Well...the $2,500+ guitar supposedly sounds better due to the lack of a paint job....

Cool guitars....SRV & John Lee Hooker played 'em on occasion............

I suppose the John Lennon model are made at the Gibson factory with Gibson parts, and the cheaper one are made in Korea with korean/chinese parts...
Put some original Gibson or Duncan pickups in the cheap one, and you will have a great guitar. The cheap Epiphones are very good guitars except for the pickups.

I would rather put that money into a Gibson 335. You would spend less and the Gibson name holds it's value better.

I hear some of the upper tier Japanese made Epiphones rival good Gibsons.

In the end, it's your money and if that particular flavor toots your horn then you have to be the decider because you have to live with it.

I think Epiphone is using a gimmick to up the price. You are paying way more for no finish. Think about it. They are making people pay a premium for a guitar that is not completely done and they pocket the money they save on the painting opperation plus the John Lennon bonus.

            I smell marketing scheme here.

Am I the only one who likes the unique headstock shape of the Epiphones? I think they look like mustaches .

Too be honest, I think it's the same damn guitar. The only way to tell for sure is to play both and see.

Epiphone was founded by a Greek dude who named the company after his son Epi. Les Paul who's real name is Lester Paulos is Greek and actually worked for Epiphone and that is where he built his first electric guitar called "The Log" out of an old Epiphone guitar. When Gibson showed an intrest in developing an electric guitar Les Paul worked with Gibson and later convinced Gibson to buy Epiphone.

Les Paul invented the Spanish Electric guitar but Leo Fender was the first to mass market them. Electric guitars before the first Fenders were either homemade or one of a kind custom jobs.

Epiphone is where some of the earliest electric guitar research took place done by non other than Les Paul himself, so Epiphone is as much of a historical guitar name as Fender or Gibson.

I have an Epiphone G-400 (A 3 pickup SG with all the fancy binding and inlays). I got it on a closeout sale for $250. The guitar sounds great and the only bad parts really are the cheap pots and switch. The woodwork, fretwork, inlays, and binding are suprisingly good.

I freak people out because I just abuse the guitar. To me it's a cheap guitar and I shake it to get the warbly effect. Bend the neck like SRV used to do. I go Pete Townsend on it hard.

People freak because they think it's an expensive guitar worth thousands and I'm beating the fuck out of it. Haven't snapped the neck off yet. LOL!

Mine came setup with perfect action! It's completely stock. I haven't done anything to it. It's a great playing guitar and I even can live with the stock pickups. I'll change the cheap ass controls when they finally break.
