I wanted to share this bit from the Beat It solo where Ed uses the massive reach from the 12 fret to the 19th. Once you get the picking part under your fingers then practice accenting the note on the 17th fret B string.

e---------------12-19-15-12-----12-----------------------------------------
b----12-15-19----------------19-----19-15-12-15-17-19-15-12-15-17-19-15-12

The mistake I made when first trying to understand these kinds of licks was I used to play the F# on the 14th fret, e string instead of the 17th fret on the b.
Then I saw ice cream man live (same principle for these wide stretch licks), and he was just fretting the 12, 16, and 19th frets. It allows more momentum.

Makes for a cool exercise for picking and strength of the third and fourth fingers.
Enjoy

Thanks. I'll give it a try. Does it help if I drink a bottle of Smoking Loon first? Eh. I'll just stick to Guinness or Sierra Nevada.

Well technically if it was '82, you might try Schlitz Malt Liquor. :)

Just make sure you're warmed up first. It's a good technique builder, especially when you add accenting the 3rd note on the B.
