Dave's talking about his high school girlfriend, R-Lene, who's family still owns a family-owned mexican restaurant here in Pasadena. It's close to where I live and the family (I've only met R-Lene's brother) is a very warm latin family.

When I spoke to R-Lene's bro, I mentioned DLR and he said that DLR comes in the restaurant whenever he's in town. They let DLR use the restaurant for his family when his Dad (Dr. Nathan) passed away about 2 yrs. ago.

A little trivia:
This restaurant is Paul McCartney's favorite Mexican Restaurant according to a recent concert he did here in LA and he mentioned it during the concert.

click this link - or copy it into your browser if it doesn't work. Then when the page comes up, click "Live" at the menu at the top of the page. You should then get another page that says "click here to launch the player"....that's what you want to click on to hear the stream. You may have to turn off or adjust your firewall or pop-up blocker - that may be the problem. good luck - Dave is ON today!

I get up at 5:30 - get a shower, turn the radio on before 6:00 - listen while I get ready for work - run out to my car during a commercial break - love my commute now - don't get out of my car till the run a commercial and listen while at work.

So, his style is definitely unique. i'm sure everyone would agree to that, but what about longevity. Do you think Dave's got what it takes to make it as a radio personality?
I'm having mixed feelings at the moment. It's like, I really love Dave so I put him on a pedestal when he's speaking on air. I'm careful to listen to his words and retorts, and try my damndest to agree with them, but I'm afraid the general public might not be as forgiving or optimistic.
I do enjoy his digs at E and A VH, and how he put's some of his lyrics in his everyday lingo - "lead with your face clown" or "always another train pullin in to that station".

What is his defining factor which will make him popular on air?
Yeah, there's Dave fans out there listening, but what else can Dave do to convert the Stern audience and take the rest of the world by storm?

Personally, I think he needs to have a little more uniform for the show. Topics are brought up on air and callers discuss them, but I think after a topic is dead, it needs to remain closed. It makes it difficult for people just tuning in to figure out what they're talking about when a caller revisits a topic from an hour ago without a lead in or explanation. I noticed that a few times today on Tractors and Gun Education topics.

Also, I think he needs more humorous topics... not just the usual talk radio. Dave's a funny guy - just need to figure out how to get everyone else attuned to his sense of humor. (took me a while).
He should also be a little less politically correct.
A lot of 80's comments a references to being stuck in 1986 too.

I think his co-hosts need to step up and be there ready to back him up better too. He seems to ask them questions and there's a second or two of dead air before someone responds.

By the way, a lot of dreamers out there still expecting a VH reunion with Dave. With so many snide comments towards Eddie and Al, it's going to remain only a dream.

So, thoughts? It's ok to disagree with me too. I'm a Dave fan through and through so hopefully no one will take my opinions too offensive.
I know the show is brand new. It's going to take some time for him to get into his groove.

OK, First.. wake up? I was up and listenin to the show early this morning.

Second, I don't remember him saying he doesn't want the Stern audience, and I bet he would love to get the ratings of the Stern audience. Still, I don't mean to be taken so literally that he should convert them. I am talking about mass appeal to the world though.

I'm not comparing him to Stern and I'm not ripping him apart. Just discussion...

Dave SAID on Howard Stern October 25 he's going for the Rush Limbaugh audience.

Stern listeners are brainless and don't understand Dave anyway......I think Dave deomonstrated this on Day 1 when he hung up on the woman who just got out of the shower.

He doesn't need Stern's listeners in anyw ay; in fact he's better off without those idiots.

I agree with this. No offense to those who love "How-waaahd", but that really is middle school bathroom humor. When Dave was on Stern, he never knew what DLR was talking about! So what if Dave doesn't convert the knuckledraggers? I'm more than happy to watch the Archie Bunkers march off to Sirius. If you don't get Dave then you just don't get out much.

How many times can you hear "come on, take off your shirt"??

Rick...

I do not take offense to your honest critiques and think you raise some good points - I do not agree with everything you said but I am certainly not going to beat you up for sharing a thoughtful, educated opinion that is different from mine.

I think his niche is going to be this tongue and cheek current-affairs call in motif: high-brow humor that may go over the heads of the "knuckledraggers" coupled with intelligent discourse about current events. There won't be a lot of dick and fart jokes. IMO, the last two shows have struck a proper balance between intellectual humor and a more cerebral debate than you would hear on Stern's show yet not to the point of approaching a more "political" talk show style.

I find the sidekicks, particularly Animal, extremely funny and I did not notice the silence that you mentioned when they are addressed by Dave. Yet perhaps Dave thinks so fast that it takes them a second to respond. Still and all, this is a minor technical issue and I am sure as everybody in the studio becomes more relaxed the show will flow even smoother.

As far as closing topics when they are dead....I didn't even consider this because I have been listening to the entire show and you may be right about that. Yet I have noticed many call in talk show programs do this. Callers want to bring up a point about something that was said earlier and there should be some spontaneity to talk radio yet not to the point that the general audience is confused. In retrospect I do not think the show crossed this line. Most people probably understand that when they tune into a talk show that is already in progress, they are going to have to do some catching up to understand all the references.

I do not think anyone is counting on Dave to convert the Stern audience. Like Dave said - anyone that tries to replace Stern will probably only succeed at it about 20%. CBS has already kissed a large portion of this audience good-bye and I think his initial ratings will be solid enough for the suits and the accountants to buy him more time to improve and invent his own market.

Like you said - it is going to take him some time to get his groove. But he is already definitely starting to feel the grove, especially in comparison to the first show, which was a bit choppy. It is similarly going to take some time for a wide audience to feel the groove but based on what I have heard (and I am no radio analyst) he is well on his way.

the good hour of it that I heard today really sounded like he was wheelin' and dealin'.

The guy is FAST.

He had a couple of great lead outs to commercials that you couldn't have asked for anything better.

Of course, every call he took I kept waiting for the 'ba ba booey" to drop.

Even if I wasn't a DLR fan, I would still listen. It's 400 times better than listening to regular DJs talk about their lack of a sex life

Guess I'll just keep listening...
... wow, i've made enough posts to get to "Groupie" status. No longer a Cocktard... amen!

I am really digging this show...it's like a big thank you to all of the die hard fans out there. If you're a Dave fan, you just can't not like this show. It's looking like 2006 is off to a wonderful start. 5 days a week of listening to a bonafide legend/adventurer/rock icon and a booming stock market! All I need now is a cup of coffee and a blowjob!

The man has hit his stride today. The input of Animal and Robin ( who are they?) are extremely welcome additions. Wonder how this plays with the guy behind the wheel?

Animal is Dave's bodyguard and Robin is Stern's old sidekick.

Man, this show is pretty good.

It's worth clearing 4 hours off my daily schedule to listen to the archived show each evening, unfortunately my girlfriend doesn't yet see what the big deal is.

Yep, I'm going to miss her. ;)

I'm assuming it was Robin Quivers, just as you said it sounded like her.

Too bad Dave doesn't give proper introductions of the people in the studio.

The show is getting better and better and so quickly. The improvement since day one is amazing. I attribute that to Dave's intelligence. I think we all know that Dave has a high IQ. Your IQ is basically is your ability to learn. Dave shows over and over again how quickly he learns new things and how quickly he is able to apply them.

I also love his discipline with the trolls. He doesn't miss a beat

Hey, I heard the PLUG for the army this morning! Great stuff!!!

I think it's coming along. He's finding his feet. I hope it continues to progress into a real show.
I've been surfing the web about the DLR on the radio topic. There's a lot of haters out there. Not hating him because of the Van Halen split (though there are many out there), but now because he's taken the Stern slot on the radio.
Sceptics give him no more than 3 months.
Others are comparing him to Conan when he started getting into late night tv. Guess Conan found his feet, and his audience found him...
