If you had a good amp, you wouldn't need a distortion pedal! ;)

I would suggest getting either one of the following distortion pedals to achieve that Metallica/Slayer sound.
Boss MT-2 Metal Zone
Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion with Remote Turbo
DigiTech XMM Metal Master Heavy Metal Distortion Pedal
If you use a Tube Amp try using an Ibanez Tube Screamer for your leads.

Nothing beats good tube distortion.

Nah...
I'm not a fan of distortion pedals and I don't know what ones sound good, but I'm sure there are several that will achieve his goal...

Turn up the drive, turn down your mids and full blast the treble and bass. Maybe a touch of reverb if equiped. Other than that buy a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone. With that pedal you can really control your highs and lows as well as turning up the distortion.

Hmmmm...maybe...I always found that distortion pedals kinda fell short of the sound of a good amp kickin'......
maybe one of those "new" modeling pedals..........................
I mean my RAT pedal was good.....just wasn't quite the "real" thing..........

I had a Rat pedal years ago that was nice, but I never liked distorted guitar, I just used it for a little overdrive...
I have heard that the Metal Zone pedal is good...

The only pedal I ever got anything out of in terms of creating distortion was an old Ibanez Tube Screamer.

I have a DS1 Boss Distortion pedal. Very Cheap. Got mine for 29.99... The distortion you get out of it is a little rough, but if you really know your amp and guitar tone settings, along with the tones on your pedal, you can acheive a nice sound. But if you dont know what the hell you're doing or dont know how to control tone yet, dont buy it.

I prefer a good over drive pedal to flat out distortion, it's not so noisy in the mix.
But in my rig I don't use any of that, it's all tube screaming, baby.
All i add is chorus, flange, phase, shit like that.

Distortion? Dime the amp and stand back. If it isn't dimed, it isn't shit. :D
