Mayweather set to fight Cory Spinks

Well, Mayweather would be moving up to Junior Middleweight and going after his 5th title in five divisions...

Spinks is Leon Spinks' son...and Michael's nephew...and has been a good fighter...

but lost his second fight to Zab Judah last year...

    he's an able fighter...but won't beat Mayweather...

but...it's a good tune-up for Mayweather in what could be a windfall year for him next year if he gets his shots at both Mosely and de la Hoya...

    WE shall see...

    Cunningham: Mayweather-Spinks fight is on

The proposed fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Cory Spinks appears to be a done deal, according to many in the industry and the trainer of Spinks.

Several weeks ago, we reported here that Spinks (35-3, 11 KOs) and Mayweather (36-0, 24 KOs) were in talks for a an upcoming fight. Although Team Mayweather stated that Spinks would likley fall as Floyd's February opponent, Kevin Cunningham Sr., who trains Spinks, was confident the fight would land in November.
The date is Nov. 4, on HBO pay-per-view, in Las Vegas. Mayweather will be moving up to the junior middleweight division to attempt to win his fifth world title in his fifth weight class when he challenges Spinks for his IBF junior middleweight title.

In an interview with St. Louis Post Dispatch, Cunningham told the paper that both fighters have signed the contracts and ready to march towards Nov. 4.

"This is big. Cory's ready to take his career to the next level," Cunningham told the Post Dispatch. "Everyone says Mayweather's the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. This is one of the biggest fights in boxing outside the heavyweight division."

According to Cunningham, the IBF sanctioned the fight Tuesday, and the only thing left to do is for Spinks' promoter Don King to officially announce the fight.

"And they don't approve a championship fight unless all the contracts have been signed," Cunningham said. "It's 99 percent done. The one percent is Don announcing when the press conference will be."

Let me know when he fights someone...

          Great fighter...

          with Roy Jones Jr. Complex...

nobody worth a damn to legitimize anything...

Not exactly Mayweather's fault ... who is there to fight that would legitimize anything ... there are people I wish he would fight, and his greed is the reason some of these fights never happen.

As for Spinks though ... no chance. Every edge there is, Floyd has it over him.

He should be fighting Margarito, Hatton, and then onto DeLaHoya and Mosely.

No...not his fault...nor was it Jones Jr.'s fault either...

but even if Jones Jr. wouldn't have been horrible the past two years...he still wouldn't have been mentioned with the greats...even though...no doubt...his talent would have landed him there...

Mayweather...right now...is in the same boat...

Mayweather to fight Baldomir in November

                August 16, 2006

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Floyd Mayweather Jr., generally considered the world's best pound-for-pound boxer, will fight Carlos Baldomir for the WBC welterweight title Nov. 4 in Las Vegas.

Mayweather (36-0, 24 KOs) chose his next opponent last weekend after months of campaigning for a matchup with Oscar De La Hoya, who still hasn't decided whether he will retire. Mayweather won the IBF welterweight belt in his last fight with a unanimous decision over Zab Judah in April, but relinquished that title.

"This bout represents the linear world welterweight champion in Baldomir going against the pound-for-pound best in Mayweather," promoter Dan Goossen said.

Cory Spinks and Kostya Tszyu also were candidates to be Mayweather's next opponent, but Baldomir should generate much more excitement among fight fans.

Baldomir (43-9-6, 13 KOs) hasn't lost a fight in nearly 10 years, mostly recently stopping Arturo Gatti in the ninth round on July 22. The 35-year-old Argentine was hungry to fight Mayweather for the biggest purse of his career, calling out Mayweather moments after beating Gatti.

Baldomir also upset Judah earlier in the year, winning the WBC title but failing to claim the IBF and WBA titles because he didn't want to pay their sanctioning fees from his meager $100,000 purse.

The fight will be held at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on a pay-per-view broadcast by HBO.

                  still a Mayweather win though...

                    Mayweather, easily.

I'd like to see him fight Ricky Hatton at Welterweight next. That would be a classic Boxer-Fighter confrontation.

Any word on the possibility of Mayweather - De La Hoya??

It's all up to De La Hoya...

I think...De La Hoya is letting it fester a bit to get more money out of it...

                      Mayweather wins another fight...

                      then fights De La Hoya...

and win or lose...DLH comes out with 30 or 40 million guaranteed from the fight...then you retire with more than enough...

                        Cha-Ching is the thing.

Not only a chunk of change for Oscar, but the money Mayweather is always bitching about getting also.
