Hi folks.
I've just returned home from a David Lee Roth concert.
Almost 20 years ago, in 1988, I caught David with Steve Vai and the rest of that stellar band on the Skyscraper tour. David repelled from the top of the colosseum to start off the show. He had the boxing ring, a crazy light show, obscenely loud sound system, a surf board he rode over the audience, and non-stop jumping, kicking swinging and revelry. What an enjoyable and memorable show that was.
Tonights show was very different. His voice isn't quite what it used to be, his stage antics were pretty tame, and it just was not even close to the same.. And I couldn't get over the short brown hair look. Is that really David Lee Roth?
None the less his irreverent spirit is still intact and I think he offended some people in the general county fair audience he was playing to. Points for that.
He did a lot of Van Halen songs... Panama, Jump, Dance the Night Away, and more. I missed the beginning of the show so I'm not sure what was there but I think I heard people saying he did Hot for Teacher to start. Wish I could have caught that. The general consensus from people walking away was that they were horrified by his vocals in the beginning but after he warmed up it was good. It was hard to hear him a lot of the time because the backup singers were so loud. His guitarist.. Well, Eddie Van Halen or Steve Vai he is definitely not.
We were treated to a fabulous microphone stand acrobatic juggling thing at the end which got the audience really riled up.
It was fun to see him and I enjoyed it, and am glad I got to, even if it's a bit surreal in comparison to my last encounter with Diamond Dave back in 1988.
I'd like to see him full time into music again, with Van Halen even. I never really cared for Hagar much in that group, if at all. But, it seems like maybe those guys might have an attitude problem when it comes to their lead men. How can you ever replace David Lee Roth? There's just no one out there like him.
