Here is what i am imagining: lights go dark...crowd goes shitless...low sounds of 1984 gently getting louder....chants of EDDIE!!....BOOM!! concert lights hit and they rock JUMP as the opener!! start the tour just as they left their last tour. the sammy days are just a bad dream. your thoughts!

Lights are out, crowd is going crazy with anticipation and bang Meanstreets with the intro stretched out for a couple of minutes. Spotlight falls on Ed for the main riff then the whole building comes alive with the entrance of bass and drums. Dave flys off the drum riser and Van Halen has returned.

The shame about the internet is that 98% of people will know the opening song and the whole rest of the setlist before they ever see it.

My thoughts exactly...

Unless they switch up the set night by night, but I don't think Wolf's nowhere near experienced enough for a revolving setlist...

ELVIS

So, it's ok that he's playing bass in what was once the worlds greatest rock band, but "nowhere near experienced enough for a revolving setlist" ??

There are so many songs that they can open with, but I agree with fe_lung most: "Mean Street" with the full intro would be the best opener IMO too.
That said, I'd bet my shirt that they'll play "Unchained" first.

No.

I've been against him being in the band from day one...I haven't hidden that at all...but the reality of it is, he's there. And, going out on stage and performing as an amateur, I don't think Ed or Dave are stupid enough to confuse him with a rotating setlist. They've been on stage doing the whole "professional music thing" for too many years. And hell, if I know better, they should too...

By every estimation, Wolfgang's comparitively very new to the material and the instrument, and regardless of how good he is (or is purported to be), I don't think he's going to be anywhere near apt enough to be able to have the entire CVH songlist ready to go at any given point.

Even a full flenged, widely experienced new bassist completely familiar with Van Halen, with x years of experience in the can would have some degree of difficulty adapting to a revolving setlist, you know that as well as I do.

Reminds me of the story of back in their good old drug addled days Aerosmith swapped their set around so that the encore became the opener.

Joe Perry came onstage, played one song, waved to the crowd and walked off.

Jump ??
Little Guitars ??
Take your Whiskey Home ??
Me Wise Magic ??

Come on boys....

The natural selection would be Unchained, and I certainly wouldn't bitch about it, but let me throw out another choice....

Watch this video, and then picture it if Ed and Mike (oops, meant Wolfie) are actually on the side platforms instead of the drum risers to start the show.... Of course, Dave comes off of the riser to open....

Not a question in my mind it'll be "Unchained". It was the opener before and it should be.

But if i had a choice, i'd ask for "Light up the Sky" or "A Van Halenized "Back in the Saddle"..or..
you know what, if it makes it to philly and they play, i dont give a fuck what it is as long as i hear EVH<AVH and DLR's voice actually singing it!

Unchained seems the most likely.

But... and just picture this... the room is completely dark. Everyone's nose is bleeding in anticipation... and from out of nowhere you hear an acoustic guitar sound... and the words:

You corner my dog, It don't let you past,
Got a bad lil' woman, gon' bite yo' ass
Yeah,
Wont let you past
Ah Yeah!
Wah!

And the room's filled with lights as Dave jumpsfrom the drum riser, the band blasting into The Full Bug in Full Power,

There'd be some heart attacks and quite a few female orgasms, that it would.

Guaranteed to satisfy!

Cheers! :bottle:

ELVIS

And Dave falls to the floor from a torn ACL...

Ed yells "TONIGHT IS NOT ABOUT YOUR ACL!"

Wolfie yells "MOMMY!"

And Alexis yells but nobody cares anyway...

VH opened with On Fire on the Fair Warning tour.

Wonder if Dave can pull that one off though these days --- lots of screamin' in that one.

Most singers would blow their voice with that tune --- its very Ian Gillan-ish.

Thinking over it again, maybe "Mean Street" would be better placed as the second or third song.
It's true that "Romeo Delight" or "Hot for teacher" would fit better as openings.
I bet they'll choose to start with "Unchained", though.

Unless they ask the fans for their choice (like the Stones did years ago for one tune per night), but there's little hope for that, I guess.

Hey, I can hear it already!

Plus opening with a track from the first album sounds great.

Anyway it has to be a fast one. "I'm the one" is one, and yes, it would fit with the situation - Dave back on stage singing with "his" VH.

House Of Pain. At the first break, think a suspension of disbelief re-work.

Dave: "Hang on, hang on......ED!!"

Ed's guitar imitating Vai's guitar: "What?"

(backing bass/drums of course)

Dave: "I THINK THE SONG IS SLOW!"

Ed's guitar imitating Vai's guitar: "Laughing"

Dave: "WHOAH!! HEY, WASN'T THAT THE LAST SONG ON OUR LAST ALBUM??

Ed's guitar imitating Vai's guitar: "Uh-huh"

Dave: "WHAT SAY WE TAKE IT A LITTLE FURTHER BACK?"

(Dave and Ed simultaneously glance to the crowd)

Out of nowhere, Ed's guitar gets alot louder, and just fucking screams into the intro of........

I'M THE ONE!!!!!

All kinds of pyrotechnics go off, and folks in the audience start fucking fires and shit!!!
