In music there are a handful of artist that march to their own drum and can laugh 5 years down the road at how the rest of the bizness caught up with them. They don't listen to critics. They don't listen to fans. They listen to only themselves and proclaim the art for the masses.
Zappa, Prince and Bowie are modern examples of this. To a certain degree I'd have to add David Lee Roth.
