View Full Version : Canadian Federal Election?

This is a couple of days old . . .

It's almost certain that the gov't will fall sometime within the next month, as the minority Liberal government wont be able to survive the next vote of confidence now that the New Democrat party has backed out of supporting them.

Personally, I like minority governments. . .it forces those who govern to be accountable for their actions, or else a new election is forced.

The same system would definitely change how things operate in the USA.

Discuss.

I would like to see this government go forward till at least until the spring.

You are right...a minority has to be accountable at all times.
A strong majority breeds arrogance(look what it did to Jean)...too much power is not good.

I gotta say I am not a huge NDP supporter at a federal level...but smiling Jack got a few social initiatives pushed through.

Good call WACF. Jean was so successful at winning majorities that it practically ruined him. Martin is practically ruined just by his association with Jean.

Yet somehow, the Liberals are still leading the polls.

My bet would be for a Conservative minority in the springtime. The Libs have had too much power for too long.

Love him or hate him, you gotta admit he's got a remarkable amount accomplished for the country, even with such a small part in the parliament.

I think the minority government situation proved that the Parliamentary system is superior to that used in the US.

An essentially two-party system in the US is saved only by the existence of the Senate that can occasionally stop House majority from steamrolling a religious-right agenda, for example.

In my eyes, ALL party contributions should be illegal, and the taxpayer should fund equally a modest campaign fund for each party.

The present situation in both countries is insane, particularly in the US, where paying back political contributors is out of control.

Power of states is too much as protectionist measures not in best interest of US economy are pursued by prominent state representatives. Feeble industries not globally competitive are propped up for decades and opportunity cost of lost economic development in other areas can never be recovered.

Canada needs to keep US companies out of our resources. Recently, BC government "paid back" a small party contribution of US company by changing laws to allow foreign ownership of energy company built up by people of the province for decades.
A joke!

Another potentially good topic attempted to be thrown off track by our resident rednecks who have nothing constructive to add . . .

I like the idea of banning contributions to pollitical parties. I'd bet that if the US did that, not one American soldier or marine would be dead in Iraq right now.

At the same time, it's hard to justify giving money to the Bloc party. Give gov't money to a party that wants to split up the country? . . .

Makes no sense to me what so ever?
How can a federal pary be allowed to exist if it's only concern is one province. This is one thing I can not grasp.

I would say I like the US two pary system...If you seperated the Libs, Cons, NDP and Bloc into a left and right we would see a more balanced government.
With our parliment having the freedom to discuss issues and debate like we do, I think we would be more successful at crossing our hurdles.

Bottom line though...I feel that we should have the right to fire our MPs and MLAs when they fail us.

Can't say I agree there. It's the multi-party system that allowed the NDP to have that bit of power in the spring, and again now, and things actually got done. It forces governing parties to make compromises and better reflect the will of the people.

Also, the Libs aren't really a left wing party. NDP/Green definitely, but Libs are pretty much right down the middle. The more parties, the more views that are represented, and the more the parties have to work together to accomplish things. Less one-sided.

WACF
11-11-2005, 01:49 PM
Yes, the Libs are down the middle.

That is where I am comming from...a NDP party member will not go Conservative.
It is my view that the LIbs would move a little farther to the left if the NDP party dissolved.

The reason we get so many Majority governments is because the far left splits the vote. Much like we saw with the Reform party taking votes from the far right.

I should of added that to my post...the Bloc takes a lot of votes from who "Could" govern.
Quebec does determine who wins.

That is where I feel our system has failed...seats should be based on wards or territories verses population. That is where some western alienation is felt.
Everytime the Quebec wheel squeaks the feds dump cash and make concessions...when there are bigger problems to be dealt with it seems like a waste of $$$ and time. parliament sessions are just too short to effectively deal with health, justice or trade issues when you have ass kissing and image protecting taking most of the time.

I sooo totally agree with you about the territories versus the population, it just doesn't jive anymore with reality...

but there is not a lot of choices to choose from when you go voting...

as long as it's going to govern like this (opposition, liberals, minority, majority) unfortunatly we're doomed.

I doubt we'll have another French PM for the next little while. . .Jean was the nail in the casket for that movement. Also, people are sick of nine provinces having to cater to the demands of one. Harper probably wouldn't stand for that shit if he was PM.

I doubt Martin will keep the Lib leadership if they don't take power in the next election. He's interested in the power and prestige of being PM. . .not the Official Opposition leader. Let's not forget he's a multimillionaire business man. . .much richer than Jean, Mulroney, or Trudeau ever were. . . .it's all about the power for Martin.

I just read on the front page of the Chronicle Herald (Halifax paper) that if the Tories win the election, they'll ban corporate sponsorship of pollitical parties, and limit personal sponsorship to one grand. Sound good to me. Ideally anyway, the parties will answer to the voters of Canada, not whomever pays up the most prior to the election.

Mind you, this would be AFTER the election, letting them rake in sponsorship $$ before banning the very practice . . .

It aint political but thought this was pretty funny anyway, I HATE those Canadian Tire ads, I feel like smashing both of them in the head with a tire iron, bought at Canadian Tire of course.....:D

Canadian Tire Couple In Divorce Shocker

Ted and Gloria Pneumatic, the ubiquitous couple featured in those Canadian Tire commercials on the TV every five goddamn minutes, have filed for divorce.

In an exclusive interview, Gloria admitted that she and her husband of 13 years have in fact been separated from one another for several months.

"We wanted to keep this secret because of the possibility of negative implications both for the company and for our careers as a husband-wife pitch duo, but I couldn't continue living a lie," said Gloria, who admitted that she wasn't happy in the relationship for a long time.

"Ted and I were all smiles and chuckles when we were extolling the virtues of the 50 dollar folding recliner or the cheap-ass DVD player for the car that breaks after the first speed bump, but when the cameras stopped rolling, we would just return to the loveless sham that was our marriage," she admitted in a phone interview. "We hadn't made love in our inflatable BYO Bed, complete with Memory Foam, in over a year. All he seemed to care about was his...stuff.

"Oh sure, I'd plaster on a smile and ooze with enthusiasm over the new Mastercraft Electronic Corkscrew, or whatever the hell it was we happened to be schlepping that particular day, but I began to ask myself...isn't there more to life than this?

"I think it was the ad for the Motomaster Automatic Car Door Unlocker that broke the proverbial camel's back. That's when I realized that I didn't love this man anymore.

Mike McChuckle, spokesperson for Canadian Tire and a direct descendant of Sandy McTire, had no knowledge of Ted and Gloria's marital difficulties.
"I mean, why can't you just unlock the goddamn door with your keys?

"Our marriage got to the point where it was built on nothing more than the wanton consumption of crap," she continued. "Instead of devoting more time to the relationship, Ted thought all of our communication problems would go away if he just continued to buy more shit that would just wind up collecting dust in the closet. I mean, the Mastercraft Tap Turner? What was he thinking? Who needs all this shit?"

Gloria admitted that it was she who initiated the divorce proceedings. "Ted's still a little shook up about the whole thing. He's tried to win me back with more...stuff, but he just doesn't get it. Sometimes, I'd just like to grab a Mastercraft XM-70 Megaphone and scream it out to him: 'You can't buy my love with all of this crap! I'm a human being with emotional needs!'"

When reached for comment, Ted Pneumatic sniffled audibly before hanging up his Pulsar Belltone Cordless Phone, available for only $59.99 at your nearest Canadian Tire.

Gloria said that the couple have agreed not to get "the lawyers" involved as of yet. "We're trying to keep things amicable for our son, but we haven't exactly determined who gets what," she indicated. She revealed that she has asked her husband for 1,200 Canadian Tire dollars per month in support, for herself and for little Bocihpus, the couple's child.

Mike McChuckle, a spokesperson for Canadian Tire, said that the company had no knowledge of Ted and Gloria's marital difficulties, but he indicated that the venerable Canadian retailer has no plans of firing the couple. "We look forward to having Ted and Gloria continue to annoy the living shit out of Canadians from coast to coast. After all, it's just TV right? They can act...well, sort of..."

Ted nearly breaks into tears and has to "take five" after doing an extended scene with his ex-wife for the Motomaster Eliminator 600A PowerBox, now only $149 at Canadian Tire.
However, the revelation of the couple's split could have negative repercussions for the Crappy Tire brand, according to Nigel Berconso, marketing professor at the University College of Western Prince Edward Island.

"What does it say to Canadian consumers that this smarmy, eternally upbeat couple with the seemingly perfect life selling them the Motomaster 'Boat in a Suitcase' on the TV are in fact going through an acrimonious divorce? It seems rather hypocritical," said Dr. Berconso, who continues to be stupefied to this day that they give out doctorates for marketing.

"Not only that, but they refuse to say which side they voted for in the 1995 Quebec referendum on sovereignty. That might have something to do with the fact that they have never lived in Quebec, but still...it raises some red flags."

And as for the couple's on-air future? Will they continue working together? Gloria says as far as she's concerned, yes.

"Hey, we're professionals...plus, the gig pays a lot better than dinner theatre in Niagara Falls. It's all about the Dead Prime Ministers, baby."

The NDP has all sorts of great promises that sound convincing, but that's because Jack Layton can say whatever he wants- he knows he doesn't have a chance in hell of getting elected.

The Liberals haven't been liberal in 20 years. All the liberal ideas left w/ Trudeau.

I actually would like to see Martin carry through his full term.

Harper is power hungry and it shows.
With the minority government in place the opposition can get some bills through that need to be done.
We actually have had a decent budget...if Harper cared for the country he would use his position to help the country...not try and take over fully.

Martin actually cleaned out some Liberals that needed to go...they are better for it.

The problem is too many majority governments and Cretien became arrogant. Martin may pay for that.
I say give the guy a full term and prove it to us...if he can not...then we can his ass...after his term.

The NDP will not win...they only take votes, much like the Bloc. Neither of those parties can govern the country and most people know that. I live under the NDP here in Saskatchewan...we reap the rewards in some ways but we stay back in the '40's in others. They are not business friendly when it comes to "new" growth. We have a booming economy and have become a "have" province due to oil...but it does not show.

I am looking forward to the news tonight...see what is new.

Angel is on the money BTW....I have serious issues with the Liberals, but right now they are maybe the lesser of all evils.

This fact is true. Politically, Martin could not oust Chretien loyalists completely from liberal regime right away.

Slowly, through scandal and manuevering, he has done so. Much of the scandal has actually come about due to the fact that Martin forced Chretien to retire before he really wanted to. Chretien is still very influential in Ottawa, and saw fit for certain "facts" to emerge. Some of these have come back to haunt him obviously, and they have hurt Liberals

Not true anymore.

Provincial parties generally have no affliation with federal ones of same name.

You wouldnt know it around here lately, Dalton has ripped a few pages of crap from Martin, for example what the debt really is, one week its 50 billion, the next its 14 billion, the next its 28 billion, nobody has a clue what it really is, oh yeah and then there was Daltons promise of no new taxes (But he wouldnt cut them either), another broken promise, he kicked in the biggest health tax increase in Ontario in over 20 years, sounds to me like he learned a thing or two from the Federal Liberals all right....

I see you have fallen for the "The sky will fall if power is given to the evil conservatives" bullshit the CBC and alot of media outlets try to convince us of.....No offense of course, I just dont buy into the fear mongering.....

Bug, I'm very dissappointed in you, you should know me better than that. Do you think I would base my opinions on media? NOT. I'm more inclined to believe that they have followed MY opinions.

My opinions are based on the fact that a) Mulroney sold us out once before and b) I listen to Stephen Harper talk. My NUMERO UNO concern is keeping my country "Canadian".

If you would prefer that we be like the racist, intolerant, warmongering assholes south of us, then please, be my guest... and move there. Let me know how happy you are when you're freezing in the cold because we won't sell you anything anymore. ;)

(By the way, did you get out and thank some vets on Friday?)

I would say he learned from the Alberta Conservatives.

I'm not by any means an expert on Canadian politics, but if the Liberals (who aren't really Liberal anyway) are having problems, and the Conservatives are Chimp/PNAC sellouts, then why not give the NDP a shot. If you guys have a viable third party, use them. Down here, we're stuck with two. Or more like one and a half as long as the DLC exists.

I guess you could always go with the Quebec separatist party, but they're pretty much a single issue party, right?

The separatist party only has members running in Quebec. What makes you say the liberals aren't really liberal? I could never trust NDP with money. They practically ruined the province of BC. They have wonderful socialistic ideas, but not the $$ to back them up.

:D

And by the way, FORD. Thanks for having the intelligence to know that what goes on up here politically does have an effect on the US. ;)

Did you miss the part where Angel said they had a huge pool of oil?

Of course the BCE is trying to get in there. There are a lot of neocons in the Canadian Conservative party these days, from what I've heard. Including this Harper clown who's probably the Hoser equivalent of Prick Santorum.

Honey, my opinion is based on what I read on these boards, and what your politicians do.

Not only that, but a lot of what we say on here is because we want to spark a "fight"...

Take a look at how many people will go out of their way to put Canada down, because they know I'll respond. It's a bit of fun that we've been having on these boards for a long time now. It really is all in fun, except for the racism thread which I don't find fun at all. In fact, it's deeply disturbing.

I'm not obsessed with the USA, but I am with CANADA... I'll fight to the end to keep my country out of your hands...

The beauty with forums is sometimes you get a real feel for how someone thinks. Especially internationally. I am amazed how some posters can not look beyond their little world around them...perhaps media has alot to do with that.

Like you say Angel...a lot of it is for fun...but sometimes you get a real shot of how someone percieves themselves opposed to others.
It can be very educating, sometimes just plain disturbing.

Time and time again it makes be proud to live where I do, and at times I see where we fall short.

So do I, but I don't bother mentioning them. ;)

(Not true, I've often spoken against what we've done to a once great military, and our shitty immigration and criminal laws).

"Citizen's Panelist" Really Undecided?
I was watching the National last night and was dumbfounded by one member of the "Citizens Panel" (roughly 27:30 minutes in) of "undecided" voters, as she effortlessly mouthed Liberal talking points. I thought it was kind of odd and even Mansbridge seemed a little uncomfortable. I googled the panelist's name and in her bio were these little nuggets:
For nearly two decades, Rikia Saddy has been working to shift consumer and voter perceptions and behaviour.

and

In 1998 Ms. Saddy moved to the Koo Creative Group as Director of Client Services and found her niche developing strategy for entrepreneurial-minded companies looking to leap to the next level. Since 1999, she has been in high demand as a marketing strategist, advising clients as varied as ISMBC (a joint venture of IBM and TELUS), Imasco Minerals, and Popmachine.com as well as provincial and federal elections and leadership campaigns. She also works extensively and pro bono for arts and community organizations such as the Vancouver Opera, YWCA, and Mortal Coil Performance Society. (emphasis mine)
For who's leadership campaign did she work and for which party did she campaign? I realize this may be a coincidence but Paul Martin was on the board of Imasco, was he not? It could be all a dream, but I think the CBC got suckered.
