It would take a 30 year $100 billion construction project to protect New Orleans

A flood control expert from the Netherlands said it would take 30 years and $100 billion to build a state of the art flood control system that would protect New Orleans from Category 5 hurricane tidal surges. The Netherlands has such a system and the time and money is justified because so much of the country is under sea level.

Once we get past all the emotional response of Katrina and start looking at a realistic rebuilding plan, the two choices is spend and shit load or rebuild in an area with questionable leveys and flood walls.

Federal funds will have to be spent and New Orleans is broke. I don't think other people in the rest of the country would be willing to spend that kind of money to save a town the no longer exists. They would be interested in restoring the historical French Quarter and building some new infastructer to protect that.

I think it's safe to say, New Orleans is not going to dissapear but it will be a smaller city. Hopefully a better city.
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!
