That's when Peralta made a near hysterical cell-phone call to Tina McCarthy, the mother of her daughter's boyfriend. Lauren Brown had fled with the McCarthy family to Memphis, Tenn.
Peralta yelled into the phone that she was in a small boat in the eye of the hurricane and that she could see the storm swirling around them. "I was screaming, 'Call the National Guard; we're going to die! We're going to die!'"
