Taking into account the post 1984 offerings by EVH I just wonder how Dave could have even made them better. The program was always EVH writes the songs and DLR sings them. By and large that program continued with SH, with SH providing more lyrically. That said, given the weakness of the post 1984 songs compared to those produced prior to 1984, could Dave have made them any better? For instance, Me Wise Magic sucked. Flame me, but it sucked some serious shit. It has nothing on Unchained, And The Cradle Will Rock, Jamie’s Crying, Atomic Punk, Take Your Whiskey Home, and the list goes on. Rumor has it that Roth never liked Jump…EVH’s first venture into bubble gum music. So would Dave been stuck with the same old weak shit SH got?

I think they blew their load once 1984 hit, the well ran dry. Yes, their last 2 offering were very weak. I am another who thought Jump sucked.

Uhhhhh...No

EVH wrote the music...DAVID LEE ROTH arranged the various riffs into workable songs...with imput from SHEMP, Ted, & Donn Landee.

And DAVE is a far superior lyric writer than Spammy Haggis.....

You'd have to be legally retarded to think otherwise...............

Then how do you account for Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff No More? Dave was stuck with some crap riffs and couldn't do anything with them. So what was he to do with Feels So Good, Black and Blue, Can't Stop Loving You and the host of other forgetable songs? Nah...the party was over after 1984.

DAVE didn't have a choice in 1996...

it was "Sing...to this"

EVH has always wanted cuntplete control...and the Meth & Booze bit him in the ass.....

DAVE quit VAN HALEN in 1985 bcause he hated the cheesey Power Ballads EVH was into........

its all in CRAZY FROM THE HEAT...........

Yes the party was over after 1984 and that is why spammy is a piece of shit riding on DLR coat tails. It is clear you are a spammy sheep with your posts. You claim not to be a spammy supporter but say,
" give the guy some credit" and then say "BUT if you don't like it....talk to EVH." and then ask and I'll quote"Taking into account the post 1984 offerings by EVH I just wonder how Dave could have even made them better"

Sure sounds like a spammy sheep to me kamaboko!

I have always thought that it would have been cool to hear Dave do Good Enough, Summer Nights, Finish What You Started, Poundcake, Black And Blue, AFU, and Amsterdam. You can hear Daves influence on the 5150 album. It is almost like they were trying not to reinvent the wheel. After that they had to change it up to fit Sammy's style.

Of course Dave would have made them better. The songs would have been completly different with his influence. Even though CGTSNM and MWM aren't as good as most CVH tunes, they are still better than msot shit that has been recorded since 96 with any band.

Can't Get This Stuff No More and Me Wise Magic kicked ass. I thought they were the best songs I'd heard out of Van Halen since middle school. Probably because they were.

Bottom line it for ya all - if David had stayed, it wouldn't have worked. Eddie wanted to write fucking love songs and take the band more mainstream once he came out of his alcoholic binges and drug induced stupor. 1984 is as far as that road should have gone, period.

Could 5150 and all the rest of that horse shit be better had David stayed? Maybe...probably not...the tensions in the band were so thick at that point you could cut clean through them.

It stopped working, that's it, and speculation is useless. 5150 and everything after it, save the 2 songs in '96, sucked shit.

Deal with it.

You have got to remember that sammy played guitar and *arranged* stuff as well. So that is why you get a lot of watered down shite post 86'

Back in the day it Dave lyrics, ideas.
Ed Music riffs etc
Alex Did what he was told
Bass player made the tea/coffee

Katie loves ya!

10 to 1 the 4 or 5 songs they recorded with Dave in 2000, are better than anything any band has done since Dave left VH in 85.

Maybe he could save some of the song, if he were allowed to arrange them......but even Dave can't save Why can't this be love.....the song is designed for the dry heaves

"Me wise magic" and "Can't get this stuff no more" are different but damn good. They are like an oasis in a sea of musical shit. If anything new comes out, I hope it has a heavy Dave influence. Listening to albums from "VHI" to "A little ain't enough" shows that Dave still had the ability to write good lyrics long after they had parted ways.

Personally I love Me Wise Magic & Can't Get...
Hmm what would Roth do with Finish What You Started? He wouldn't sing about lettin' it slide when another guy sleeps with your gal!
I liked the song but that loser lyric always bugged me. Don't know if Roth could've kept Ed away from keyboards...

Would have loved to hear Dave sing 5150, Summer Nights and Best of Both Worlds. Why Can't this be Love is the worst tune VH ever did behind Finish what you Started and How Many Say I. CGTSNM and MWM were incredible...two of my all time favorite VH songs.

NO! Because Dave is a weak baritone while Sammy is a tenor. Dave can't sing anything that has a melody.

I certainly think DLR and VH after 1984 would have been great to hear thats for sure. Who would know what would be next. The anticipation for the next album wouldve been great thats for sure. I wouldve like to hear what they had to offer on the follow up to 1984 with DLR .
