Some true "ICONS" never outlive their legacy but there is no better definition or explanation for the term "Legends." They truly are.

I had the luck of catching a doc on them a few years back. I missed the first few mins so I don't recall the title but it seems that President Kennedy owes them an enourmous debt of gratitude for helping him get elected. There were other members sporadically before and after they officially became "The Rat Pack." At one point Bogey and Bacall were early members and later on Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh were also. There was a segment about Dean Martin's tv show and they verified the rumor that he NEVER rehearsed a damn thing and really did not know who would come out that door. He ad libbed everything and IMHO there has never been anyone as good doing it. I'd say Carol Burnett and Robin Williams are amazing but Dean was always special.

I also caught a talk show back in the early 90's that was dedicated to the remaining "Rat Pack" family members and a lady in the audience asked if they really were as close as they seemed. One of the family members spoke about how Sammy lost his eye and they were by his side as soon as they found out and they even refused to play a gig at a place that wouldn't let him come through the front door or into one of the dressing rooms because he was black. They stood by him like a friend does.

But I think Frank's daughter put any doubt to rest when she replied, "My father has a picture of him holding Sammy off the ground and the caption says He ain't heavy. He's my brother."

Thanks for posting this.To me Dean Martin was the coolest mother fucker going.i thought ni read somewhere that dean used to deal blackjack sometimes after shows and let the people win with the house money.

Every generation has its epitome of cool. Now generally, the next generation will dismiss
the last generation's heroes, but fucking NOBODY can deny, that the Rat Pack were some of the coolest mofos in history, led by perhaps THE coolest (Sinatra).

Sinatra is my hero. I have just about every bio about him. I even have that of his former valet, George Jacobs.

The thing is, while he was the epitome of cool on the outside, he was a tortured soul on the inside for a large portion of his adult life.

The Pack is the coolest, though. I have a bootleg of a show of their from Chicago in '75, I think it is, and it is fantastic. One of my favorite boots around. (Actually, it's just Frank and Dean, but it's still the coolest. I wouldn't mind finding one of the whole Pack and listen to their routine, though.)

Yeah when Sammy first came to Vegas, it was due to Frank helping him out.

And the casino (The Sands?) DID refuse to let Sammy come in the main entrance, and when Frank found out about it he went BALLISTIC!

Christ I would not have wanted Frank mad at me! :eek:

So he told the management that if they did not treat Sammy like any other human being, he would never play at their place again!

They caved in.

Frank was the man who instigated desegregation in the casinos of Vegas.

Frank RULED!!!
