One of the best songs ever, IMO.

I think Secrets is one of Dave best offerings vocally, maybe it the song and my relation to it.
I think the album is very good, sorry for saying. No it doesn't compare to the other 5 but it isn't crap, that much is true.

I don't know why so many people slam on that record? Pisses me off!!!

Fuck, that thing is awesome from start to finish. "Where Have All The Good Times Gone?," "Hang 'Em High," "Secrets," "Little Guitars," "Big Bad Bill," "The Full Bug" are all fucking STELLAR!!!

A lot of people seem to forget that when the record came out Van Halen were considered "Heavy Metal" cos this was pre-Metallica and that stuff. Fuckin' DD was epic and innovative cos they played so many different styles of music.

Answer me this, what other band of that era could not only have played a song like "Big Bad Bill" but who also could have gotten away with doing it?

Also, "The Full Bug" has Dave playin' harp on it. Nuff Said sho nuff...

Well put, not to mention Jan Van Halen on the flute...pure classic. I for one think there should be less slam on this album. IMO, II wasn't all that it should of been. Lastly, how many times have you heard "Happy Trails" at bar closes, hell that was always my cue to pick up the left over fat hoe for the Friday Night drilling.

The thing was rushed out, recorded in under two-weeks under enormous pressure after the FAIR WARNING tour. The "one-off" cover single "Pretty Woman" did unexpectedly well. So they were goaded into going back into the studio instead of taking a much needed break, were really sick of each other at this point, made some great summer tunes...

Then eventually broke up....

It's a grate summertime record, and I like it. Weakest? That's like cuntparing a Tomahawk rocket to a Bunkerbuster bomb!

On a side note, did you know that the "Hang 'Em High" song is about Jimmy going on a beer run? In the middle of the night?

Don't applaud, throw nekkid women.

Diver Down ended up being a good album. When VH does a cover song and puts their touch on it, good things happen.
I liked all the covers they did during the CVH years.

Excellent point and that's yet another thing that fuckin' makes me wanna puke when the sisters cry about the record and how "Dave did this" WAAAAAAA!!!

Here Dave chooses to do "Big Bad Bill" then he asks Ed, "Hey, could we get your old man to play on it?" Ed agrees and at the time of the release, Ed said how special it was playing in the same room with his father while recording the track. Yet, his pettiness with Dave goes so deep that whenever "Diver Down" is brought up, he NEVER fucking mentions how awesome it was having his father on one of the albums. Never fucking mentions it...

Fuck, Dave names the band "Van Halen" AND puts their own father on a track and all they do is cry and piss on the legacy.

No good, crying pussys. lol

Elvis is right too cos I'd take DD over 1984 ANYDAY. Much more fun of an album.

Also, I never much cared for "Dancing in the Streets." However, now that I've gotten older, I've learned to appreciate and even respect them for covering the fuckin' song. Heck, IT'S FUCKING VAN HALEN!!! Nuff said...

But Nick,

That's what was so great about the first five VH records. They were all recorded in minimal amounts of time, like Zeppelin's early efforts. Sometimes less 'tis better.

Edward always refers to "1984" as the start of the "New" Van Halen and we all know how that ended up. :uck: :sleepy: Fuckin' meloncholy and lazy music sugared with grew up way too close to mommy lyrics.

Oh well, what could have been... :(

"Secrets" and "Little Guitars" are two of Van Halen's greatest tunes. Though the album isn't as good as other Dave-era albums.

And "Hot for Teacher" is my alltime favorite, so 1984 canīt be worse!

Total time 31:29... The 6 albums are all too short.

I've just inserted it in my CD player: "Where have all the good times gone!"
To me, the only track that can be questionable on Diver Down is "Dancing in the Street", but even that track is greatly saved by the incredible sounds Eddie produces.
At least, and by far, it is CVH's most VARIED album; in retrospect, there's no reason to consider it less good than the rest, after all.

CVH's first four albums were just phenominal.

Diver Down and 1984 had certain tracks that were just as phenominal, but some of the cuts on those albums just don't really resonate with me as much anymore. Tend to think of them as skipworthy when listening to the CDs.

Where Have All The Good Times Gone - Doesn't really do much for me anymore. Never really did when I think of it. Back in the days of vinyl, the needle usually went right past this one to the next track.

Hang 'Em High - Right up there with the best of what CVH has to offer.

Cathedral - Nice little solo spot by Ed. Tend to think of this as the intro to the next song.

Secrets - Great track. See, this is Van Halen doing a softer style of rock, but it isn't power pop ballady like Van Hagar. The lyrics capture a certain sentimentality without resorting to "Moon-June" Hallmark style rhymes.

Intruder - Bah. Useful for what it was (intro music to a music video). Ed scraping a beer can across his strings hasn't really aged well. Guess it has it's place considering the time period, but nothing essential.

Pretty Woman - liked this cover. It's appropriately Van Halenized, although if Dave never essayed this one live again I wouldn't be bummed or anything.

Dancing In The Streets - I'll say this much for CVH: if you're gonna do a cover, you may as well add your own stamp to it. There's no mistaking this for Martha and the Vandellas. Whenever CVH did cover tunes, you knew the difference and they injected their own style into it. Was never a case of them doing covers and me thinking that it was such a slavish copy of the original that why even bother. All the same, don't really listen to this one much anymore.

Little Guitars(Intro) - Took me forever to finally get this one down, as to how he did it. Great work by Eddie V.

Little Guitars - Again, right up there with the best of what CVH ever did.

Big Bad Bill - Know what? I like this track. Totally agree that Ed just comes off like a dick when he says he hates this album, yet it was Dave's idea to do the track and get Ed's father to play on it. Shows another facet to CVH. Anyone who thinks CVH were a one-dimensional band needs to listen to this track, along with Secrets, Could This Be Magic and Push Comes To Shove. After Dave left, Van Halen were reduced to power ballads and cumbersome hard rock tunes (unless anyone thinks Finish What You Started was some great ode to country music because Ed wore a cowboy hat during the video).

Full Bug - This track always gets me right between the eyes. Totally dig the lyrics.

Happy Trails - Kinda works better live, but guess it's as good as anything to end the record.

So, out of 12 tracks on this record, there's about four that I don't have too much use for. Not a bad ratio, and this was CVH admittedly rushing out an album because WB wanted something to capitalize on the Pretty Woman single. Think the band is pissed now in retrospect because it seems like Dave and Ted had the most influence on what ended up on the record...yet I didn't see too many frowns on the bands faces on the boots of Largo 1982, South America 1983 and the US Fest 1983 when they were playing the tunes off this album...and that even includes the dreaded (according to Ed) Dancing In The Streets.

Music today is as sad as it can get. You have these one hit wonders make one song that makes it to the airwaves and automatcally:

A star is born

Absolute bullshit. You look back at the REAL musicians: Hendrix, lennon,Janis, Stevie Ray...ect...these were musicians
that struggled to get on top...struggled! Today It's a big joke.
There is no imagination...no real style...nothing to look up to..rock has become a nightmare. Especially when Ashley Simpson is in that catagory. Joan Jett And Lita Ford must be pissed...

Its funny...I remember when the big "Diver Down Debate" came up last time and some clown trashed it and all his beat neck wannabees followed suit. I sat back and thought about putting my 2 cents in favoring the album, but thought better than that because I didn't want to get trashed myself. Where are these clowns now?
I forgot about "little guitars", that song is in my top 5 along with sinners swing, women in love(nothing like a good lesbian song), secrets and i'm the one.
The album kicks ass it obviously draws a lot of attention and that right there should tell you something.
The next time some one starts baggin' on the Diver Down album people, don't be afraid to speak your mind and Hang 'em High!!

Don't forget that dave plays the harmonica on this baby too...Full bug I believe, dammit...Its Diver Down Day, wheres that damn cd.

I always kinda liked Diver Down, What's wrong with it? When I heard them play some of that shit at the US Festival it was fuckin great!
and by the way on the 84 tour they played Pretty woman, and Little Guitars, Eddie also played Cathedral as part of his solo. The band and the audience seemed to be having a great time. What the fuck is Eddies problem with those songs?
