View Full Version : Is there one Van Hagar song that can stand up against a Van HALEN classic ??

I'm really trying objectively to find one, just one song made during the first Sham and the Shirellas era that could come close to being considered a "classic"....

Now I don't mean something like "Big Bad Bill" or "Dancing in the Streets".....

I mean songs like ATBL, Unchained, or YRGM......

That to me is the main issue, the music is far inferior !!! There's just no comparison !!!!

Classic VH is timeless.
I can't think of one song.

Hmm..
Nope.
All of Van Hagar's stuff sucks
This is probably not a good time to ask this question here

every album sold progressively less once Hagar joined.

It doesn't matter how much they sell right off...all those albums got to number 1...which means they sold right out of the gate...

Classic VH didn't have to go #1...they just stood the test of time...and continued to sell...

not that that matters to Hagar...because according to him...he's sold 500 million albums with VH...

Not a chance in the world. I *like* about 4 Van Hagar songs (meaning I think they're good but not great): Summer Nights, the song 5150, A.F.U., Judgment Day.

None of them matches the attitude and the overall feeling of even the lesser Van HALEN songs.

And that's an excellent comparison, because Sting solo is all about "easy listening" ballads. Just like Van Hagar was about sellout love songs. And notice how both bands fell apart when one person decided that selling out was more important than making kick-ass music. Meaning Eddie with his synthesizer foray starting on 1984 and Sting with his wuss ballads starting on Synchronicity (actually with the last two songs on Ghost in the Machine.)

I think there's another comparison that can be made: Aerosmith on drugs versus Aerosmith off drugs. Aerosmith on drugs was really kick-ass, heavy shit. Aerosmith off drugs is sellout ballads and hiring songwriters from Sweden to help out.

The tune FINISH WHAT YA STARTED with DLR on vocals would be an AMAZING track.

Dave's bluesy voice would be KILLER on that track!

Yuk. Anything after 5150 I stopped imagining Dave singing any of those songs. He was suited to sing a few off of 5150, partially because he co wrote and laid down a few tracks prior to "quitting". Summer Nights was one of those songs, and I believe Good Enough was the other. Correct me if Im wrong.

I loved seeing Dave on the sapranos tonight too BTW. Looked and sounded very cool and comfortable. He's got a few more episodes to go too.

I've seen quite a few Roth fanatics claiming that Humans Being is the "only Hagar song that rocks and has great guitar". I disagree completely.

Very boring guitar part. Rudimentary, beginners-first- time chords, played in an extremely uninspired manner. You can almost hear Eddie saying, "Yeah, everybody's played this before, but when I do it, it just sounds so special..."

Yeah too many Johnny Come Lately's" around here eh? Ed stopped playing the electric guitar in 1985 when Sam joined. From 85 on it's all effect pedals and distorion signals to help drown that mono toned Fagar voice. Every tune after dave left has been a radio tune. That says it all. Radio is not rock n roll. Its Commercialized. Thus making Sam Van Halen the Cheese.

I will say this. Best of Both Words is a decent song. Sammie included.

And there's a small handfull of tunes that I like the music to (Fat Sam not included). Like Pleasure Dome - it rocks pretty hard. Sammie doesn't deserve to sing on Judgement Day.

Thats about it from the Hagar catalog.
