    Profile

While Cafe Wha? claims to be the birthplace of legends like Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan, the truth is that they actually got their starts at the original location next door. Still, this basement tourist magnet milks the name for all its worth and accordingly, Wha? attracts a host of European and Japanese visitors who invariably take pictures of themselves in front of the garishly colorful façade. Live music remains the club's hook, with the house band playing covers of R&B, funk and classic rock Wed-Sun. The cover charge is a good thing here, helping to keep out the MacDougal horde of NYU kids with the munchies, and the drink prices are affordable, although there is a two-drink minimum. Still, for a place that claims to have people "dancing in the aisles seven nights a week," it's so cramped patrons can barely move, let alone groove. — Michael Y. Park

    Extra
Manny Roth, owner of the original Cafe Wha? and uncle to David Lee Roth, sold the bar to the current owner's family in 1988. The original Cafe Wha? is now a comedy club.

I was there twice! Very crowded place! I always thought the sign "Dancin' in the Isles" was ironic!

I've been there twice. I had fun the first time, but when I went back a few months later and heard the same band play the exact same songs (probably in the exact order) and the exact banter from the vocalists, etc. etc. I never went back.

CBGBs will be closing by September I think. IF I remember right, the management lost the fight to keep it open, but the owners of the building gave them 6 more months to find another place to move to.

As for the Cafe Wha? If ya wanna see it in the movies, go rent "The President's Analyst" Starring James Coburn.

It was filmed partly in NYC in 1966, and the film was released in 1967, so they were filming right around the time Jimi Hendrix was playing there.

So anyway, there is a scene where they show the original Cafe Wha? in a night time outdoors shot, so you can see what it looked like at the time.

I will see if I can remember to capture that scene onto my hard drive tonight when I get home (I have a factory VHS of the movie).
