About 6 years ago I walked into a book store in Miami and I was strolling down the magazine isle and one caught my attention. Jeff Healey was on the cover and it had a pretty lengthy interview with him. I read it while a friend of mine went looking for some book. I hadn't heard anything about him in a long time and wondered why. Basically, he walked away from his record company after fullfilling his contract because they were trying to mold him into this 80's style guitar god and wanted him to start turning out power ballads and shit. He was so disgusted it soured him on the business. I don't remember the entire interview but a cool bit of info stuck with me. He got his first guitar at 1 and by 3 he was playing whole songs. That floored me. Now he just hangs out at his bar in Canada and plays jazz. He was pretty smart with his money so he ain't broke.

Now, we've all heard the Clapton clones, the SRV clones, and of course the EVH clones but have you ever heard another guitarist that tries to sound like Jeff Healey? I haven't! Maybe its because of the way he plays it across his lap or maybe its because its too damn hard. I don't know. He did say that he plays like that because no one had the heart to tell him hew was holding it wrong.

I love his cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". I think the guitar work is better than the original which was played by Eric Clapton on the record but that is just my two pennies.

SRV tops the list of people I wish I'd seen....
