    Astbury quits Riders

The Cult vocalist Ian Astbury has officially moved on from working with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of The Doors. The band, performing under the moniker Riders On The Strom, has toured the world extensively over the past four years, and had just completed a sold-out 13-date tour of Europe. Astbury, who is now fully engaged in re-launching The Cult alongside guitarist Billy Duffy, has decided it was time to close that chapter of his musical career.

"I have decided to move on and focus on my own music and legacy," Astbury said in a statement. "I have enjoyed performing and sharing the stage with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger immensely. I have learned a great deal from the both of them, and it certainly has expanded my abilities as a performer. This has been a difficult decision to make but I feel I would be holding them back as well as myself if I did not depart at this time. Great love and respect to all the fans. Thank you for everything you have shared with me...."

There is no word at press time on his possible replacement; however, Riders on the Storm manager Tom Vitorino stated that the band will continue to perform, and is currently considering a very short list of vocalists.

As previously reported, The Cult will make its first live appearance of 2007 on February 24 at California Speedway in Fontana, California. The concert, which begins at 8:00 p.m., is a part of NASCAR's highly successful Rock 'n Racing series. Tickets include admission to the racetrack to view the race and The Cult's post-race performance.

The Cult is scheduled to enter the studio this month to begin pre-production on the group's first album since 2001's "Beyond Good and Evil". A fall release is expected. Also planned for release is a DVD of the band's November 13, 2006 concert at Irving Plaza in New York City, tentatively due in April.

The Cult's current touring lineup includes principals Ian Astbury (vocals) and Billy Duffy (guitar) alongside bassist Chris Wyse, drummer John Tempesta (ex-White Zombie, Testament, Exodus, Helmet) and rhythm guitarist Mike Dimkich. New The Cult European tour dates are being booked for June, with many more shows to follow in the fall and winter.

Loss Of Fools saw Riders at the Camden Roundhouse, historical gig for the Doors and he said they were absolutely incredible.

Shame hes reforming the Cult though...

Saw them in Manchester. Posted a lil' review further down.

GRATE stuff. There aren't many shows you go to where every lyric is sung by everybody in attendance. And there aren't many people well into their 60s who can still play not too different than they did in 1971.

I regret not going, sounded like a cracker with a varied setlist, the usuals plus some more obscure stuff.

In fairness, I don't like the Cult but I think its good for Astbury to move on, hes been doing the Riders gig for a number of years and hes gotta concentrate on his stuff too.

I hope a suitable replacement is found.

It'll be difficult. Astbury was pefect. he was like Jim (in both looks and sound) without actually TRYING to be like Jim (you can always see right through that).

That was one of Loss Of Fools concerns before the gig, that Ian would try to hard to BE Jim but apparently he got it just right.

I always think in these situations no matter who's place your filling, you have to bring some of your own character otherwise its just cheap cabaret

The Cult were so groundbreaking, and "Beyond Good and Evil" was great, stripped down and raw which is in complete contrast to most of their earlier work.

I wonder who'll play drums on the new Cult record, seen that Matt Sorum has the Velvet Revolver gig...

I don`t know how any rock fan couldn`t like The Cult.

"Love", "Electric" and "Sonic Temple" are all flawless and none of their albums are less than good.

                              Unashamed heavy rock.

They`ve also got their own sound, when you hear them you know who it is.

I hope they release a new album, especially with the line up I saw in September (as above).

Astbury in The Doors was interesting, but very much a dead end.
