That 1st Death Metal song - Dimmu Borgir - Vredesbyrd - is great, except for the "singing". The voice distracts from it. But if you try to block it out, the song rips. I just never really liked that type of vocals.

I agree it distracts from the rest of the song. The instrumental part is great. Whith that kind of vocal style you can sing whatever the fuck you like, because it's impossible to tell whether you're in tune or not.

I don't really get that type of singing. Seems like a lot of bands are doing it. The music is great and then some guy comes out and ruins it by grunting for 3 minutes.

Yeah, i think the idea is that grunting makes the song heavier and more menacing but i find that not to be true. The grunting just drowns out the melody which is a good thing if your band can't play but these guys obviously can. I dig Pantera but the rest of the grunters i tend to ignore.
