    Satriani v. The Smoking Loon

I am chilling out at home flipping channels; was hoping to be watching some football tonight but realized there ain't any on because of Game 2 of The World's Most Boring Sport.

So, I'm flipping channels and lo and behold come across a live Joe Satriani concert. I've never owned any of this guy's shit, and also think that the way some guitar wonks call him "Satch" is more than a little gay, so am definitely not disposed to be in his corner. But anyway, I'm watching this guy play right now and am struck by how much better he is than Eddie V. is right now -- I mean WAY better. The guy is playing some sick shit, and making it look downright effortless. Unlike with Deadward, I'm not hearing anything muddled, his guitar isn't unplugging every 5 minutes, and he looks stone cold sober. I remember when The Lying Dutchman could play badass like that; those days are long gone.

But I really didn't realize just how much skill The Smoking Loon has lost over the years until now.

p.s. -- Satriani is wearing dark sunglasses on stage, just like The Round Rocker does. I'm guessing they both do it for the same reason -- to hide the wrinkles around their eyes.

Calling a guy by a nickname is gay?

Guitar shredding is like athletics. Once you quit practicing and give up any mainteneance routine, you're fucked just as daddy is. Alcoholism has nothing to do with it. Shaking your balls all day long does.

Eddie is a shadow of his former self.

But without Ed, there would be no Satch........

I find a lot of Satriani's music dull, he seems to be quite aimless at times and needs to revert back to the melodeis more often (IMO). Don't doubt he's a great technician though....

Is it any suprise? We saw it comming a long time ago. You can't smoke four packs of cigarettes a day and wash the nicotine resin down your throat with gargantuine amounts of alcohol and live a healthy older life.

Ed is in his mid 50's and for the way he abused himself since age 12, he's an old man. The cancer treatments really finished the dude. I've seen people go into chemo and never come out the same mentaly.

Whatever it is, Ed isn't the same dude he once was and his guitar ability wained with it. Is it any suprise really?

All those G3 guys like Satriani are marvelouse technitians but they couldn't write a song that moves anybody to save their lives. Satch bores me to tears. I can handle maybe three of his best songs but after that ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz.

I want a good player but I also want to be moved by the music and some showmanship is nice. Eddie had all the forementioned in the day as other guitarists did.

Seeing a G3 show is like going to a piano recital basically. LOL!

                              Brent,

Your nut-swinging on the Lying Dutchman is well known. I wasn't talking about vintage Ed, bitch -- my post, and point, was clear.
