Don't know if you've had this thread before, I checked through and couldn't find it.

What is the most bowl crushingly heavy song of all time?

Thoughts please......

Kind of depends on what your definition of heavy is. The heaviest song I can think of in terms of heavy, doom laden, pounding sound is maybe Black Sabbath, by of course, Black Sabbath.

It does all depend on your definition of HEAVY, which is subjective...

For me, it'd probably be something by Slayer,

Angel of Death

War Ensemble

Chemical Warfare

All spring to mind.....

binnie

Crowbar are also ultra-heavy on the Sabbath scale,

I would say "Planets Collide" wins the titles from them...

Is

THE THING THAT SHOULD NOT BE

Admitedly, 80's production hides the heaviness, but if you catch live footage....fuck me....

There's that quote from Rollins', where he goes, "every time we wanted to hear something HEAVY, we'd pick up the Van Halen record...it weighed a ton."

He was referring to the Black Flag days...it's interesting how alot of the punk bands dived into the "heavy", or "metal" arena.

I figured I'd throw a few examples of that out, as there's no way of defining the heaviest song. These are just albums.

Black Flag: In My Head

The Plasmatics: New Hope For The Wretched

GBH: Midnight Madness And Beyond

Figs

Here's a few songs that I think are the heaviest(No particular order):

1. Slayer-Raining Blood
2. Pantera-Yesterday Don't Mean Shit
3. Children Of Bodom-In Your Face
4. Anthrax-Caught In A Mosh
5. Black Label Society-Suicide Messiah
6. Nickelback-Side Of A Bullet (it's a Dimebag tribute, has his solos)
7. Bullet For My Valentine-4 Words To Choke Upon
8. Slipknot-The Heretic Anthem
9. Disturbed-Stricken

First off, I'd take the high road regarding Rollins ruining Black Flag. Make no mistake, it WAS Ginn's band. "Process" was Ginn's record...way ahead of it's time. Goes without saying that an album (EP) of complex instrumentation would hack off the SO CAL hardcore collective. Now THAT is a PUNK move.

Family Man, prior to that, had basically the same effect. Ginn's a smart guy, and I'm sure he appreciated Rollins' penchant for social commentary, so he let him have half the album, then blew him the fuck off of it doubling on Bass and Geetar.

Some might say more brutal than heavy, but I suppose it's all in the definition....

I agree, been into them for many years.

Not a band you can just listen too all the time, due to the abseence of melody, but when you ARE in the mood, you realise that there is NO-ONE who sounds like them.

HEAVY is a subjective term, it could certianly be applied.

But I knew it was only a matter of time before they cropped up!

All of their albums are exceptional but CHAOSPHERE is in a different league!

Too Poor To Die--Louisiana Red

Last night I had a dream
I dream I died
The undertaker came
To carry me for the ride
I couldn't afford a coffin
Embalmin' kinda high
I jumped off my death bed
Cause I too poor to die
I's in trouble
And I'll tell you the reason why
I'm just too poor people
I'm too poor to go lay down and die

I dream at the cemetery
I couldn't afford enough
To pay the gravediggers
To cover me up
It cost a lot of money
Cause they was union men
I guess before I die
I better think again
I'm in trouble
And I'll tell you the reason why
I'm just too poor people
I'm too poor to go lay down and die

Dream I met the devil
He is waitin' at the gate
Say "come on in Red
You ain't a minute late"
Said he lead me to his kingdom
Lead me by my arm
But he wouldn't move my body
Less I grease his palm
I's in trouble
And I'll tell you the reason why
I'm just too poor people
I'm too poor to go lay down and die

Yep, there is a live version of "The Thing That Should Not Be" on the Bside of the European single version of The Memory Remains. It was recorded at a tiny gig Metallica did to promote Reload at London's ministry of Sound in 1997. That live version is the heaviest thing i have ever heard. Period.

As for Meshuggah, you are spot on. Fuckin Brutal indeed! I think "Chaosphere" in an underrated modern classic album.

Apparently some guy did a doctoral thesis titles "The Theory of the Song By Meshuggah" - thats an obsessive fan.

The intro to this song is just awesome....

Bestow upon me knowledge
Wizard - all knowing all wise
I want to rule this kingdom
Make sweet the breeze now defiled
Dethrone the evil prince's iron fists
In velvet gloves of sin
Parade the grey robed monks
The vestal virgins, wheel the wyvern's in
Let the ceremony
consecrate the marriage
Let me be the protege
Of five magics
Give me alchemy
Wizardry
Sorcery
Thermatology
Electricity
Magic if you please
Master all of these
Bring him to his knees
I master five magics
Possessed with hellish torment
I master magics "5"
Hunting the abyss lord
Only one will stay alive
He who lives by the sword
Will surely also die
He who lives in sin
Will surely live the lie

Biotech Is Godzilla is the only song i don't dig that much although i don't hate it. Rest of the album is great! It's real heavy, cookie monster vocals and all, but it's still very melodic. Most bands playing in that style don't manage that.

To be honest, I have never like Slayer solos. They seem sloppy and hurt my ears most of the time. They don't flow with the riff or vibe of the song. But the main riffs of their songs are incredible. Raining Blood sounds like death marching music and is the ultimate slam pit song. Slayer pits can be downright violence to music. Once I got to the age where things started to hurt for a few days rather than a few hours, I retired myself from the mosh. I still have my steel toed Dr. Martin boots with plenty of battle wounds on them.

Kerry King has pretty much played the same solo for 20 years! True, they ain't in Megadeth league of musicianship.

What I meant was that not that many band can play so fast, with so many times changes, and still sound tighter than hell. I was talking about the musicianship of the band as a whole, sorry I should have clarified.

Well I know that Megadeth definitely has a lot of musicianship. I saw them open for Motley Crue back in '01. Of course musicianship wise they blew Motley off the stage. They were very tight and sounded great. Peace Sells is probably my favorite Megadeth album. I learned some of "Conjuring" and it's pretty heavy stuff. As far as speed goes I don't know if there's anybody that can play as fast as Slayer. But as far as other aspects of musicianship you're probably right. I also like their "Youthanasia" album.
