEP PEN forum is really a very cool place for Army insanity.

I agree with your comments on RAW POWER. The truth is, I barely consider it the same band. IGGY would end up using WILLIAMSON on guitar throughout the 70s on various projects. RAW POWER has STOOGES feel but with a different guitar-player. I think it's probably better than both STOOGES albums, but it only beats FUNHOUSE by a short margin. It is strange that they haven't played it...but it's time to break out some of those numbers. I NEED SOMEBODY in particular would be an amazing stage number!

I can't believe RAY DAVIES isn't even more lauded than he is. He's an incredible songwriter, performer, etc. THE KINKS wrote more incredible songs, big or not big, than pretty much any band I can think of. It's pretty tragic that they lost their commercial appeal at a certain point...but at least they kept going.

As you annouced it a few weeks ago, the first two albums will be re-released... tomorrow! I'm looking forward to getting them!

I found a few pics that were taken during a festival this summer in France. Iggy definitely does not look human.

And another one: Ron Asheton still wears the same Raybans as 35 years ago.

The strange, but so efficient bass player, Mike Watts, hiding Scott Asheton:
