That was a great movie. I have a pic on my wall of Davy Jones and I. He's a really nice guy. Loves to talk.

He is a nice guy. Short too!

You're right about the talking part though.

Some idiot booked Jimi Hendrix to warm up for the Monkees. Jimi told the kids to fuck off and flipped them the bird when they booed him off stage because they wanted the Monkees and not some black Gypsie masturbating himself on his amplifiers.

Elephant Parts was a brilliant concept video.

Least Nesmith went onto do something with his talent.

Last Train To Clarksville was the first record I ever bought. a 45, no less. Still a great song.

Wasn't he a founder of the MTV brand? He'd have to be loaded. Well, RICH and loaded....without a sock hat!

Think someone in his immediate family invented Liquid Paper back in the day, so he didn't need to do jack shit after the Monkees folded. That's why he never really bothered with any Monkee reunion tours; because he didn't HAVE to. Everything he put out post-Monkees was stuff he did because he wanted to, and had the wherewithall to make his music exactly the way he wanted it (didn't have to bow to record company pressures, etc.)

Pretty cool guy. So was Tork.

The other two are kinda a pair of cumquats.

It was great thought...he talks about all the stuff that went on back then. Right down to describing how the photo on the cover of the first Monkees album was taken with an instamatic camera, and that's why it's a little out of focus. Nicest celeb I ever met.

No, I don't...

Just because someone (or some act) was good, does not make them ahead of their time...

That term is thrown around way too much...

And frankly, they weren't very good live...

I always thought "The Porpoise Song" was a pretty damn good psychedelic anthem for the times. Even though the lyrics are downright Hagar-esque.

And the Monkees Live 1967 might have been the first punk rock album ever made. Not that they intended to be punk, it just sounded that way because they couldn't play very well. Which is probably why they didn't actually release the record for 20 years.

Well, trust me the rest of the record is just as "good".

On the other hand, the last Monkees album "Justus" was actually pretty good......

Michael Nesmith was already loaded, since his mom made a boatload of money for inventing white-out.

I remember Frank Zappa was quoted as saying: "The Monkees were better than anything that came out of San Francisco."

Actually it was remark by Frank stating. "The Monkees' records were better-produced than 90% of what he heard coming out of San Francisco."

The Monkees may as well have influenced Rush also. Look at one of the guitars Nesmith plays. Same one Alex Lifeson used for "Hemispheres".

THE MONKEES were a really good band. People love to talk about how packaged they were. They sang everything. They played instruments by the third album. They played their own shows. They wrote certain songs too. They had their own personalities. And a great list of songs. PORPOISE SONG, ALL OF YOUR TOYS, LAST TRAIN TO CLARKSVILLE, I WANNA BE FREE, GOIN' HOME, and many many more.

Frank had a point there. The production on the first three Grateful Dead studio albums was horrible. And the Airplane were quite "muddy" as well.

I'd call almost any MONKEES record a better overall record than almost any JEFFERSON AIRPLANE record. Fucking hippie-babble. Gimme a melody any day.

And as far as a Monkees - CSN comparison goes, there is a connection... (sort of).

Stephen Stills auditioned for the band, but didn't make the final cut. I'm guessing they didn't want too many actual musicians in the group. Even with the two musicians (Nesmith and Tork) and the two actors (Jones and Dolenz) they ended up rebelling by the third album and insisted on playing their own instruments. Which, as I said earlier, they weren't really all that good at.

Yeah, but who do you want to roll around in the mud at Woodstock with? Grace Slick or Davy Jones?
