    The riff in La Grange

I was listening to the blues channel on Sirius Radio and I came across a song called "Shake Your Hips" by Robert Randolph and his family band which had virtually the same riff. I was shocked because I didn't expect ZZ Top would steal one of their riffs.

Later I also heard a song called "Bare Back Ride" by someone I can't remember that had a similar riff.

Anyway, whats the story behind the main riff in this song?

ZZ TOP lifted it from John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chilen' "

And a court agreed with the Hook

Basically, John Lee Hooker surely was at the origin of that riff. He kind of played it on a few songs as soon as the 50s. Listen to "Boogie chillun", for example... Very close, isn't it?

          Exactly, exactly

And Hooker said it was a Riff his Step-Dad had showed him when he was a youngster.......

A very old, primal Delta Blues Riff.......

It's been used be many people over the years....like all blues Riffs

When that song came out on the radio, I thought Billy Gibbons was a black man.

So the day I was to see ZZ Top for the first time, I snuck into the venue and sat there and watched sound check.

I thought the three guys playing "It's Only Love" were roadies (there was no MTV, cable TV where I lived, or Internet in 1976) as I had never seen a photo of the band, and did not know Billy was white.

Imagine my surprise when after the set change, the lights went down, and out comes those three white guys in rhinestone Nudie suits and cowboy hats!

Man, they tore my face off.

That was the single event that caused me to buy my first electric guitar.

Great post, MW. Onliest thing Ize would add is that you could even trace that ol', primal Delta Blues Riff back to Africa...

Do you remember when we were in Africa??????
