Mic placement for recording Quad Box..

What do you all reckon is the best
posisiton to place the mic in front of
    a Marshall quad box ??

    (For Recording)

Point that sucker straight at the center of the
four speakers, angle it, or a few feet in
    front aimed at center??

Im just fooking around with an SM57 at the
moment and was after some pointers.

Straight at the center sounds good to me
so far.... Ive almost got the sm57 touching
the center point of the cab....

How do you all get your best results ??

You on the right path. Right at the center and play with the distance between the mike and box by doing a few test tracks. Room acoustics come into play here and approaches will vary on what sounds best. When you get the distance right you will know it.

Personally, I prefer to have a mic with "big ears" about 3 to 6 feet from the cab with the amp turned waay up. (If it's just my parts being recorded)

Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

In all honesty you're not going to get a great sound recording like that. I highly encourage you to get a mixing board and record through that.

          Doc Mad Vibe,

          I have a 20 channel 1000watt yamaha
          mixing desk/pa...

I have all the shit, dont worry, just wondering about
mic placement tips.. (As I appreciate all the tips
from the veterans here, Im new to producing and
recording my own stuff). Equipment is not an issue...

Im getting some very cool old school sounding
Marshall tones just aiming the mofo right at the
center of the cab... Almost touching it...
          (with the sm57)

I thought there would be more science involved ?

You can't beat a 57 on a cab, nothing is better. It is always good to also use one or two other condenser mic's off the cab for room and ambience and blend em. Glad to hear you have a mixing desk cause it probably would not have sounded so good without one.

I place the mike usually on just one speaker. When putting it in the middle of the cab you get some comb filtering that I don't like.

G'day Eric, thats something I havent tried. I was in the mindset that you *had* to get all the speakers.. I will have to try that !

That's the techniqe the big boys use. You'll have to find the best sounding speaker of the four and stick it on that bitch. I like to place it right where the dust cap meets the cone and sometimes I angle the mic almost parallel with the cone angle, towards the dust cap. Experiment my brother.

Mark, you might also add a distance mic in the mix too, just so the cabinet can "breathe" a bit.

Sounds like I need to buy another 57 then !

I wouldn't use a 57 for that, they are a more "up close and personal" type of mic. Try a large diaphram condenser microphone for distance miking.

Im getting so obsessive about tone now,
that its delaying the whole friggin song lol... :p
