Aiiight and normally I'd just pm you (Brett) but since it's about their product and you own one, I thought it might be cool to just start a thread and put it in heeya,

Anyway, I haven't "played" in a band in yeeyas. Well, my friend started having these open "jams" two Fridays ago and it's been beyond fun. Just a bunch of us old coots gettin' together and playin'. It's in a huge room with killer acoustics. It's normally set up for banquets and private dining but my buddy runs the establishment, so we get an awesome rehearsal space for nothin'.

Babbling? Yes, I know but 'tis me. :)

Well, I got another friend of mine playin' with us and his old Barretta is just too fucked up. He wants a new one and I told him that I'd heard (from Brett) that those new Gibson/Kramer q984's blow for the money. I also remembered Brett posting about Mean Street guitars.

Ok and here's the question, if my buddy 'tis going to buy one, I figured WTF and I will as well. Just to keep up with the neighbors. lol

Brett, now you bought the "Unchained" model but you were able to purchase it in pieces and unfinished right?

Both my friend and I wanna do the same, paint our own finishes and so on.

If you could, give us the specs, so to speak? How's the quality, the wood, the tremelo, neck, etc?

And how much should I plan on spendin' for a "cheapie?" I'd like to keep it around $700 max. The site says the "Unchained" model (fully assembled) 'tis around $500. This axe will more than likely end up staying out in a huge locked cage out at said establishment. That's why I wanna buy a new semi-cheap axe and not haul my Strat nor my homemade "Frankie" copy.

Any insight or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, might as well plug their site since the thread 'tis about them and their product. lol

So click below. :)

My question?

Do they do the "Frankie paint job" on the guitars?

How much extra for that?

I'd like to see the finished product...............................:D

Why are you going for a half ass copy? The headstock isn't even close. Why not buy a Kramer 1984 and paint it up? You can find them on ebay all the time for around $600 with all the parts.

I'd be tempted to go for the Kramer mind. I've played one and they are nice guitars.

I'd say they're pretty close...

Always HATED the Pacer body, and all those quasi-Strat models. If I was gonna build a replica I'd go with an actual Stat body ala Frankenstein.

I'm not familiar with that parts company you posted. However, I'm plotting building a '57 Surf Green Strat Replica with a aged maple neck.

I've purchased necks from them before and their product 'tis superior.

Musikraft is a licensed Fender parts Maufacturer I'm gonna check out that supposedly makes dead-on copies of Charvel as well as Fender Parts. I have 3 (well, two and a half) Warmoth guitars and their parts do indeed kick ass.

They're the Koa and Tobacco Sunburst guitars in the pic, and the Purple one has a Warmoth neck. Loves 'em. :D

...I wouldn't mind sending a body to that guy to do a paintjob on, however...

If you're going the Frankenstrat route, why not go with a Warmoth body and neck. Great construction and very affordable.

I would get one of the Ibanez RG series MAXIMUS...

Try one out before you make the decision.
I bought one for a mate as a first guitar.
For the money, its quality, sound and overall
shredability was fucking great..

I actually want one now, but Im thinking of getting
another Les Paul. One just doesnt seem enough :D

Thanks Marky but I actually wrote this thread a while ago. It's just the subject came up again. I already purchased a 5150 replica and it's stellar.

Hey, speaking of Ibanez though...

My old drummer had to clear out his rehearsal space. Well. the guitarist who replaced me many years ago has been AWOL for years. Anyhoo, my pal let me have one of the dude's old rigs. It happens to be an old Ibanez speed weenie axe.

Here's what I've found out.

I have this yellow one on the right:

http://www.ibanezrules.com/catalogs/us/1989/s.jpg

The body, pickups, bridge and even that 80's neon, canary yellow finish are all EXACTLY what I now have. The only weird thing that I have is the neck is scalloped on the 21st through 24th frets? The ONLY model that I can find even remotely similar are those old Vai "JEM"models. However, they had maple fretboards and this one is rosewood. I'm gonna throw the fucker on electronic bay and see if I can get anything out of it. If the bidding's not worth the effort, I figure, I'll just through a Mean Street neck on it and have it as yet another "fuck around with" axe. Otherwise and although I truly appreciate your imput, I really have no interest in Ibanez's nor owning one. Well. maybe one of those old Vai Jems would be cool in a collection but by no means a top priority.

These two might be cool for sentimental sakes? lol

I've played everything and I'm back to Strats. You just can go wrong. They don't break unless you really abuse them. If put together right they will sustain like crazy and have gobs of tone.

I'm sold on Louisianna swamp ash for the body wood. It's light but tuff. It has a cool looking grain if you want a see through finish.

Warmoth makes a good neck but I like the Mighty Mite 9.5-12 compound radiouse necks and you save some money.

I use a Fender neck plate and screws and Schecter mini tuners.

There are so many things you can do to the basic Strat, you really can make it your own guitar and unique. Plus, can you name a more comfortable guitar to play?
