68 on the NBC. Who would forget Elvis?

Every year I like to "introduce" him to a couple of my classes through a video excerpt as an appetizer, then the study of a few facts about him, the study of a song ("If I can dream", "Are you lonesome tonight" - the "laughing version" -, "Big Boss Man"...) and finally I show them a few chosen video bits. Students often don't know much about the King, and every time they're just delighted.

I remember it well....even though I was only 8 years old.

I was on my way to the Jersey Shore with my family in our old Ford Galaxy 500, when the news came across the radio that the King of Rock 'N Roll had died.

It's ashame what the attention-whores, hangers-on, and tabloids have done to your legacy, King.

Rest In Peace.

HA!!

In the car with the family...9 years old....

I remember the DJ asking for a moment of silence...and my Mum started crying...and my Dad started LAUGHING....he was a rascal...my old man!:D

My Dad had a point...ELVIS lived like NO OTHER...and burned the candle at both ends...for decades....

ROCK ON KING

I walked into a stripper bar in Huntsville, AL.

The jukebox was silent....everyone was at the bar watching the TV....it was a Friday, and usually the place was hoppin'.....so I asked one of the girls what was going on...she said "Elvis died".

It was a very subdued evening at that bar.

I still have the Huntsville newspaper from the next morning with the headlines...

Was sitting with my Grandma in N. Door County Wisconsin trippin. 1st Icon loss that mattered. My dad was in the Army with him in Germany so he'd tell me cool stories back in the day.
The only other news i remember as a kid is the Watts Riots. Even before i could talk my mom freaked out seeing him/LAPD on the tube in the crossfire-just rembered drama because she was hysterical

My misguided friend...

If you're going to rip apart music and/or entertainment legends who went down in flames because of drugs, and claim that they're not worthy of being revered based on their talent and what they gave us...

Then perhaps you had best stay away from forums like this.

And since you invoked the name of Kennedy, then we should all think he's a worthless asshole too who's not worthy of his notable place in history because he was a philandering fuck who ignored his family to chase tail like his daddy before him?

Never mind his impact on this country and the world, the barriers he broke down, and what he accomplished during his short term in office.

Take up latchhook, asshat.

I was 10. I had been an Elvis fan, even though none of my friends understood that. I used to listen to my dad's old 45s. You didn't hear a ton of Elvis on the radio in those days, and I remember turning on CJAD 800 in Montreal, and they were playing all this Elvis. They didn't have any announcer break for quite a while. My mom and dad came back from grocery shopping and my mom asked me, "Did you hear?" I thought she meant, did I hear that they were playing Elvis on CJAD. So I said "Yeah"...Then, later I turned on the tv and saw that Elvis was dead, and realized what my mom had been asking me.

Elvis was The Frist guy ever in a Superstardom Role in Rock And Roll. Without him, A lot of Rock and Roll would not exist, because He brought the Blues type Rock to the mainstream. A lot of DLR's on stage persona would not exist as well.

Now mind you I'm not a huge fan of him, I truly only know a couple of His songs, But to deny his impact on the world of music, just because of the way he went out, would be rather stupid..

I was 9 and I was listening to a transister radio in the living room when the news report came over that The King was dead. I ran into the kitchen to tell my mom what happened. A very sad day for the world. I remember watching his last television appearance with my friends a couple of months earlier. He was real heavy and out of shape, but he turned it on that night as if he new it would be his last show. R.I.P KING. The greatest voice in rock and roll.

Fuckit, I'll do the kennedy thing (even though I dont think I was
even alive when JFK got shot) If I was, I must have been still on the
bosom..

I was in primary school, about 5 or 6 I think when I heard..
I just remember this one chick we had in class that always wore
an Elvis t-shirt. Every single day.. She cried all day..

Like the beatles, he was a pioneer and has so many classic
songs, you cant count them all...

Many of Elvis's songs to me were (and still are) very haunting.

Well you have a right to your opinion, but how can you not give props to the King?? Yeah he left the planet on a sour note, but just look at his track record. Even the mighty Beatles kissed his ass. The guy was a borderline God among men. He left the world a musical legacy that no one can touch. To this day his influence rings worldwide. The only style of music he never recorded was Hard Rock because he could not find a song that matched his style. Country, Rock, Gospel, he did it all. Name one artist today that has his range. Shit, today so called Rock and Rap stars can't even carry a tune. They are dependant on effects and electronic gadgets to carry them through. Rappers can't even sing so they don't even count.
I recommend downloading or buying some classic Elvis tunes and giving him another chance. He also had a great guitarist in his early years buy the name of Scotty Moore. The guy was an amazing player and for that time period he really created some beefy riffs on the early recordings. Check out The 68 Comeback Special and listen to That's Alright Mama, the guitar work is killer. Sorry you don't get it, but Elvis is the King period.

Was 7 years old, at my Aunt's house in Maine. She was a HUGE Elvis fan (had the velvet Elvis painting on her wall and everything); she was crying, just couldn't be consoled. Played her 'Elvis Sings Gospel" records the rest of the day.

I knew who he was, but he hadn't really done much the last few years of his life, so I was kinda confused as to why so many people were upset about it at the time...

I'll tell you, though, I don't have any use for the movies he made in the 1960s...but I think he was a BRILLIANT performer. Have had Elvis:That's The Way It Is in my collection for years, first on vhs and then later on dvd, and that performance and movie are incredible. The '68 Special was excellent too, Aloha From Hawaii a little bit less so...Am hoping that This Is Elvis is put out on dvd soon, so I can see those concert clips from one of his last performances where he's standing there, dripping in a painkiller pill-induced sweat, sluggish from being so bloated, nearly speaking in tongues as he tries to get through the spoken section of Are You Lonesome Tonight...for some reason I get spellbound when watching that...not out of glee that he was close to death...but just watching him bottom out...sort of a rubbernecking at an accident mentality.
