    NOMAR ACCEPTS DODGER OFFER

    By GEORGE KING
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

December 18, 2005 -- A phone call from Joe Torre and a chance to re-ignite a career in New York wasn't enough to entice Nomar Garciaparra to join the Yankees.
Last night, the 32-year-old infielder agreed in principle to a one-year deal with the Dodgers worth $6 million in base salary to play first base in L.A. According to a plate-appearance incentive, Garciaparra could earn more than $8 million next year. He made $8.25 million last year for the Cubs when he played in only 62 games due to a severe left-groin injury.

According to sources, agent Arn Tellem informed the Yankees, Astros and Indians last night that Garciaparra wasn't going to be joining them.

Torre called Garciaparra last week to make sure Garciaparra knew the Yankees were interested.

However, Garciaparra had concerns about the New York media after an up-and-down relationship with the Boston media.

Garciaparra's decision to play for L.A., where he has a home and will be reunited with former Red Sox manager Grady Little and ex-Bosox third baseman Bill Mueller, is a blow to the Yankees. They believed he was a good fit to their lineup since they would have played him at first base and moved Jason Giambi to DH.

As for free-agent outfielder Johnny Damon, the Yankees are in a wait-and-see mode with the Red Sox.

It's believed each club has no problem going to four years for between $11-12 million for the 32-year-old Damon, but agent Scott Boras hasn't come off his seven-year contract search.

The Angels, Orioles and Dodgers are interested but not as much as the Yankees and Red Sox. Asked if the Yankees had requested a meeting with Damon, Boras said, "No, but it's not like they don't know Johnny."

The Yankees remain interested in right-handed reliever Julian Tavarez, another Boras client, but figure Tavarez' request for a four-year deal around $20 million is excessive. Before they got heavily involved with Garciaparra, the Yankees talked to free-agent infielder Miguel Cairo, but there is nothing new on that front. Cairo has other offers from teams where he can expect more playing time than the Yankees can offer.

Yes but he gets to play in the nicest stadium for 81 games.

Who cares he's gonna be hurt in 20 games anyway, why would you want him?

6 million clams is pretty good for him, considering what the "experts" had been predicting...

But yeah, signing with anybody but the Yankees is a good thing....

          Nomar is washed up.
          He's also a curse.
The Sox won right after they traded him.

I remember having a minor argument with a friend of mine after Nomar was traded. I was OK with the deal and he went on about how the Sox screwed up again.

Then again, this friend of mine was also pissed about the Patriots getting rid of Bledsoe.... after they won the Super Bowl without him.
