"Smoke on the Water" by DEEP PURPLE is the first song most aspiring rock guitarists learn to play when they first pick up a guitar. From the ubiquitous opening guitar riff to the blistering Ian Gillan sing-a-long vocal chorus, "Smoke on the Water" continues to be a staple of classic rock radio. To celebrate this iconic rock masterpiece and the release of Ian Gillan's "Gillan's Inn", music fans nationwide will be put to the test to see who can create the most kick-ass NEW version of "Smoke On the Water". Ian Gillan personally will help judge this fun talent contest, a la "American Idol", as contestants will battle with their mics and guitars to win the votes of their peers.
Synopsis: During this smokin' summer, musicians, Ian Gillan and DEEP PURPLE fans, aspiring singers, and anyone else that wants will compete to see who can play the best version of the legendary "Smoke on the Water" in three categories: Vocal, Lead Guitar, and Band version. Contestants will download a version of "Smoke on the Water" from Ian Gillan's "Gillan's Inn" minus the needed musical attribute named above. They will then upload their version and submissions will be posted up for visitors of the site to listen to and rate. Winners will be chosen each week based on the highest average rating, and at the end of the campaign three grand prize winners will be selected by a panel of judges, including Ian Gillan, to win various prizes. The winners of the vocal and lead guitar categories will win an all-expense paid trip to Vegas to perform live with Ian Gillan at the House of Blues and the winner of the band category will win free gear for their band.
