Can Ed Van Halen be considered a junkie?

I mean the latest pics I\'ve seen of him are not too flattering. He\'s a fucking mess. This topic was discussed briefly by us at the Links the other day. Max brought it up by the way. Then some of the homos that post at the Links didn\'t like that thought.

I dunno about a junkie, but he surely is either insane or retarded now.

Why else would a guitarist of his stature attempt to destroy his own legacy?

I mean come ON..have you ever seen any famous guitarist REFUSE to release footage of one of the greatest hard rock bands on the planet? Who refuses to even acknowledge his fans?

Who has produced almost nothing but slick, formulated baby-food for the masses for the past 20 years?

    He is bent on self-destruction....

    Him needs a psychiatrist...

Him worthless, almost teethless fucking dumbass...

I don't think you can consider him a junkie.

But, you can consider him a dysfunctional, alcholic asshole.

The only reason, from a psychological standpoint, is because there's something in the music itself that gives him emotional pain. His body of work either:

        1. Intimidates him (he's terrified he'll never reach a particular level again);

        2. Causes him mental and/or emotional anguish (in essence, there's something in his music, all of it, that pains him and that he wants to see buried and destroyed in the hopes that it'll relieve him of the pain).

Those are specific reasons why an artist of his stature sabotages their own work - it's done because, essentially, their own work terrifies them, or they feel intimidated by it and unable to live up to it's own legacy. The default solution?

        Destroy it, at all costs.

        Frankly?

I don't think it's so much that as much as it is that Ed just doesn't give a fuck anymore. IMO.

He can afford to sit on his ass and drink himself into oblivion for the rest of his life, sure. His health suffers, and so does the bands reputation and legacy. The fans suffer, too.

But hell - if Ed's happy...

If Eddie had died in 1985 ala Randy Rhoads, he would be revered as the number 1 guitar God of all time by everyone. (not just VH fans). There would not be top 100 lists anywhere where he did not hold the #1 spot over Hendrix, Clapton, Gilmoure and the likes.

Well, I guess he did die in 1985 and it's just taking 21+ years to finally lay him to rest.

Ed has every rite to destroy himself, it just seems that he may someday figure out he doesn't have too.

There are dumpster bums that still can't figure this out.

Rock bottom is not a area that must be achieved in order to grip your demons .You can grip them now at rock bottom or never.

Best of luck to ed and his demons.

                      May the demons never rule.

But definitely not #70 like that other thread floating around right now. Although that list is bullshit. But Ed going out in 1985 would have been like Michael Jordans 1st retirement.

Just because he ruined a 23 year marriage, his career, and his talent doesn't mean Ed is a junkie doe's it?
