Hello everyone, I just bought a 1997 orville les paul custom, I think it is fantastic, I was just wondering if anybody else has one, or has played one?! As a second guitar it cost me $450 + dilivery from japan, and i love it! I would love some other opinions........

Looks like a decent axe... Never heard of this Orville stuff... what's the story there?

GAR

So he's saying then that Gibson has a Japo line called "Orville", or what?

I'm guessing "jap-market-only" if so because they wouldn't let that in the USA through the proper channels. Guitar Center would carry 'em in a hot second if that were the case.

Give us some more pics, especially of the reverse of the headstock, and the bound cutaway horn and end of fingerboard. And a shot of the controls cavity with plate removed if you would?

yeah, it was only sold in japan in 1988-1999, you can get them for bargains on ebay.... like meee!!! well anyway, some come with usa pickups, and they are very very very good quality, they made them because other japaniese companies were cashing in on their designs, so they made top quality guitars; ONLY for sale in japan. Towards the end, they made them in korea, and then, because worldwide demand was too high, they changed to epiphone japan. The 1988-1992 have a small 'by gibson' on the headstock- these are seen as the best quality!!! but all of them are good (im putting seymour duncans in mine anyway!)

these are the pictures the guy gave me when i was buying it, the only things that irritates me are;

1.noisy pickps
2.smallish frets
3.rosewood fingerboard (some orvilles come with an ebony)
4.not great quality tuners

but seriously.... these are great guitars, i cherish mine, and for $440, its a steal.. EVEYONE GET ONE!!!

I've seen a couple nice Orvilles...

I can't believe Gar has never seen one...

For the same money you could get a brand new Tokai Love Rock Les Paul...

indeed you could elvis, but what would you prefer? i'd prefer an orville, just because its closer to a gibson... and mine fuckin' rocks! for that money, it would have to be a korean tokai, and you would pay more than $440 wouldnt you? so im in the orville camp im afraid!! the sunbursts on orvilles are dodgey sometimes though, id prefer a love rock standard to an orville, but now were on the subject, what about edwards?! looks like a lot of guitar for the money, especially with seymour duncans!

orville as a name brand changed to epiphone for the gibson 's made in japan for the japan market only! u.s. epiphone's have that lame headstock ,while epiphone japan has the regular gibson headstock ,but they are both the same guitar and company!beware the tokai's though ,make sure it's a japan made not the korean tokai's !!!! but i have played both tokai and orville/epiphone's they are pretty decent for a cheaper les paul alternative!!!!!

roryrobson666

epiphone japans are not gibson identicals!!!! for one the headstock is spastic; orvilles are very different!!!

I didn't see anything I like on that edwards site...

I've seen a few mighty nice Korean Tokais...

Put in some real pickups and set it up correctly and I challenge anyone, even Gar, to find something wrong with them...;)

lol gibson japan stopped using the orville name around 1999/2000 and combined both orville + epiphone into one company " epiphone japan" the older models have the original gibby headstock, that pic is prolly a 2004/2005 model which now carries the lame headstock

"Prolly" is not a word...

elvis, my brother bought a korean tokai ,and slapped duncans in that thing and it still sounded "thin" they look really good ,i mean really good but it just didnt play well ,my belief is the wood is shit ,cuz my bro sold it and got a japanese tokai big difference!! 2 lbs heavier for one thing ,sounded great before i even plugged it in,much closer to the real thing !!! i wouldnt mind a gold top tokai ,but im a strat man and i got 2 fender japan strats i'll never part with !!!!!

oh and sorry for the bad spelling !

ELVIS

That particular one must have suffered from a poor selection of wood...

That doesn't mean they're all bad...

Many early vintage Les Pauls were particularly light compared to more modern versions that weigh a ton...

Personal preference plays a big roll in this department...

Some people like a thin tone, myself included...

that i can agree with elvis,it all boils down to personal preference.....

tokais play really nicely, but whenever i play one, it feels like theres something missing.... i dont know what but i just cant get into em. yeah there are a lot of guitars with shitty wood, take a lot of gibsons... the customs from the late 70s and early 80s are god aweful!!!

there are a few with gibbo headstocks, but theyre rare!!! they tend to be of leeser qualit than orvilles apparently!! but towards the end orvilles were being made in korea anyway.... ooh saw a cheap version epiphone recently, it was made in china!!! this cant be good!!! on inspecton, a lot of them were, do you guys think they will have dropped in quality?? i dunno i played one and it sounded hot!!!
