Charges against Gary Glitter, who was arrested in Vietnam on November 19th for child molestation, have been dropped.
Two weeks ago, according to Glitter's lawyer, the former glam rocker paid the families of the two Vietnamese girls he was accused of abusing $2,000 each for their "cooperation." Since then, both families have gone to the local authorities and requested that the charges be dropped.
This change in events may not, however, prevent Glitter's case from going to court, but his attorney predicts a reduced sentence as a result of the improvised settlement. "If we pay the money for the two families, when this case goes to court, maybe Mr. Gary will receive a lighter penalty," his attorney Le Thanh Kinh told the Associated Press.
Glitter, born Paul Francis Gadd, has been living in Vung Tau, a beach resort in Ho Chi Minh, since March and had applied for permanent residence in Vietnam before attempting to flee his home on November 12th.
The singer, who scored his biggest U.S. hit in 1972 with "Rock and Roll Part 2," was found guilty in the United Kingdom in 1999 of possessing child pornography and served two months of a four-month sentence in jail. He later moved to Cambodia, where he was blacklisted in 2002. Cambodian officials did not specify the charges.
