Just because he has been in rock music for a long time, his personal history of music has simply not been good. His biggest and best album (VOA) was just not a good album. Seriously, Sammy fans. Dave's DLR Band album was really kick butt. It would not be credible to say that album didn't rock in a way reminiscent of old VH.
