I have "Small Change" and am somewhat of a fan.

"Pasties and a G-String" is one of my all-time favorite songs. I love his scattin' on that track.

I got a belly full of you
      and that Leavenworth stuff
      now I'm gonna get out
      And I'm gonna get tough
      you been lying to me
How could you crawl so low
      with some gin-soaked boy
      that you don't know
      I come home last night
full a filth of Old Crow
you said you goin' to your ma's
but where the hell did you go
you went and slipped out nights
you didn't think that I'd know
      with some
gin-soaked boy that you don't know
Well I would bet you as far
      as Oklahoma by now
the dogs are barking out back
      and you're knittin' your brow
well I'm on your tail I sussed your M.O.
      from some gin-soaked boy
      boy that you don't know

      Bootiful.

I have only one album, "Heartattack & Vine", but it's one of my top fave records ever.
I dig Tom's voice, topics and lyrics a lot.
As far as vocals, he makes Joe Cocker or Springsteen sound like little boys.

Blood Money is the only one I don't have...it's good? Sometimes - like on The Black Rider - he goes too far off the deep end (espeically with the Weill influences) and loses me.

BTW, a GREAT soundtrack to get is BIG BAD LOVE...some great, great, GREAT blues work on there as well as a couple of of new Tom waits tracks, one being "Long Way Home", which is what got me thinking about the man again.

The guy in my sig has talked aboot doing a Tom Waits tribute album-he's done the odd track in the past. I think he did "New Coat of Paint", and "Gin Soaked Boy", maybe a few others. Looking forward to it.

I HATE Southside Johnny. The same way I hate John Cafferty and Beaver Brown...just a couple of average musicians riding on the coattails of Springsteen.

Never got into Waits, but I'll tell you a funny story about meeting him. I was wandering around with a friend of mine right after the bomb went off @ the '96 Olympics. We had no idea that a bomb had gone off, and were just freaking out in the middle of the street. Some dipshit had this Neopolitan Mastiff on a leash...if you know about these dogs, you'll know they're fucking HUGE. Anyway, I was petting the the thing, and some dude goes, "you're lucky that dog's half-asleep" or some shit. So I go, "why don't you go buy a Latte' motherfucker...maybe it's thirsty?" By the time 20 people told me "that was Tom Waits", he was gone.

                      There ya go.

I've never been a Springsteen fan. My opinion is that the best songs he ever wrote were "The Fever", "Talk To Me", "All The Way Home" and "Blinded By The Light"-3 of them he gave to Southside Johnny, and the latter was performed better by Manfred Mann.

I wouldn't say that Southside was riding on the coattails of Springsteen, considering their history (Dr Zoom and the Sonic Boom etc). He never asked Bruce to write those songs for him, he just gave them to him. And the only reason Steve Van Zadnt left The Jukes to join the E-Street Band was so Bruce had someone he could trust with him all the time in a business that you can't trust anyone. Southside could easily have been massive, using his connections with Springsteen to his advantage, but he didn't. He never did any of that, he was just happy playing bars and clubs, and still is.

Rain Dogs is the classic, the proverbial "if you only have one album by this artist" scenario. Everyone should have one.

Especially you Rust, I think you'd dig him a great deal. And, hey, Keef is on a couple of tracks (Blind Love, Union Square).
