Rodman to play in British League

LONDON (Reuters) - Extrovert former NBA great Dennis Rodman has signed a one-game deal to play for Brighton Bears in the British Basketball League.

Rodman, one of the most recognizable sportsman in the world with his outrageous hair coloring, tattoos, piercings and unorthodox dress sense, will play for the Bears against Guildford Heat on Saturday in the club's 1,500-capacity arena.

"This will be seen as a publicity stunt and, yes, we want to attract people who might not ordinarily be basketball fans," Bears coach Nick Nurse said on the club's Web site.

"He's probably the best defensive player the world's ever seen over the past 20 years.

"The main reason we are doing this is to give basketball fans the chance to see one of the all-time greats playing here in BBL."

The 44-year-old Rodman won five NBA titles during a 14-year career with Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls and was twice voted NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Since his last NBA game for Dallas Mavericks in 2000 Rodman has played in several minor leagues, although his most recent claim to fame was appearing in the British reality game show Celebrity Big Brother.

      I don't understand this.

Rodman has just spent three weeks on Big Brother here in the UK for a few thousand dollars.

      Why would he do that?

I don't know much about him but surely he must be worth millions.

      I'm confused...

      Cheers!

Yeah it's a one game deal.

Basketball is still very minority sport here if he sells out it's a 1500 crowd.
