I like the classic stuff you mention, a lot.
My fave Southern band is The Black Crowes, ah yeah! But it's obvious where their music comes from.

I grew up near Boston, but Southern rock was huge growing up in my hometown. I've seen all those bands in concert. (Didn't get to see the classic Skynyrd lineup, unfortunately.)

My favorite is the Allman Bros. with Skynyrd a close second.

Your list is great, but you left off the Outlaws- those guys could play!:)

Lived in North Carolina for the last 28 years. One band missing from the list that is a glaring ommission is LITTLE FEAT produced by none other than Ted Templeman. Check out Waiting for Columbus for some of the finest rock and roll ever recorded live.

Great band. Too bad they did'nt keep it going.
Actually they're not a southern band. They're out of New Jersey.....

Hughie left Skynyrd earlier this year to do an Outlaws reunion...
I grew up in FLA so Skynyrd was a daily thing. Just like those Southern Rock guys that somehow get categorized as Country unfairly. Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash may be seen as country but they NEVER fit country's format so its only fair they have a home in Southern Rock.
Really love Allman Bros. I like Molly Hatchet and think whatever frog dude is swallowing to get that sound is cool. Nobody else sounds like them. They have great guitarists. "Flirtin With Disaster" is probably the biggest known hit but I've always liked "Bounty Hunter" and "Gator
Country".

Chorus:
There's a gator in the bushes, he's calling my name,
And a saying come on boy, you better make it back home again.
There's many roads I've travelled but they all kind of look the same.
There's a gator in the bushes, Lord, he calling my name.

Charlie Daniels is nutin but So Roc. Even Alabama is So Roc. Love the addition of Elvin Bishop thats awesome that I'm not the only person who dug him.

Can I mention Jackyl?

Molly Hatchet's cover of the Allmans' "Dreams I'll Never See" is pretty fucking good.

Gainesville Florida qualifies as the South.

Not to mention the original name of the band was "Mudcrutch"! It don't get more redneck than that.

And if people couldn't figure that out, the song "Southern Accent" was pretty much a giveaway.

Surpasses the original, in my opinion. Just heard the Hatchet version on the radio this morning.

It's likely that Danny Joe is singing that one with Duane Allman somewhere on the other side.

The irony of it all is that the band that might have influenced both Southern Rock and Country more than anyone (in the 60's at least) was from Lodi California......

Damn, I love CCR but it never occured to me to mention them as southern rock. Their sound is definately collared greens and corn bread.

The fate of that band and how the rest of the band betrayed John Fogerty is just disgusting. His own brother was in on it. Very sad end to a great band. I don't find it funny that he could be sued for copywriting one of his own songs. Fucking record companies business practice is unbelievable. I only know one other artist that was just as victimized by a contract that robs them of their own music is Ronnie Spectre.
