Yup. I have a Howard Stern show on MP3 when Dave was a guest, celebrating the release of 'Crazy From The Heat' released on CD for the first time.

Howard point blank asks Dave why he left VH.

Dave's response was that he had no choice. Ed was doing more and more drugs, and as a result, it began to influence the music and guitar riffs that he'd usually present to Dave. Dave suggested that he'd go overseas for awhile, then they'd try again when he came back.
When Dave came back, Ed was still drinking and getting high, with the same musical output. Dave didn't give up, said he'd put out an EP of 4 songs and a few videos, then they'd reconvene. When they did reconvene, Dave saw that Ed was still in the same state, still offering the same 'unacceptable' guitar riffs/music, and that's when Dave said he was leaving.

Dave also said he had no clue why Ed and Al would say that it was because of a 'movie career'. Dave continued by saying to the tune of 'you'd have to be crazy to leave a band like Van Halen for a movie, especially during that period of our careers'. It wasn't, it was the drugs, the alcohol and the resulting offering of music.

Dave also went on to say that he offered to reconvene yet again if/when Ed ever got this shit together, but instead they hired Sammy, who in turn had no problems accepting Ed's substance abuse and new style of music.

Howard asked Dave if the rumours were true about him hating keyboards as an answer to why he broke off with VH. Dave repeated his answer that it was about drugs and alcohol, not keyboards; and as a matter of fact, he's always used keyboards on solo records, and mentioned 'Ice Cream Man' as an example of his musical diversity as early as VH's 1st album.

Look, one of the coolest things you'll find out about David Lee Roth...The MAN is that he WALKS THE TALK. He doesn't deny, contradict or place himself above experiencing any of the subject matters discussed, such as the Methamphetamine topic this morning. He's made the mistakes and he was basically saying that Eddie has too and in return, they as a band did lose alot of revenue that could have been made, but he didn't put the complete blame on Ed alone - he included himself in the reference.

DLR is a pretty humble guy, considering his legendary status and is deliberately upfront, open and honest to the core.....

What DLR is NOT: A Contradiction.

Evene Sammy said something to the effect of Dave was trying to party every night like he was 27 years old...

And if you look at the photos, Dave was super thin towards the end of the tour...

Look at Dave on the Carson Daily show from that time...

He was wigged out on some kind of speed for shure, and he said something like I'm runnin, but not for office...

I'm an old drug expert. I think Dave was doing the hell out of Meth at that time, but I also believe that Dave has the ability to put it down just as fast as he picked it up, which is probably exactly what he did...

Respectfully, I downloaded Dave on Carson Dailey from Unchainme's post around x-mas time and Dave and the band were awesome! His voice was great - the band was tighter than VH ever was and Dave seemed extremely healthy - I doubt a meth head could do that 360 kick jump!

Ed looked in pretty good shape last tour his body looked trim yeah he looks a lil older Surprised he don't look worse the way he drinks.As far as the teeth thing he's always had that going on .And last his clothes yeah for some reason he think's the RAGPICKER look is in with holes in his shoes and all that.But that does not mean he does METH!!!

Well....like I said - your opinion is valid. I never said I do not love CVH but when I saw them in concert - and on most of the boots that I have - they are pretty sloppy live - but then again so is Led Zeppelin. And some rock and roll doesn't have to be played with the perfection of a metronome to kick ass - CVH is a case in point.

Granted you said you thought he could put it down and that's what you thought he did - but I was specifically referring to the time when he did the Carson Dailey show. I was watching the balance tour(was free tape and only have it to see ed play) but I dont watch the video, I FF to see ed's solo. but it is funny when he plays the CVH stuff how much of a smile is on his face and how he seems to enjoy more then playing CVH stuff. looks very proud.

also put on my collection of Dave stuff from tv. was watching the 96' VMA's when they reunited with dave. man I forgot how young dave still looked back then! man they really did miss the boat on the whole reunion thing. what 10 years from being in your early 40's to now being in your early 50's will do. I think your early 40's seem to be your last horrah of youth. dave looked very young still in 96'.

on the old leno show with robin williams he just looks plain drugged. he was on something that makes you sweat badly so take your pick of drugs. the reason dave and ed have not toured yet is because dave is waiting for ed to clean up and dave needed cleaning up still himself. if he was on something himself(maybe cocaine ?) on carson it only showed in his weight cause he was pure 1984 form!!!!!

I beleive dave is clean now and has been a while. hes not getting any younger and is no dummy. he knows if eds clean and comes calling he needs to be in top form.

but to say dave sounded like a lounge lizard on carson is complete slam on dave. even the band sounded better than the original VH could have sounded at the time if they got back together a mess.

I was talking about the early days... the guitar speeds on the first 2 albums were ridiculous. Ed is washed up unless he can clean up his act and patch things up with Dave. He has a death wish built on years of anger, resentment, and substance abuse.

I don't think there was any pressure in the beginning. Ed did what he did, and the world went woah! Boom, guitar god. He did something new and different on every album to that point...

VH1, pull-offs, hammer ons, tapping, harmonics, speed solos, mixing blues, rock & boogie woogie
VH2, nylon string guitar solo, clocklike chimes
WACF, new pick scraping, pressing on p/ups, the Wurlitzer on ATCWR

Diver Down, volume swells, other new sound effects, new chord structures
1984, the keyboards, matured soloing, more mature arrangements

Musically, Ed hasn't done anything new since Dave left. I think the pressure has been mounting though, and I'm sure it's at an all-time high now.
