QUEENSRŸCHE returned to the studio this summer to record the long-anticipated sequel to 1988's acclaimed concept album "Operation: Mindcrime". Praised by critics and certified platinum, the original remained on Billboard's album chart for more than a year and its dynamic music and powerful message still resonate today. Rhino Records helps unravel the mysteries of the original with "Operation: Mindcrime II". The album is available March 14 at regular physical and digital retail outlets and at www.rhino.com for a suggested retail price of $18.98.

"Operation: Mindcrime II" contains a 15-song story and is performed by the Seattle-based quintet $B!=(B singer and chief songwriter Geoff Tate; guitarists Michael Wilton and Mike Stone; bassist Eddie Jackson, and drummer Scott Rockenfield.

Tate says the current political and social climate inspired him to revisit the storyline. "I left the original open-ended with the intent to come back with a sequel to finish the story up," he says. "Considering where we are today and how little things have changed, it was too ironic not to continue the story."

"Operation: Mindcrime"'s intriguing and complex plot revolves around Dr. X, a political puppet master who brainwashes Nikki, the story's main character, to assassinate corrupt public figures. The story also includes Nikki's lover, Sister Mary. A former teenage prostitute who becomes a nun, Sister Mary is murdered mysteriously, leaving the cliffhanger "Who Killed Sister Mary?"

Set 20 years after the original, "Operation: Mindcrime II" explores Nikki's fate after being released from prison and reveals the identity of Mary's killer. "I tried to put myself in Nikki's shoes and imagine what it would be like for him to come back to society after spending 20 years in jail stewing about what happened to him," Tate says. "I became fascinated with the concept of revenge and what that would do to a person like Nikki. The story is ultimately about how Nikki wrestles with his conflicted emotions. On one side, his base instincts are pushing him to kill those who wronged him. On the other side, his conscience–represented by the spirit of Sister Mary $B!=(B urges him to learn from his past mistakes and find salvation."

Earlier this year QUEENSRŸCHE launched a sold-out tour featuring the original "Operation: Mindcrime" performed in its entirety with actors on stage portraying the characters alongside the band. Tate says the band plans to launch a tour in 2006 that will feature a stage performance of both "Mindcrime"s in their entirety. "The actors on stage with us add a new dimension to the music," he says. "It's different than your typical rock show, but the audiences really got into the 'Mindcrime I' tour. It's exciting to have the opportunity to combine both albums into one show. It's going to be epic."

Since its formation in 1981 near Seattle, QUEENSRŸCHE has released nine studio albums. "Empire", the 1990 follow-up to "Operation: Mindcrime", sold more than two million copies thanks in part to the enormous success of the hit "Silent Lucidity". Released in 1994, "Promised Land" was certified platinum and featured the hits "I Am I" and "Bridge".

Well.....I still like Operation Mindcrime......that's all
Empire is too lame for today's standards.(I mean...my standards)

I like older Queensryche. They did a song from Mindcrime II when I saw them open for Judas Priest. Could be good.

But let's not kid ourselves, the only reason for this album is to save their dying careers.

I really like Queensryche.

I even like their recent albums although not many other fans do, although I do admit that "Q2K" really sucked.

I`ve got a boot DVD of both their shows at the Electric factory in Philedelphia on their last tour.

It features "Mindcrime" with the actors and it does add an extra dimension to an already fantastic body of work.

I do find it strange to hear Tate talking about how he had always planned a sequel when he has stated since 1990 that they would never make a follow up.

However, you can`t knock a band for giving the fans what they want, right EVH?

They kicked ass in September at the Ryman Auditorium!

Cool....now if they'd just get Chris Degarmo back...Mike Stone's weak sauce (gotta admit I lost interest after 'Empire' as well...)!

Chris is apparently too busy being a pilot in the Northwest somewhere....

Whatever floats your boat, I guess...didn't Steve Morse go on one of those 'Aviator' trips for a couple of years too? Last I heard he (Degarmo) was doing that and playing Rhythm for Jerry Cantrell occasionally....

But I may be confused here...Mike Stone is not the original guy that replaced him, is he? I think THAT was the guy I saw them with last, a couple of years ago. Whoever that guy was licked balls! :p

Steve Morse used to be a commercial airline pilot! i wouldn't be surprised if he does a lot of flying these days too..

Mike Stone is fairly new to Queensryche, i think. Kelly Gray replaced Degarmo - i just wish they'd get Degarmo back...

I had hoped that De Garmo would have been back before this last roll of the dice.

I don't listen to anything after Empire as well.

The problem with the coming tour is that if they try and combine the two Mindcrimes into one big show it's almost certain to start brilliantly and then fade away to an anticlimax.

I'll probably still go though...

Yeah I think so.

Saw them a couple of years ago and his voice was good.

Half the band had shaved heads though including him which was a bit of a shock.:)

For all those wishing to get Chris DeGarmo back, listen to Hear in the Now Frontier. That poppier sound is where he wanted to take the band. Listen to his work after QR too, and you may change your minds.

Yeah, Kelly Gray.

He DID lick balls.

No offence to the guy but he wasn`t up to the job.

The songs were too technical for his more bluesy style.

Check out "Live evolution", Michael Wilton nails all of his parts while Gray sounds totally out of his depth.

Mike Stone is a lot better.

He pulls off all of DeGarmo`s licks easily.

Whether he can write like him is a different matter.

The original guy was just one of their pals who hadn't even played his guitar in about 10 years before being offered the gig.

Mike Stone is pretty damned good.

He is certainly up to the task.
