    The Draft

Is it true that kids in the US need to register even though there is no draft at the moment?

Yes. At eighteen, all men must register with "Selective Service" or they cannot qualify for financial aid, gov't benefits, etc.

Sad but true. I registered as a "conscientious objector" in 1984, because without doing so, I couldn't vote against Reagan or go to school.

Yep. I did it the week after my 18th birthday. Would have joined the services (Air Force), but medical reasons make me ineligible.

Wasn't Carter the one who reinstated draft registration in 1980?

                He may well have been.

BTW, the actual draft started under two Democrats too. FDR started the draft in 1940 in the build up for WWII which was inevitable at that point. And Truman restarted (it ended after WWII) the Draft after U.S. got initially their asses kicked in Korea.

If it's needed it's needed...hopefully it won't be used for some (nameless) pointless war.

Impotence and chronic halitosis are valid reasons for exemption?????

So you're saying that you'd prefer that the US retain its all volunteer army policy, and thus cause the only people who join those who buy the horseshit propaganda and those who have no other resort in their young lives?

A draft and mandatory service would only do this country - ANY country - good. It would make everyone think six times before they support any war.

Oh, and this war DOES have a name...originally it was Oreration Iraqi Freedom, but in a couple of years the texctbooks will refer to it as WWIII.

Actually it was was originally called Operation Iraqi Liberation, but the name was changed because the acronym was a little too revealing.....

                              This thread is interesting.

I never knew about this. You can register as a conscientious objector?

Back before gay people in the military could you just register as gay?

Do women have to do it now too?
