British Police Thwart Aircraft Bomb Plot

LONDON (AP) - British authorities thwarted a terrorist plot to blow up several aircraft mid-flight between the United States and Britain using explosives smuggled in hand luggage, officials said Thursday.

Britain's Home Secretary John Reid said the alleged plot was "significant" and that terrorists aimed to "bring down a number of aircraft through mid-flight explosions, causing a considerable loss of life."

Police arrested a number of people overnight in London after a major covert counterterrorism operation that had lasted several months, but did not immediately say how many.

The U.S. government responded by raising its threat assessment to the highest level for commercial flights from Britain to the United States early Thursday.


"We believe that these arrests (in London) have significantly disrupted the threat, but we cannot be sure that the threat has been entirely eliminated or the plot completely thwarted," said U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

Chertoff added in the statement there was no indication of current plots within the U.S.

Britain's national threat level was also raised to critical - a warning level that indicates the likelihood of an imminent terrorist attack. The threat rating was posted on the Web site of Britain's MI5 - the British domestic spy agency.

London's Heathrow airport was closed to most European flights Thursday morning following a heightened terrorist alert, officials said.

The closure on incoming traffic applied to flights of three hours or less, affecting most of the incoming flights from Europe, an airport spokesman said on condition of anonymity in line with airport policy.



Prime Minister Tony Blair, vacationing in the Caribbean, had briefed President Bush on the situation overnight, Blair's office said.

The British Department of Transport advised all passengers that they would not be permitted to carry any hand baggage on board any aircraft departing from any airport in the country. Passengers faced delays as tighter security was hastily enforced at the country's airports and additional measures were put in place for all flights.

British Airways said some flights were likely to be canceled. Laptop computers, mobile phones, iPods, and remote controls were among items banned from being carried on its planes.

"I'm terrified really, I'm really scared," said Sarah Challiner, 20, who was waiting to board a flight from Manchester's airport.

Hannah Pillinger, 24, seemed less concerned by the announcement. "Eight hours without an iPod, that's the most inconvenient thing," she said, waiting at the Manchester airport.

London's Heathrow airport was the departure point for a devastating terrorist attack on a Pan Am airplane on Dec. 21, 1988. The blast over Lockerbie, Scotland, killed all 259 people aboard Pan Am Flight 103 and 11 people on the ground.

The explosive was hidden in a portable radio which was hidden in checked baggage.

A Scottish court convicted Libyan intelligence agent Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi of the bombing in 2001 and sentenced him to life imprisonment. A second Libyan was acquitted.

In 2003, Libya officially accepted responsibility for the attack and agreed to pay relatives of each bombing victim at least $5 million.

On a lot of the flights I'm on every second person has a laptop because they are business people. Having to put your laptop in the hold will be a fucking nightmare, holding you up at the other end and god knows how many will get bust by baggage staff.

Also they are banning books at the moment. You can't even read on the fucking flight? Plus all of this will apply the minute you check in so if your flight is delayed for hours you're sitting there bored out your mind.

In the last 3 years I've been on maybe 250 flights. So many that some of the security guys at the big international airport say hello and know me.

This may sound dumb but I would rather take my chances with the odd plane being blown up and a one in 10 000 chance of me being on one than this new security misery.

In 2001 in the US 20 times as many people died on the roads than on 9-11.

Weighed down by the unpopular war in Iraq, Bush and his aides have tried to shift the national political debate from that conflict to the broader and more popular global war on terrorism ahead of November 7 congressional elections.

The London conspiracy is "a stark reminder that this nation is at war with Islamic fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom, to hurt our nation," the president said on a day trip to Wisconsin.

"It is a mistake to believe there is no threat to the United States of America," he said. "We've taken a lot of measures to protect the American people. But obviously we still aren't completely safe."

His remarks came a day after the White House orchestrated an exceptionally aggressive campaign to tar opposition Democrats as weak on terrorism, knowing what Democrats didn't: News of the plot could soon break.

Vice President Dick Cheney and White House spokesman Tony Snow had argued that Democrats wanted to raise what Snow called "a white flag in the war on terror," citing as evidence the defeat of a three-term Democratic senator who backed the Iraq war in his effort to win renomination.

But Bush aides on Thursday fought the notion that they had exploited their knowledge of the coming British raid to hit Democrats, saying the trigger had been the defeat of Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut by an anti-war political novice.

"The comments were purely and simply a reaction" to Democratic voters who "removed a pro-defense Senator and sent the message that the party would not tolerate candidates with such views," said Snow.

The public relations offensive "was not done in anticipation. It was not said with the knowledge that this was coming," the spokesman said.

Snow said Bush first learned in detail about the plot on Friday, and received two detailed briefings on it on Saturday and Sunday, as well as had two conversations about it with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

But a senior White House official said that the British government had not launched its raid until well after Cheney held a highly unusual conference call with reporters to attack the Democrats as weak against terrorism.

An aide to Lieberman, who would have been one of the first Democrats to hear of the plot because he is the top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said the lawmaker first heard of it late Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Cheney had suggested that Democrats believe "that somehow we can retreat behind our oceans and not be actively engaged in this conflict and be safe here at home, which clearly we know we won't, we can't, be," he said.

While some Democrats have opposed some steps in the war on terrorism, and more and more are calling for a withdrawal from Iraq, no major figures in the party have called for a wholesale retreat in the broader conflict.

But Bush's Republicans hoped the raid would yield political gains.

"I'd rather be talking about this than all of the other things that Congress hasn't done well," one Republican congressional aide told AFP on condition of anonymity because of possible reprisals.

"Weeks before September 11th, this is going to play big," said another White House official, who also spoke on condition of not being named, adding that some Democratic candidates won't "look as appealing" under the circumstances.

I've been checking out these new rules today. You can buy anything and take it on the plane after you go through security.

Before you go through you can't take a book or makeup or anything but once you are through its all fine.

Now here is where the insanity starts. There was a foreign captain on TV yesterday saying that he was not allowed to take his aircraft safety manuals on board at Glasgow airport yesterday. These are the books that tell you what to do when something goes wrong with the plane. If you ever watch those TV programs about aeroplane emergencies you'll be aware of these things. Its the books that tell you what to do when a light comes on, do this, what happens, then try that kind of stuff. All civil aircraft have them.

Why in the name of living cunt would security stop that? Well it's the 'No sandals Jesus syndrome.' Stupid bureacracy idiotic shit. Hey if the pilot wants the plane to crash there's a pretty good chance he'll manage it huh? And he won't need to smuggle some shit in a book.

The second retarded thing is that they are doing this insane shit about what you can go through security with but once you are through security you can do whatever the fuck you like.

I've posted before about how all you would need to do is break a glass bottle you bought after security and stick it in the throat of the air hostess and 9-11 is on again. It's even worse than that though. At Heathrow airport there is a Boots pharmacy after you go through security where you can buy razor blades and for example soap. Classic create a box cutter prison shit in a dozen movies. Stick the razor in the soap and you have a better weapon than a boxcutter.

But that's fine apparently.

The fact I have a 50% chance of my 'extremely dangerous' $3k laptop being broken on Monday because I now have to put it in the hold though keeps everyone safe.
