Yankees, Rivera will agree to 2-year extension

Yankees, Rivera reportedly agree to two-year extension
    March 23, 2004
    SportsLine.com wire reports

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The New York Yankees and relief ace Mariano Rivera have reportedly reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension worth $21 million.

According to The New York Times, the hard-throwing right-hander will be with the team through 2006 and the deal includes an option year for 2007 that will be prompted by games completed.

The announcement is expected to be made Tuesday.

Rivera, who is in the last year of his contract, has four World Series rings and a record 30 career postseason saves -- double the total of the next closest pitcher, Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley.

The 34-year-old All Star is the Yankees' career saves leader with 283. In 64 games last season, Rivera finished 5-2 with a career-low 1.66 ERA and 40 saves.

Despite blowing four of six save chances in late July and early August, Rivera was hot from Sept. 1 through the end of the World Series. He allowed just one earned run in 28 innings and captured the Most Valuable Player award in the American League Championship Series against rival Boston.

That's the whole point. It's out of hand.

Better hope your boys take it this year. Isn't Sammy a free agent after this season?

And yes, even though I have no clue what it has to do with anything, I've been to Yankee Stadium.

Well, seeing you are from Indiana, I figured you were yet another bandwagon "fan." I'll give you credit for at least going to see "your team" in person.

I too have been to Yankee Stadium. It sucked.
