(FORD and EAT MY ASSHOLE inspired this thread...though I'm sure there have been others.)

I love Dylan. The dude's a genius. And I don't just go to the lyrics as so many people do...I think the melodies and arrangements are great.

The thing is, Dylan isn't perfect. Even though his career is four times longer, it's still much spottier than the Beatles or Zeppelin or somebody.

But damn does he have so many high moments.

I think HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED is an obvious classic. It doesn't get much better than BALLAD OF A THIN MAN.

BLOOD ON THE TRACKS is an obvious classic. IDIOT WIND is a truly moving piece of music.

But funny enough, my favorite of all time is still STREET LEGAL. WHERE ARE YOU TONIGHT, IS YOUR LOVE IN VAIN and SENOR are completely under-appreciated Dylan classics.

That's actually not one of my favorites. But I do still love HURRICANE.

I love the mood on that album, great singing by Emmylou Harris.

Never got into Dylan really, though i tried.

Outside of a few classic songs, the music just passes me by with no effect.

Um no, with the effect my attention is not drawn to his lyrics.

Big fan of Shot of Love. Which is really a lame album in a lot of ways, but, what can I say, it does it for me...(especially "Every Grain of Sand")

Also, of his 80s stuff, "Silvio" is stellar.

Cool thread!

I am going to have to have a chat with a few of the mods about setting up a forum for old cunts like you.

Will get back to you soon.

I really gotta get into that album.

He was pretty consistent through a lot of the 70s, but the 80s are obviously considered barren territory for him. But I've actually read some good things about that album. I have a track from it in the box set, but that's it...

There are actually a couple of songs I enjoy on his usually-mediocre "reborn" albums, SLOW TRAIN COMING and SAVED...

That said, I do like this 1971 Dylan classic.

I actually like Saved a whole lot. Slow Train is good, but its got some real horrors on there too.

Which boxed set? Biograph? Or The Bootleg Series?

(Oh, speaking of the Bootleg Series and his 80s stuff, "Blind Willie McTell" and "Series of Dreams"...it baffles that these never made it onto "official" albums. INCREDIBLE.)

I don't have BOOTLEG SERIES VOL. 1-3 yet...it's near the top of my box set purchases to get to in the near future.

I have BIOGRAPH. Obviously, that has some rarities and a somewhat good (but eclectic) track selection. Really shitty mastering on it, though.

I like SAVED more. I am not a religious man, but THE GARDEN is a really cool and moving track.

I have heard BLIND WILLIE MCTELL and enjoy that quite a bit.

What's your take on PLANET WAVES? I've only heard it once and thought it relatively weak but need to give it another chance.

Planet Waves...that's sort of like the unloved step-child for me. I WANT to like ti...but can't. (New Morning is solid, from that era) And The Band backs him on there, so it should have been great. Ah well.

As for Biograph, that kicks off with a fucking KILLER version of "You Go Your Way, and I'll Go Mine" (with the Band backing him). That's...wow, just thinking about that track and performance gives me chills.

Bootleg is great. Some really great demos from Blood on the Tracks. On "If You See Her" you can actually hear Dylans cufflinks brushing up aginst the side of his guitar. A really great performance, to my mind it EDGES the BOTT version.

Wow...I can't imagine anything beating that version of IF YOU SEE HER, SAY HELLO on BOTT. It's amazing. Isn't there also an alternate IDIOT WIND in BOOTLEG? Again, I can't imagine anything better than the master...but I still want to hear it.

What's a nice change about bootleg is that it concentrates on completely unreleased tracks and not just alternates. THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY was a fascinating set...but it surely had none of the wonders to discover on things like Springsteen's TRACKS, which was virtually all unreleased (and finished) songs. But hey, singer-songwriters typically have more leftover material than pop artists do.

Oh, the unreleased tracks are INCREDIBLE. Some of Dylans very best. And it's a testament to what a FREAK the guy is that he second guesses himself so much that he winds up leaving a good deal of that stuff off his albums!!!

I didn't much care - to my great disappointment - for Springsteen's Tracks. Stuff like Loose Ends and I Wanna Be Where The Bands Are sounds like Bruce trying to do Bruce to me. The stuff that I always liked - especially Shut Out the Lights, one of my all-time fave Bruce songs, The Wish (really beautiful), and his adaptations of I Ain'T Got No Home and Vigilante Man - it was nice that it finally had an official home, but I already had it in one form or another.

Damn, I gotta get that set. I'm getting really excited to hear it now. Maybe in a couple of months.

I also have to say that THE BASEMENT TAPES (which is an archive release, even if it's 30 years old in terms of its release date) is also fantastic. Rough or not, overdubbed or not...it's amazing stuff. TEARS OF RAGE, THIS WHEEL'S ON FIRE, MILLION DOLLAR BASH, QUINN THE ESKIMO (the outtake on BIOGRAPH)...timeless songs with more of a swing to 'em.

I actually enjoyed TRACKS a lot. I made additional Bruce discs to add to my collection by compiling songs from certain periods into new albums. ZERO AND BLIND TERRY is really good. I enjoyed I WANNA BE WITH YOU (as fluffy as it is), LIVING ON THE EDGE OF THE WORLD (a lot of spirit in this one), ROULETTE (already a b-side, but a great song)...and you have to admit that the alternate STOLEN CAR is superior to the original...

I also enjoyed BACK IN YOUR ARMS AGAIN. I'm not as big on latter-day Bruce...but this was a good E-Street Reunion-era (1995) track that was in his home video of that period but not released until TRACKS.

Stolen Car - The River version - is one of the most scariest things I've ever heard. The production matches the lyrics really well - the desolation, hollowness, and even the almost inaudibility of the track (Whose lyrics are, after all, "IN this darkness/I will disappear").

have you heard the Seegar Sessions? The limited edition AMERICAN LAND version has two additional tracks that sre among the best stuff he's ever done: HOW CAN A POOR MAN STAND SUCH TIMES AND LIVE contain new lyrics by Bruce to reflect the Katrina tragedy, and a cover of BRING 'EM HOME, which is more moving and persuasive than a thousand FORDS put together. When Bruce is on like this, I would follow him off a cliff.

"Bring Em Home" fucking rocks! I was pissed that Bruce updated that album, because I only bought it like a week before then.

Did you catch the "Live in Dublin " video that PBS has been using to pimp "pledge drive month" Amazing performance by "The Boss" and the Sessions Band. I'm not sure if that DVD is available yet in the retail market, but if not, it should be soon.

As far as this Devil's concerned, Pete Seeger & Woody Guthrie to Dylan to Springsteen is all one lineage (no disrespect to Arlo Guthrie, Jakob Dylan, or any of Bruce's kids intended.)

Cheaper than a CD??

Unfuckingbelievable.

From what I hear he's really lost it.

Is that the case?

The Live In Dublin is a great performance. I was disappointed that it wasn't a performance in the U.S. - in that the immediacy of some of the themes of these songs is lost on an international audience - and "Bring 'Em Home - loses its context (hence, it's not on here) - but you really can't go wrong for 9.99 can you?

The best official live Bruce DVD by far.

I believe his last album got to number 1 in the USA.

I know he has done some tv presenting & is also featured on this LP.

I'm a big Dylan fan. His career certainly is a lot of ups and downs in terms of quality. I guess I like Blonde on Blonde best. But you have the other landmark Dylan albums like Bringing it all Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blood on the Tracks. He kind of fell into a weird area for a while, with country albums like John Wesley Harding & Nashville Skyline. Not bad albums but just so far from what Dylan had been. Dylan even changing to a weird singing voice on NS, with songs like Lay Lady Lay. Really the only albums that are pretty much hard to listen to are Self Portrait and the self titled, Dylan.

As far as later work, I always loved Empire Burlesque, and Infidels. He kind of hit a low mark again with Under the Red Sky. All the rest of the albums all seem to have some good stuff to offer.

Bootleg Series is a fantastic collection, as are all the live "Bootleg" vols. 2-6.

I've said it over and over...Dylan can craft one hell of a song but I'd rather hear ANYBODY else sing them beside that mushmouthed warbling wannabee crooner!

Great songwriter, but he can't sing worth a shit. His old backup band does a better job of that. And if you can't figure out the name of his backup band, then stick your head in a bucket of pirahna fish:
