View Full Version : What are you realistically expecting to see/hear?

It's been over 20 years since the boys played on one stage, much less one record.

To be honest, I haven't listened to much Eddie since Balance. Seems like most everything had become retread city, except those tracks with Dave on the greatest hits compilation, which were pretty danged good.

But reading comments from people who seem to be 'in the know,' Eddie's playing has degenerated quite a bit in the last 10 or so years. I am sure the booze and the illness have contributed to that. Can he recapture the fire?

Wolfie has been playing bass a year or so. Again, that was a year or so. He is 15. Again, that was 15. I fear he will crap his pants the first time he has to take the stage in front of 15,000 REAL Halenites...but can he hold his own?

From what I've heard of Dave the last handful of years, he's actually held up pretty well vocally. Physically, though, let's be real...he ain't a spring chicken any more. How will he hold up under the expectations/pressue of being onstage with Eddie again?

Alex seems to be Alex. You can say what you want about the jokers mentality or attitude or whatever, but he may be the most underrated drummer in rock history (mainly because he just happened to fall into a band with a guitar player and vocalist who were so good they just overshadowed everything else). Alex will be fine.

What do you expect realistically?

Terry

Realistically, I expect a solid show.

If Ed shows up and nails the old licks, that's all I'd really like to see and hear from him. He's not gonna reinvent the wheel again, so he can save his "inspired noodling" for his home studio demos. Just play the tunes the way he wrote them.

Alex is a decent enough drummer. PERHAPS underrated...but he'll be fine, agreed.

It won't take much for Wolfgang to replicate the bass parts. Perhaps the backing vocals will be different, but this is small potatoes.

Long as Dave makes the effort to sing the verses and Ed is playing well, it's gonna be a good night out.

Ain't expecting some earth-shattering experience that is gonna rank up with the best live shows I've ever seen, but am still hoping that Van Halen 2007 is gonna go out there feeling like they still have something to prove; if their energy levels are up and they got the fire, it could be a great gig to be at outside of just seeing Ed and Dave together onstage again.

I expect them to try to replicate the past. Regardless if Eddie likes it it will be a nostalgia show....a last chance to see Dave and Eddie onstage again.

Unless they put out an album of all new material....then we'll have something else to talk about.

I went to a Dave Lee concert sometime in the fall at a shitty casino near by.

The band fucking rocked. Guitar was awesome, vocals kicked ass.

It was a small venue, shitty crowd (barely packed, and most looked like they were giveaway tickets) and the damn thing ROCKED.

So I'm assuming that in a bigger venue, with Edward Van Halen backing him, it's going to be a thousand times better.

Dont call it Classic Van Halen, or a reuinion, or whatever, but consider it a David Lee Roth show. That right there should be making you buy a ticket, regardless who's on bass.

I agree. But if that talk gets up in the air it will set off Eddie on wild jealous tangent, which could make for some great comedy.

This is a fragile little world surrounding VH mk Ib.

No power ballads!!

Even if we don't get any new music we get 2 hours of CVH (we can always hope for MWM or CGTSNM in the set and maybe some of the old cover tunes)

Even if Ed pulls a sissy fit ala 2004 we get Dave to entertain us. No more Spammy McGaygar hawking tequila and signing autographs instead of singing.

Even though we have a child on stage we don't have to put up with bass player's tired, old, uninspired solo.

Outdoor, amphitheatre shows...summer weather...cold beer...spliffs...even if it's bad, who cares!

Summertime in general. Warm summer night, good friends, cold beer, a little kind, a woman with a smile. Now that my friend is life. Throw Van Halen in the mix with Dave back at the helm and you have Good Times. Damn Good Times.

If that isn't a damn Good post, i don't know what is!!!!!

Well...coming from someone who has seen the real deal several times, this is what I would expect to see.

Dave: In great shape and totally animated on stage. I think his vocals will hold up for the first half of the tour then begin to break apart after that. If he uses the same old lines such as "I'm gonna fuck your girlfriend" as he had in the 80's, he really will turn it into a nostalgia show and that would be sad. It worked in his 30's, but not in his 50's. Dave has to reinvent himself for the 21st century. For example; for those that can relate, it would be like seeing someone at your 20th high school reunion that still acts 18. Not cool.

Ed: If Ed goes into the "zone" he'll put on a great show. If he's tipping the bottle, then expect to see some really shitty playing. I saw them twice for the 84' tour. The second show was toward the end of the tour and it was apparent that Ed and Dave were not getting along. Ed was drunk off his ass and his playing seriously sucked. Keep him sober and he'll do fine.

Alex: Hmmm...I don't really care.

Wolfie: A mistake in my opinion, but we'll have to wait and see.

Eddie, I think Ed will deliver (He has to) It's put up or shut up time.

Dave, I i really don't know on this one. All the film footage iv'e seen over the past couple of years hasn't been that good vocally.
I hope he looks after his voice this time round and delivers (his legend status depends on it)

Alex, After 3 years of no work here's BACK!..............playing drums again LOL

Wolfie, Can't see big crowds bothering him as he dipped his toes in the water back in 2004 when he shared a bit of the spotlight with dear ol dad.

All in all im hoping for a kick ass show.
And we all know VH haven't *kicked Ass* for many years!

Well, anybody should be skeptical at this point...Van Halen's been hit and miss (mostly miss) for how many years?

It has to work...because this is probably it. Last leg of the race, folks...if they've got anything left in the tank, this is the time to burn it.

Saw Dave in St Pete a couple of years ago, the best part was he was playing CVH, his voice not bad for 50 years plus but who cares I know all the words. Its all about Eddie, sure Dave is the best front man in the history of rock n roll and no matter what he sounds like he always will be. Eddie on the other hand has been not in a downward spiral but a free fall.....that one chord screaming shit has to end. With that said the good news is his son will be there (hopefully to keep him sober) and they have been rehearsing which they didn't do in 04. Alex was by far the best of the 04 act period. Wolfgang on bass, the music isn't that hard to learn and play. It comes down to Eddie. Can he play or is there a disconnect between his ear, his fingers and his brain. He can carry the band like he has since 85. Dave at 75% is still damn good. Eddie at 75% is a train wreck.

I'm still there...The ACC isn't my favorite place for a show...but it's not like I'm going to miss it. This is true about any show in Montreal, Ottawa (unlikely, I know), Buffalo. I may even hit some shows in Philly, NJ, Boston, Conneticut, New Hampshire, etc. Anywhere within a 10 hour drive, depending on my vacation schedule. A little mini tour of my own.

I am expecting some aging rockers to do their best to be the Mighty Van Halen. Dave's voice is one of my worries, but those who have seen him live in the recent past say he's on. I hope so. I don't want anything about their shows to be half assed. ED WILL BE A LITTLE MORE SOBER, I HOPE. I hope wolfie gets to see a lot of breasts. Break that boy in girls. Whip them out for the young man.

I half expect to see Mikey out in the parking lot holding a sign saying, "WILL WORK FOR A TICKET."

I do not expect a CVH concert, so it will be disappointing right off the bat. There will be many elements that will be missing for me. I have seen CVH back in 82, whether this is even worth attending is still up in the air.
I don't believe it will be the high energy Van Halen concerts we have come to expect. Dave will probably not be doing the splits off of the drum risers. His one liners will not be a source of laughter as was before.
As far as Edward, your guess is as good as mine on whether he shows up to each and every show?
Sure, I may sound like a downer, but let's be realistic here. I hold VH very high on my choice of best concerts attended. However, their best days are behind them. No matter what Edward has said in the past, Van Halen has become a novelty act. I will probabley just watch 82 Largo, Bueos Aires, US Festival, Brazil 83 or Montreal 84. Christ, it sounds like a funeral not something to get excited about!

If they're not good its over and they know it. They won't get a free pass just for showing up from the CVH faithfull that have waited all these years just to get VH mk Ib. If anything by not delivering the original lineup they brought on more scrutiny. The silence is deafening coming from VH...maybe they're thinkin it over.

maybe they'll give al a mic? i mean, he can sing harmony and has done a lot of backing vocals on the records.

that would be tits.

Mickeba expects to see Dave work his ass off and really try to put out a great show, Ed it all depends on health and being sober, Alex is in the best shape or position of them all, Wolfgang is completely unknown, probably will be scared to death at first. In short I expect something very inconsistent at first, and if they get along, maybe this could work. If nothing else, it will be interesting, as will the HOF.
